Copenhagen Free Walking Tours

Visited last April 2015. We enjoyed every minute of the tour, Ben was our guide and he has great enthusiasm and knowledge about the city, very interesting and entertaining. After the 11am tour, we decided to join for the 4pm one, that’s how much we enjoyed it! Beyond expectations, recommend it 100%

Our tour guide was a native and had lots of economic and political insights, which was great. The tour started on time and had about 25 people. I was on a layover so I had to leave a little early to catch my flight (just tell the guide and he’ll direct you to the nearest subway station).
The subway to the city center one-​way is 36 Danish kroner or $ 5.53 (as of Sept 2015). I’d recommend buying the subway ticket before exiting baggage claim because otherwise you will stand in a line for 15+ minutes. You buy the subway ticket for the return trip from the station you are at so no need to buy it when you buy your ticket early. The meeting place at city hall is a short walk from the train station (about 10 min).

My tour guide, Jan, was great. His personality was amazing. I found his knowledge of the city to be inline with my likes (politics and economics) He did a great job of making us feel apart of the city/​country. I recommend these tours. They have tours during morning, afternoon and a evening. I will definitely return to Copenhagen and join this walking tour.

My tour guide, Magnus, was hilarious! His charismatic nature made the entire tour feel like a walk in the park. I’m sure all the other guides were just as passionate to share the city as he was. I definitely recommend these tours even if you’re just staying in the city for the weekend. You will get out a lot more than you put in.
So this is a free walking tour and is completely tips-​based, so you don’t have to feel obliged to give anything if you don’t feel the tour served you in any way. The value of the tour is something you’ll have to experience for yourself; as for me, the information was not something I’d get just walking around by myself.

Our walking tour was the highlight of our 2-​day/​night stay in Copenhagen, and it was free! Of course we felt compelled to tip well based on the incredible service given to us by Jane, our amazing tour guide! She was funny, educated, personable and a complete delight to be around. She felt like a friend giving us a private guided tour of the city, mind you we had at least 25 people in our group. Jane kept the tour moving at an appropriate pace, never making us feel rushed, but also getting as much into the tour as possible. The meeting place at city hall was easy to find and the group easily identified by the big yellow umbrellas. This tour makes for an ideal first experience, because Jane highlighted the areas we knew we might like to return to. She also gave great advice for areas to check out once the tour was finished.
PLAIN and SIMPLE — You will be missing out if you fail to take this tour while in Copenhagen!

I can say that these guys are the best in the business in Copenhagen! Most of them are locals themselves, not people just flown in for the job, and they all have a big passion for tour guiding. They do one every day, despite rain, snow or cold. If I ever have friends in town who want to see the landmark sights, I tell them to try this free tour. You will see the difference going with a local company :)

Summary: Great info from someone a passionate tour guide. Price is whatever you want to tip (don’t be cheap Unilocalers!). Possibly better in the late spring and summer. Check the calendar for dates or contact them first.
Details: The tour varies but starts with both city halls. They discuss the history of Denmark, so a great intro for folks that don’t know anything. During our trip, we mainly stayed on the West side of city center. Our guide had a lot of stories. His English was pretty good, although his sense of storytelling/​humor tended to be a bit different from America style. The tour is entirely outdoors. You will not be going into any of the said monuments. Hence, it’s not a bad way to start for an overview. If that annoys you, or if you’re short on time, you may want to forgo this.
Caution: I had to leave the tour an hour in as I was freezing. There is something about Denmark that it can be the same temperatures as back in New York, and yet the cold pierces all the way through. I couldn’t feel my toes at one point, despite have two layers (socks and pantyhose).
Cost: It is free. These guides work on tips. I tried to be generous, as the minimum wage by hour in Copenhagen is $ 20. Our group was huge, so I’m sure our guide did just fine for his three hour tour.
Suggestion to the tour company. Your history is really interesting, but potentially could be better at a nearby coffee shop next to the square as the talk lasts nearly 15 minutes per square. I’m sure you could work something out with the shop owner to where everyone profits.
