Craigdarroch Castle is a National Historic Site located in the heart of Victoria and is open daily for tours. Operated by a non profit charity, this meticulously restored building gives visitors a glimpse of privileged life in the1890’s. The museum is also available for private functions and offers seasonal theatre presentations.
Historique
Fondé en 1890.
Craigdarroch Castle was built between 1887 – 1890 for Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish immigrant who made his fortune from Vancouver Island coal. This Victorian mansion, overlooking the City of Victoria British Columbia, announced to the world that he was the richest and most important man in Western Canada.
Completed after Robert Dunsmuir’s death, his wife Joan lived in the Castle with 3 of her daughters and two of her orphaned grandchildren until her death in 1908. The Castle has since been used as a military hospital, Victoria College, the Victoria School Board, the Victoria Conservatory of Music and now is run as a historic house museum.
