What a disappointing experience. This is a very pleasant hotel in a great location. The food at the restaurant next door is pretty good. The room was pleasant, but not overly special. The front desk, however, is amazingly rude and inhospitable. We had problems with luggage and the desk clerk didn’t even give us a toothbrush or razor. We tried to find a place to buy some clothes and they provided little or no help. Maybe this is the Danish style but generally listening to the way they talked to the clients amazed me.

The hotel has a mix of the old and the new, which at least for me, is very appealing. The hotel has a very large atrium, which lets the light in. Check in staff were friendly and efficient. There is no air conditioning at this hotel so you have to open a window for some circulation. Alternatively, there are cheap fans in the room you can also use. I had a room that opens up into the atrium and it can be quite noisy! Improving the insulation was apparently not part of the most recent renovation as you can hear noises in the hallway and the other rooms. As I have noted, I love the«old» hotels as it has its own charm. However, «old» does not mean that carpets or furnishings have to be worn. There was actually a hole under the carpet in the middle of the room! If you plan to do some work and use wifi, I would not recommend it. During my stay, the wifi was very weak and unreliable. My VPN won’t even connect! Overall, based on the price I paid, this property is poor value. I don’t mind paying high dollar for a hotel but I do expect basic items to meet my minimums, e.g., room and its furnishing in good repair, good insulation, modern amenities like air conditioning and decent wifi, etc. The hotel staff is friendly, which is fantastic. However, similarly priced(and even lower-priced hotels in the area) also have friendly staff.

Just checked in and I hate this place already. Unfriendly, unhelpful reception. Horrible view from room. That’s what I get for not choosing the hotel myself. Oh well, it’s only one night.

I’m in the process of staying at Kong Frederik for a little over two weeks, and I’m reasonably happy with the hotel. The rooms aren’t large, but the beds are comfortable. However — no fitted sheets. Which are both unexpected in Europe and a complete non issue given the bed type, but fair is fair. It also has a free mini-bar — not your Vegas hotel minibar with spirits, mind you, but a couple of Carlsbergs, a couple of San Pellegrinos, and some bottles of water. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference when you don’t have to continually buy a soda or a water from a store nearby, especially given what things cost in Copenhagen. I’m a big fan of the fact that there always seems to be a blood orange San Pellegrino within reach. The bathrooms are kind of hilarious — the shower fixtures are quite nice(although mine is in danger of falling off the wall) but the tub/shower itself is kind of awkward. The tub has two levels — neither of them large enough for me to stand on. And I’m not exactly huge, just a 6′ tall guy. Plus, the shower door only covers a little over half the length of the tub, meaning every time I take a shower, despite my best efforts, I destroy the bathroom. Water everywhere. But it works. It’s kind of what I’ve come to expect from European bathrooms, as stereotypical as that all sounds. And of course… no ventilation, but it’s an old building, what do you want. Breakfast is quite nice — a selection of pasty, bread, cheeses, cold cuts, plus streaky bacon and sausages, and yogurt, fruit, and granola. Really a nice spread, and it’s nice to not have to venture out each morning. However, I think either the language barrier or our idiocy means we thought the breakfast was included in the rate and it *definitely* was not, at almost $ 25 a day. Even in Copenhagen, this is pretty expensive. I ate here a couple mornings on some vacation after my business trip, thinking I was saving money, when in reality I was having by far the most expensive breakfast of anywhere I went in Scandinavia. The hotel even has a postage machine — no need to hunt for stamps, they’ll post it for you. I don’t know if there’s a surcharge for the service, but even if there is, I don’t care, since it kept me from having to find stamps when I just needed to send some postcards quick and go on my way. I should point out that the area can be loud — You want a room that looks out on the street, or else it will be a little stuffy. And then there is the problem of Tivoli nearby(fireworks on Saturday around midnight), the nightclub across the street playing Blondie at high volume, and a lot of bus traffic down Vester Voldgade. Just be prepared. Thankfully, work is wiping me out, so sleep isn’t a struggle. As someone commented in a Google review, «If you stay here in the summer, you’ll be hot and tired. Danish people don’t sleep in the summer.» There’s no need for air conditioning at this latitude, so I’ll ignore that bit. But if you’re sensitive to noise, the tired part will be spot on. So, this is just a 3. I wish the bathrooms were a little less awkward, and I am noticing that the maid staff is a bit rude when I spend the morning in the room(as I’m working very late each night and sleeping in) even going so far as to disregard the«do not disturb» sign as well as my requests(in both English and German, and yes, I know neither of those are Danish) that they return later. It’s very not cheap, between the breakfast misunderstanding and $ 250/night on average and pushing towards $ 350/night on the most expensive nights, so you’re paying for that bar. I should point out that my hotel in Oslo, which is even more expensive than Copenhagen, was cheaper, slightly better located for tourism, and included a similarly nice breakfast.
