For our students, we offer simply the best, most modern and efficient way to become a hairdresser in Canada. We will teach you more in the first 3 days than most schools teach you in the first 3 months.

For our clients, we provide salon quality hair cutting, colouring and styling services for outstanding value.

Historique

Fondé en 2010.

The Vancouver Hairdressing Academy was conceived of by beauty industry leader Michael Levine, founder and director of Statik Salon, Space Salon, Caramel Salon and Tao Salon.

Since 1998, Michael Levine has been training new hairdressing talent in one of the best apprenticeship programs ever offered, filling all of his salons only with graduates of his training. This system has consistently developing some of the best hairstylists working in Vancouver today.

Frustrated with the skill-level and how ill-prepared virtually all the applicants coming into the salons from Vancouver hairdressing schools were, Michael knew he and his team could do better, and in a shorter period of time than other hairdressing schools.

This is a new kind of hairdressing school, focused on developing young talent that can thrive in any salon, in any city.

Michael Levine is one of Canada’s most sought after and in-demand stylists.

Opening Statik in 1998, Caramel in 2003, Tao in 2007 and Space in 2011 with his wife and celebrated hairdresser Liz Abreu, Michael has been behind the chair making Vancouver women’s hair more beautiful since 1994, as well as developing young talent through apprenticeships and now at Vancouver’s premier hairdressing school the Vancouver Hairdressing Academy.

In developing his philosophy on hair, Michael has alway tried to find the most direct way to the look he is after, often starting at the focal point and then working the rest of the hair around that key area.

With a strong vision for pretty hair, even when doing edgier looks or editorial projects, Michael has worked on many of Canada’s most recognizable faces, as well as having been featured on countless Global News broadcasts and appearances on «Crash Test Mommy» and «Anna and Kristina’s Beauty Call.»

I’m only giving 2 stars right now because I’m a little frustrated. I have been to this salon two or three times before, with great results. I’ve had 2 different student stylists do my hair in the past, and I left happy both times. I have done bleaching, highlights and lowlights, and now I wanted to just do a root touch up/bleach.
I made an appointment but unfortunately had to cancel. Things come up and sometimes you have to reschedule things, life happens. But when I called in to reschedule, I was surprised to get a snotty attitude on the other end of the phone and was told that I wouldn’t be able to get another appointment, «Probably until after Christmas. Especially for a bleach out.» This was last week. Then I was put on hold so she could double check. I waited for about five minutes and then hung up feeling like I had been treated poorly.
Like I said, I have been here before and was treated well, especially by the teacher who was supervising my student stylists (I’m sorry I am horrible with names), who would check on me and make sure the service was being done right. The owner even came down and shook my hand, talked to me for a few minutes, even showed the student who was cutting my hair how to cut «backwards», lol.
This is why I was so surprised to get the lackadaisical attitude and then get put on hold for what seemed like forever (I’m sure it was probably about 5 minutes, but I got fed up and hung up) to «check on that».
I don’t know what’s happening with this place but if that is how things are done now, I won’t be going back. Which is too bad, because I was super happy with them before.
PS — The reason it took me a week to write this review is this — I wasn’t planning on it until, stupid me, tried to bleach my own roots last night out of frustration, and of course, now I need to have it fixed by a professional. I guess I’m looking for a new hair school. One that won’t make me wait for weeks to get an appointment, or have students answer the phone that are going to be rude to customers. Makes me wonder how they’re going to treat people when they leave school and gain employment.

I used to come here for my haircuts but I won’t come back due to my latest experience. I waited 3 weeks for my appointment to have my haircut, which is expected because it is a really good deal.
On the day of the appointment, I walked in. The lady in charge told me my hair stylist called in sick. And that she claimed that she tried to call me in the morning and left me a message, but there was no such thing. I have no voicemail from her and no missed calls. I thought she would try to make it right for me since I was already there. But no, she asked me to make another appointment, which meant another 3 weeks of waiting.
No thanks. I won’t come back after this. It took me an hour to drive there. Had she ACTUALLY called me, I would have been ok with this.

I’ve been four times now, three times with Lenny (who has just graduated), and once with Kyla (newbie). Each time for highlights. They’re very nice here, and aim to please. Just one thing, they often forget to update your file with the formula and notes so you might need to remind them, if you are keen to have your colour duplicated. I’ve come away with a different colour each time. For the price, I don’t think you can really go too wrong!

I’m writing this review because I’m still a little upset over what happened. I called in to make an appointment on March 25^th and managed to snag a spot on April 8 (today) at 1PM. So that was basically a 2 week wait to get a hair cut, which I was happy to do because of the low price and all the great reviews I’ve read.
Yesterday, they called me to confirm my hair appointment, but this morning at around 9:40AM, I get a call from VHA telling me that my hair stylist called in sick and I wouldn’t be able to get my haircut from them. I was pretty okay with that as I was expecting them to offer me a replacement hair stylist for today or perhaps tomorrow. But instead, the receptionist tells me that the next available date would be April 27, which is pretty much 3 weeks from now. WHAT?! I feel like that’s incredibly terrible customer service. Through no fault of my own, they would have me wait 3 more weeks just to get a hair cut? Honestly, I just told them to cancel my appointment as I couldn’t wait that long.
I had planned my day around this hair appointment since it says on the website and in other reviews to give the student some time to do my hair, and now I have to rearrange my schedule again. It’s not a big deal, but it still sucks as I really needed a haircut.
I’m not sure if I’ll plan on having my hair done by VHA again. I know they’re busy, but if you cancel on me, at least offer me a better solution than having to wait 3 weeks.

I highly recommend getting colour done here. The price is so cheap and the quality of the work is excellent. I’ve had my ombré done here twice and it looks even better than my salon! The student stylist has to consult and check in with their instructor throughout the process so there’s never an «uh-oh» moment that you might imagine with a hair academy. Be prepared for the whole visit to take longer. My ombré and hair cut takes 5 hours but you walk out beautiful and pay very little for the hard work put in.

I decided to try this place out after reading the mostly positive reviews online. I needed a quick trim (long layers), nothing out of the ordinary and thought this would be a good budget friendly option instead of spending a ton at a regular salon.
Pro’s: the staff are friendly and fairly professional. The student I got was great at giving a wash (Shampoo/scalp massage etc). Great head massage. It’s dirt cheap $ 17 for a cut, wash, blow dry curl. The student didn’t hesitate to stop and ask the teacher for feedback/instructions.
Con’s: the cut was not good. The layers were choppy and uneven, the curl job also not great. I came here fully knowing that it would be students cutting my hair but I thought it would be a lot better than it was, after reading the reviews online. The instructor seemed more concerned about ‘teaching’ the student than making sure that the client got exactly the style they wanted. I ended up having to go back to another hair dresser to fix my hair.
Go at your own risk. I think it’s really a hit or miss, depending on which student you get and which instructor is working on hand.

I had an appointment at VHA yesterday. Just like a lot of people below me, I went to this hair salon based on the highly positive and raving reviews. All I can say is that, this place has lived up to its standards. The service is very professional and yet very personable.
DO KEEP IN MIND that this is a school and that your hairstylist is a student. Megan (sp?), my stylist yesterday was amazing. She made me feel comfortable and did my hair like as if it was being done by a girlfriend of mine. The teacher, Tina, also was amazing. I originally just wanted a trim because my hair was thirsty for one. But I was immediately convinced by them to get fringes since I brought up the idea. The haircut turned out amazing and the styling that was done was also great! HOWEVER, it was raining yesterday! So my hair got rained on, womp womp!
For $ 20 + $ 5 tip, which includes the cut, hair consultation, scalp massage thingy, and wash/blowdry, this was a bargain.
Be prepared to sit in the salon for almost two hours as I did. I knew what I was getting into so I did not mind. Plus the price and level of service made it well worth it.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I was told that there are some bitches that come into this place acting like über-catty DIVAS. Calm the fuck down. You’re paying for $ 20 for a haircut done professionally. I suggest you take your stanky ass somewhere else if you’re gonna act like a diva and go and pay $ 50 – 100 for a haircut. Just do not be rude, it’s not a fun time especially for the student.

This salon is kind of hit and miss, depending of which student you get. Sometimes you are lucky; other times, not so much.
I had a number of cuts here before I gave up and started paying big money. I have short curly hair in an asymmetrical cut, and it has to be done right.
Most of the time, I was happy — and the price is VERY good.

I don’t like paying ridiculous prices for haircuts, but I also hate bad haircuts. I’d always thought that if it was cheap it would be bad, but VHA proved that wrong.
I have fine, curly hair which can be a challenge to cut right and I am very happy with my haircut!
As other reviewers have said, you need to be prepared for the haircut to take a long time. Each step of the haircut needs to be run through with someone else because it’s learning environment– if you’re expecting that and you’re patient it is a great place to go for a nice haircut on a budget!

I needed a trim, and Bella did a lovely job, btw she will be here until August 8. For only 16CAD I got a hair cut and a blow dry, which I usually pay way more to get the same service.

I had an excellent experience here.
The stylists are very careful and ask will often ask you if you like how it looks, etc.
Before continuing on to any step they’ll let their teachers know.
A cut, scalp massage and blow dry + straighten were $ 17! I definitely recommend going here, everyone’s also very friendly and there’s a nice atmosphere.
If you ever do go here just be aware that it may take a little bit longer than other hair appointments you’ve had.
Scalp massage was really really nice.

I come to VHA for my root touch ups and highlights only. So far, they’ve done a great job! Yes, you need to take 2 – 3 hours to have it done but the students are always courteous, ask the questions (sometimes I volunteer info from past visits) and the teacher is always around and on hand to answer any questions.
The added bonus is… if I part on the street and it’s past the 2 hours allowed if I pay by phone, they’ll run out there and fill up the meter for you and add it to your bill! Gotta love that!

Keep in mind, this is a SCHOOL! If you are the impatient type or in a hurry, plan to be here at least 2 hours.
I booked an appointment based on the reviews on Unilocal!Luckily, I got in as there was a cancellation.
I am trying to grow out my hair so I just wanted a trim and layer to add body to my flat Asian hair. I was also apprehensive about getting my bangs trimmed as I did not want it to look like a ‘Bowl’ bang. I wanted bangs like Zooey Deschanel’s.
My student stylist, Melanie, was very friendly and took the time to understand my concerns. She took her time to trim, layer, and blow dry my hair. Every step, she checked with Ryan (the instructor) before proceeding.
When it was time to cut the bangs, Ryan stepped in and did a ‘Bang’ Up job.
The students don’t get paid so if you are happy with them, tip generously.

Why didn’t I know about hair schools before now??? If you are on a budget and want quality results, I highly recommend Vancouver hair academy. Oh and be sure to have the afternoon free.
I called for a desperately needed cut and highlights over spring break and was disappointed to hear the soonest appointment was a month away. They put me on the cancelation list. I was super excited when they called me the next morning for an appointment for the next day.
The stylist in training was very friendly and was careful to understand exactly what I wanted. I was thoroughly impressed that she was required to check in with her teacher before moving to each next step. Although, this meant I sat in the chair for 5.5 hours (the only reason for 4 stars).
The teacher made a point of being clear and modelling her process for the student to learn and ensure I left happy… I really did leave happy and OMG I paid basically NOTHING in comparison to what I usually pay. I will definitely go back but schedule cut and highlights on different days.
To sum up… You need time, patients, book long in advance, a lot of change (parking), and be ok with not having a regular stylist.

I’ve been here a couple times now and I’ve been very satisfied each time. The students are focused and nice. Their instructors are attentive and helpful to make sure you leave happy.
For the price it’s fantastic, but you do need to come with some patience and trust as well as an understanding that these folks are all still learning. All that being said, I definitely recommend it and it’s my go-to place.

Came here twice and both times I came out very happy. I came both times for wash and blow dry since it was cheap ($ 12!) and they use Bumble and bumble. I don’t come here as often as I would like because of the hours (opens at 11 and closes at 5 which clashes my work schedule usually) and the location (I don’t go to South Granville except for the rare occasion).
I got really last time and managed to get off work early and get my hair done since I had to go somewhere and my hair was oily and greasy and I kept feeling icky because of it. I called in the morning to see if I could book an appointment on the same day and whoo hoo! Grabbed an appointment in the afternoon and I was good to go.
The student I got did a really thorough wash since I had really greasy hair and did a great job with conditioning. For bonus points, she gave a nice scalp massage and it really made me relax after a (short) day at work.
I was definitely pleased with the blow dry result. My hair was nice and actually look well-kept!
I definitely recommend this place if you want a wash and blow dry without paying big bucks for it! The only downside is that the hours aren’t the best and it can be out of the way for people who don’t live or work in that area.

VHA is definitely better than I expected it to be!
From what my stylist told me, VHA’s program is only 6 months long and they let students start cutting at the salon after 2 – 3 months.
My stylist in training was very nice and at only 3 months, very scared of making mistakes, which I believe helps with the precision of the cut. He cut a bit and asked his supervisor to check his work and then double checked. I didn’t come in for any technical cuts~ just a trim and some short layers around my crown.
$ 15 does include a shampoo and blow dry~ the wash wasn’t very good because he was too gentle so it didn’t feel like the usual scalp massages you get at regular salons. But the cut itself was very good and he was very thorough with blow drying my hair to my specifications. The entire session took about 2 hours, longer than the average hair cut (but the time allowance is clearly stated on the website).
I would definitely come back– the service and the cut was well worth $ 15!

It really depends on who you get. One of the clients was stuck with someone who was sick so she was coughing and sneezing throughout the appointment.
I got a lady who was patient but didn’t seem to know what she was doing. When she was colouring, she was stabbing my my head so hard that it hurt. I had to ask her to gently dab the brush at the roots and not my scalp.
The cut, I have to admit was pretty bad. But only because I had asked for a trim and not too many layers. She trimmed it straight across and granted, at this point in her training, she probably lacked the experience or the confidence to do sometime creative or give suggestions contrary to what I asked for.
I had to get it professionally cut 2 weeks later.
I still go in for colour and I’ll just time my cuts when the students have more training.

This place is fantastic.
I just needed a trim, no more than an inch and was reluctant to pay $ 80 just for that.
This place is in a really convenient location, is really nicely decorated and the staff are professional but friendly.
I paid $ 14 for a great haircut, wash and style.
Such a good deal, will for sure be coming back.

I got my hair cut here, and it came out perfectly! It took an hour and a half from start to finish (including checking in, filling out paperwork, consultation, shampoo/condition, cut, blow dry and flat iron styling) and cost $ 18 ($ 14 + tax and tip, which I’m still not sure is expected but I did anyway because I was happy) and I really don’t think you can beat that!
The environment was relaxed, but definitely professional. It is a school, so be prepared for your hairstylist to ask questions that might be somewhat unnerving considering they’re holding a pair of scissors in one hand and your hair in the other… But even though my stylist seemed really insecure about what she was doing, she obviously knew her stuff because my hair came out really gorgeous; slight trim, subtle long layers, and blending my no-longer-bangs into the rest of my hair, aka EXACTLY what I asked for.
A lot of times I feel that stylists think they know better than you, or try to get fancy when you aren’t really into that, so if you’re a control freak about your hair (like I am) this is actually the perfect place for a cut. The stylists are new and not opinionated about what you *should* want. Furthermore, at least one other person is checking their work. I really think the likelihood of things going really wrong are slim to none in this kind of environment.
Great experience, over all. This is officially where I’m getting my hair trimmed from now on.
