Windsor Quality Meats

My family and I have been shopping at Windsor Meats for over 30 years. They are by far my favourite butcher. The prices are fair, and the quality is excellent. The service is very friendly and quick. They always try to get you exactly what you want.

Pretty decent meats, got myself some nice brisket and chicken breasts. Though they ran out of beef marrow bones, which is pretty odd for a butchers :)

They ground up my bulk supply of tougher grass fed cuts for 10 bucks, and 5 to wrap it into packs. The service took 25 minutes in total. I’ll order more ground from my supplier next time, yet they saved my meat from being too tough to eat this time.

I decided to check this place out based on the reviews. I kept an open mind when I arrived. I noticed a help wanted sign in the window. When I went inside, my first impression was that it was very grungy. I saw two young teenage boys chatting behind the counter. They didn’t seem interested in acknowledging the fact that I was there. I saw a tall disheveled man appear with what looked like a garden hose. He proceeded to hose down something I couldn’t quite see. When a customer entered to buy some chicken, I watched the young employee throw the meat into what looked like a small garbage bag then proceeded to yell out a price that seemed to come out of thin air. The meat overall looked very unsanitary. I’m use to Safeway meat department standards. The prices weren’t cheap. Strip loins were $ 22 per steak. Call me crazy but for those kind of prices, I expect a cleaner, more professional environment.

In the immediate area where Windsor Meats is located, there’s not another great selection for meats in grocery stores within walking distance, so it’s a life saver. I get almost everything routinely — steaks, sausage, ground meats. It’s great to have access to quality meats.

My Mom is coming over to cook the turkey this year. And I was told in no uncertain terms that, «You got to get a good one with some meat on it!», so I’m off to Windsor where I know it will be local, free run, antibiotic free and well priced.

Came in here for the first time last Sunday to pick up some pork «butt» (shoulder) for a batch of pork stroganoff.
The young guy behind the counter was friendly and advised us how much we would need for our purposes. The cut was gorgeous and turned out quite tender. With $ 18 worth of meat, we were able to serve 8 large plates! I would gladly go there over the standard grocery store butcher for quality as well as price.
There was a lot more in there I’d like to try out.

We’ve started making a weekly trip here from downtown because it is Just. That. Good.
The quality of the meat we’ve bought has been top-​notch. Prices are much cheaper than Whole Foods (where we do the majority of our shopping), and the taste is SO much better because these guys don’t trim all the fat off their meats.
They have an excellent selection of prepared meats, sausages and the like, and we have been getting the most delicious eggs as well.
Service is exceptionally friendly and helpful, right down to them holding open doors and helping me load bags into the car.
I wish they would open a downtown location…

Increasing my previous review because there is a WIDE variety here both in products AND price. I tend to buy my local beef/​meat in shares so I don’t come here too often but I have been here several times over the past year and have never been disappointed. I also get bones for broth here really cheap.

This place has become my ‘go-​to’ for sausages, after two BBQ’s eating their meat in a tube I can say that they have some of the best sausages. If you get here early enough you will see a variety of tubed meat… but if you get here later… well tough luck if there is no selection, there is a reason why! The first time I was here, I came around lunch, and this place had more than 6 varieties of sausage, anywhere from lamb, beef, chorizo, pesto chicken, spicy italian, turkey, and even beets and chicken, just to name the ones that I have seen here… haven’t tried them all yet. but in due time, it’s still Summer. and even if it passes I would still think of this place for meat.
Came here on a Saturday near close to pick up some sausages for my significant’s family BBQ at night. this place was packed with a lineup 8 deep. and other people roaming around seeing what is left to buy, it seemed like a zombie apocalypse with people loading up for home… or it could just be summer where people are loading up for the nightly BBQ or dinner. It was like a zoo in here, with some people giving up on the chase for meat due to the long lineup, and at the same time there were 3 people servicing clients.
The prices here are fair, and for sausages… very fair… as my dear took me to another place once to buy some links and spent more for less! I have yet to try their cuts of meat, but that is for another day! From prepared, ready to throw on the grill meats. to game meats. they even have a poultry section that is seperate and you can rent their grill! They also have a meat draw if you sign up online to their newsletter and the people are friendly here… until next time… eat meat, repeat!

I freaking love this place!
I have many food allergies and sensitivities and have to source meat from animals that aren’t pumped full of hormones and crappy «feed» but also a place that won’t leave my wallet lying face down in a gutter. Windsor Quality Meats is that place!
Very helpful and fun staff. Even when they are really crowded, they don’t treat people with impatience or rudeness. They help whenever and however they can.

There is a reason why this place has a long line up… it’s ’cause the cuts are good, decently price, caring staff. What more can you want from a butcher?

Very pleased with this butcher shop and the quality of their meats and service. They make great efforts to source their beef, chicken, turkey, lamb and pork locally, and are super keen to provide just whatever you like.
They often have organic, grass fed beef in season, and organic feed, non-​medicated free range chickens too.

OK so I had my second creepy experience here. The kid behind the counter was bare-​hand-​handling meat, my credit card and machine, then digging through the tip jar?!? then the next persons steak. WTF? Uh wash your hands bro.
The steaks looks less than fresh too. I’m looking for a new butcher. hmmmm.

I love this place, I buy all my meat here. I try my best to buy good quality meat, and I’m always pleasantly surprised how affordable this place is — comparing it to Granville Island butchers, Whole Foods, etc where I would buy similar quality meat.
Watch out for their house-​cured bacon, it is the meatiest, tastiest thing ever. They don’t always have it available.
The staff are friendly, normal people — none of that macho crap I seem to run into at so many butchers. I like that there isn’t heaps and heaps of meat and that they sometimes run out of things — that’s the way it should be, it means it’s not been hanging around for ages. If you need something specific, phone ahead and they will have it ready for you. There are new signs above the counters explaining the origin of each of their meats, and it’s really helpful.

I like this place. Other than the butcher shops at granville island, this is my go to butcher in Vancouver.
There’s often a lineup especially on weekends/​holidays and it can be a bit slow. but i guess that is a sign of quality.

My go to meat shop in Vancouver. They have the best balance of quality and value.
I love love love their rid eye steaks and I’m on the way out the door to get a couple for the BBQ tonight.
A few years ago I even ordered a 17lb Turducken and it was juicy and tasty.
Also I pre-​order chicken backs from them in the winter for making chicken soup stock.
Only complaint is that they sometimes charge me for a dog bone and when they do its not a cheap treat for the pooch.

I went here based on Unilocal’s review and was particularly looking if they were wearing gloves.
No, they didn’t. Which makes me uncomfortable to buy hams or item that need not to be cook. I ended buying double smoked bacon (I know I will cook thoroughly and gourmet dog food). The double smoked bacon smell fantastic and my dog loves the gourmet food. He is very sensitive to food, so I mixed in with his kibble.
I am giving this a four stars because of the following reasons:
1) Though they didn’t used gloves — and they touch meat to cash register, I am going assume they washed their hands first before starting the shift or else they would be complaints of stomach pain by now. It’s fine as long you bought meat that you will cook thoroughly.
2) Transparency — I can see what they are doing which is more than what is at the grocery stores.
3) Product are homemade and mostly locally sourced. My BIGGEST concerns with meat these days are from inhumane treatment of animals, processing the meat with nitrates (controversial), eating feed corn animals (which is why E-​coli is never going away). It all adds up to the American obesity problem. Zombie fat that will never goes away unless drastic measure.
Other than the lack of gloves, I found the customer service was not very inform about the product (I think he is a newbie). I want him selling the product — like telling where they came from. How they process in house. Be passionate about it. But his demeanor was like «eh».
I should give this three and a half, but there is so few butcher shops these days that when compared to all the grocery chain — this stands out the best by far. There are beef that are grass feed and many items are made in house. Reasonably priced.
As a note, the grocery store I buy meats from is WholeFood. I think it has the quality but the price is pretty steep. You don’t have to diet when you buying meat from there.

I love supporting my friendly local neighbourhood butcher. Honestly, I don’t know much about different cuts of meat, but it seems like this place has a great selection. I usually get a 4 pound pork shoulder for about $ 12 (which, by the way feeds two people for days and days!), and a pound of bacon for around $ 5. The cost is pretty much on par with Nester’s Market up the street, but I believe the the quality at Windsor is better. Without any sort of queue or number system it can be a bit intense at times, but I’ve never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be served and my purchases have always turned out to be delicious.
My one complaint has to do with their recent rebranding initiative. Sure their new Windsor logo is modern and has been well designed, but I am actually appalled by their new «Meat Men on Main St.» slogan. Please tell me I the not the only one out there finds this completely and overtly sexist? Hey Windsor, it’s 2013 and I’ve been served by female employees working in your shop. Don’t they deserve some acknowledgment too? Sheesh!

Based on their antique (working) cash register, this place is definitely older than me. Heck they even calculate prices by pencil.
Full of local, organic, free-​range, etc meats, they have everything you need. My favourite is their bacon. Great smokiness.
Service is decent, especially one of the guys that is usually there. Super friendly guys.
Are they the cheapest? No, but you definitely get quality.
