Average wings, refried beans from a tin and rice that’s re-heated in the microwave. Add a bad margarita and it’s not the recipe for a return visit. Even the service was below average with the male server particularly disinterested and stinking of cigarette smoke.

It’s now called Frida’s Cantina or something, with cliché odes to Frida Kahlo. The food is ok, not«authentic Mexican,» but we’re geographically inept here in Vancouver to take that task on seriously. Staff are fine, pretty douchey customers when I was there, making stupid, crude, frat boy drug conversation, and I think he knew the owners, so there’s that.

The food here is terrible. It tasted like it was taken right out of the freezer and the rice was stuck together from scrapping it off the bottom of the pot. Their fries were even worse than their rice. HOWDOYOUSCREWUPFRENCHFRIES!!! The service wasn’t great either. I highly recommend NEVER eating here.

Bad service… We sat down and waited for several minutes. We made eye contact with the bartender but still nothing. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else. Hopefully they get the service fixed soon, as it looks like the new owners(formerly The Shack) are trying to come up with a cool concept.

I’ve been to the Shack once or twice in the past. Boring, sports bar, the same usual thing. The atmosphere is better and so is the food. I ordered a cheese burger and fries. Had it on my table in no time, very well cooked and lots of fries. I will be back and will be bringing others :-)

If you do find yourself in this shack be sure to check your change closely. Last night the bartender with the patchy scruff and long wavy hair tucked back under a toque«accidentally» short changed me $ 10. $ 20 — $ 4.75 does not equal $ 5.25 you CROOK I may have accepted it as a mistake if it wasn’t for the smug look on his face after i called him out on it. $ 1 taco Tuesdays huh? How bad could they be? Well, imagine Mc Donald’s made tacos, really average tacos.

I went in for the first time and wanted to like this place as it has potential written all over. However, after having one beer, I left disappointed that what could have been a nice neighbourhood watering hole turned into a mirage. The beer and liquor selection for a bar in an area like Kits was a big letdown. They don’t even have Guinness and their whiskey selection was a joke. the young girl who served me looked about as interested in being there as if she had been having elective surgery. All in all a big disappointment.

A fun place to catch the game with your buddies, or to sit on the patio during a hot summer evening. Casual, easy going, not a place you’d have a date at sort of experience.

It appears the general consensus on the Shack is either you love it or you don’t. I’ve been here twice, once for a birthday and another time just for a casual pint. Unfortunately, like others have said, I wanted to enjoy the Shack, but it just isn’t a place that has left me wanting to come back. The best features of the Shack are the location(nestled nicely in the middle of kits) and the decent amount of space they have on a patio that is on both sides of the restaurant. That’s about where the good points really stop. Both times I’ve gone, the service has been scarce. With that said, the server has been run off her feet… that’s right singular, as in only one waitress for the entire pub. The Shack is not a huge place, but it is very understandable that one person would have trouble if the place was only half filled. There has been a bartender on, but they seemed to be busy pouring drinks furiously, or running to the kitchen or back. As Mike G mentioned, they had several interesting bottles of beer on display behind the bar. However, they were just for show or didn’t have many of them in stock at the time(on BOTH occasions that I went a few weeks apart). To add to this, even though both the severs I’ve had were nice, they couldn’t tell me the beers they had on tap or in bottles, and said it may be best for me to go to the bar and have a look. It’s not a big place, so I have no problem doing this, but a server really should know what beers they normally server. Maybe they didn’t want to keep track since, as mentioned, they seemed to be low on beer types both times I’ve gone and probably genuinely didn’t know what they had in stock that day. From the photos on Unilocal,it appears that the Shack will be doing renovations to the washrooms soon, which is severely needed as they were pretty dingy and worn. On the note of the birthday I attended, even though it was way overcrowded, and service was slow, the server was cheerful(even though you could see she was overwhelmed). Also, the Shack let us drop off an ice cream cake in the afternoon to store for the party later in the evening. I thought this was very cool and earned the Shack one more star. I will perhaps try the Shack again at a time that it doesn’t look very busy or has more than one server on. But, for now, it’s not a place I would go out of my way to return to, especially with so many other watering holes in kits just steps away.

I have been here twice… both times it was below average… started with a server that was 2⁄10 but ended with one that was 9/10…too bad it didn’t start that way… The Shack is in a fairly good location but it needs to step up the service to be a place were you want to go back… hoping the best for them

I went to the shack for a birthday party recently on a Saturday Night and I really wanted to like the place. The problems started right away when there was only one server and one bartender for a busy night with basketball playoffs and other sporting events as well as a big birthday party(the party was reserved for too so they knew the numbers). The service was abysmal(at no fault to the server as she was left stranded) all night. Trying to get a drink or food was like pulling teeth. They displayed all kinds of interesting and exciting beer at the bar but had almost none of them in stock. Why even show the bloody stuff if you do not carry it? All in all it was a brutal night and I will not be a patron here again as they obviously do not know how to run a pub/restaurant. It really is too bad to because the server seemed super nice and apologized immensely for being slow.

My boyfriend and I went into this place last weekend for(what we were hoping to be) a quick lunch before we headed up to check out UBC(we’re not from the city). There were 2 people working the entire restaurant on a sunny, sunday afternoon — the cook, and one overwhelmed, seemingly inexperienced server. We sat down, ordered some drinks/food, and the waiting began… about 30 minutes later… as we sipped on our water(might I add that after wondering why mine tasted a little weird, i realized there was a piece of garlic in the bottom of the glass) we wondered what the hell was taking our food so long. then we began to notice the others being served, returning their food, getting a new dish, returning that, switching plates amongst tables, and also overheard the ‘cook’ telling the server that he ran out of lettuce and tomatoes! it was then that we realized it would probably be a while before we were served. My boyfriend(who is the nicest person and avoids confrontation at all costs) went up to the bar to ask the bar tender if he could give us a time estimate on our food. i can’t blame the guy for being stressed considering he was the only one working, however, he didn’t even apologize for the wait. just said«it’ll be ready in 2SECONDS!» …15 minutes later is when i lost my cool after seeing a table of 2 that arrived AFTER us receive their food before us. My boyfriend paid for his beer(6.50 for a bottle of Keiths), we left, and we will never return. I get it, you’re in the midst of a changeover, but get your shit together or stay closed until the«changeover» is complete!

Went there yesterday after a volleyball game. Monday 10 $ burger and beer, can’t go wrong with that. Awesome thing was the waiter allowed us to get pitchers instead of separate beers… don’t know if that made a difference. Now that I think about it, it wouldn’t make a difference. Burger was pretty good, a lot of bun and I had the fries. It didn’t look like a lot of fries because it was spread out under the burger but I wasn’t able to eat it all so it was decent. We also had the nachos with pulled pork(I’m not a fan but someone else ordered it). Again, the plate of nachos didn’t seem that big but it was shared among 5 people, and everyone seemed happy. Great place for people watching… although they do not give peanuts to throw at them which would be nice.

A good addition to kitsilano. Its a small bar and is usually packed by australians who know how to party. They have good service and a good beer menu. They’re open till 2am which is also a big plus. In the summer you can sit on their patio which is good for people watching

Most memorable part of this bar? Their beer menu. Ask for it, you’ll want to take a photo of it. It’s a wooden board with all the bottle caps of the beers they serve. Bloody brilliant. Typical gastropub fare, cool, young crowd. Oh I forgot, there’s a tree that grows through the roof of their patio.

Definitely my worst bar experience in Vancouver so far. If I could give this place a negative rating, I would. After arriving as a larger group on Friday evening, we were rudely pushed around by the servers, and continually told to sit down at a table. However, at 12:30 on a Friday night, not only were they serving drinks directly from the bar, they were charging a pretty penny for them. None of our interactions were friendly, and especially considering the quantity of drinks bought, I think they could have been a bit more courteous. For a later night trip to the bar, any of the other places along broadway will suit you much better.

I’m a big fan of pubs. Having that said, I walked into the Shack on a Monday afternoon because I was drawn in on their Monday’s special sign: «Beer and Burger for $ 10»…isn’t that enough to draw in anyone? Even though I had already decided to do the $ 10 Beer and Burger deal, I decided to peruse their menu and see what else there is. Menu isn’t big, mostly burgers, sandwiches… the basic pub food. As my eyes skimmed down the appetizer picks, I found YAMFRIES(A good size serving for $ 8). The $ 10 deal I ordered included fries, so I quickly asked if I could substitute my fries for yam fries(extra $ 2). Service was quick, I got my beer(I believe it was around a pint, or less) and there was a generous serving of yam fries sitting next to my burger. One thing I slightly disliked was the bun they used for the burger, it’s not your regular burger bun… not sure what kind of bread it is. But the yam fries… YES! I absolutely love their yam fries! I would definitely go back to the Shack whenever I crave for yam fries… not to mention, go back and try one of their other weekly specials. The yam fries were just thick and firm enough to hold a decent amount of yam meat, but not so fat that you would mistake it for Japanese yam tempura. Not too much batter, and was fresh! For yam fries, this is the best, cheapest, most economical in Vancouver I’ve eaten so far!

I absolutely LOVE the Shack! The coppertank is on the same block as the Shack, but the coppertank’s last call is at 12:30 and they close at 1!!! The Shack is open till 2 am! WOOT The Shack has pretty good food, great drink specials every night of the week, and is a great place to socialize! Everyone that works there is super friendly and nice! They also have a patio, which is a GREAT for those hot summer days, when you want to sit and relax with a nice cold beer or spritizer… or $ 17~ pitcher of Sangria! !! The Shack is owned by the same people that own Lola’s Bar further down Broadway, meaning they all know how to have a great time!

1. The Shack The most unlikely pick up place for a single gal — oh and they serve burgers too. Picture the Roxy sans the 90s classic rock soundtrack and overly made-up pre-Madonna’s. UBC rugby players, hockey lovers, and the general down-to-Earth Kits crowd congregates to this posh dive bar to watch sports, eat Kobe beef burgers and drink draft beer. The prices are reasonable and the staff is as friendly as the patrons. Plus it’s one of the only places that serves mango flavoured vodka(with soda it’s to die for)! However, be warned: there is no such thing as going to the Shack for«one drink.» Location 3189 W Broadway Street Price $$
