This place lies right at the canal and sitting out in front, you would be able to watch straight over to Christiansborg. It is probaly one of the best locations, if you enjoy looking at tourists, because a lot of those passes by during a short amount of time. Also the official segway tour takes this road, so you’ll see those once in a while as well — It is quite hilarious to see how insecure those people are. At the café I was somewhat short on time, so we went for regular Caffe Latte and sat inside, as it was pretty chilly outside. The coffee was great and the place oozes of hygge with its very different furniture all over the place. If you look closer in the corners of the building, you can clearly see this is a very old building, which just adds to the charm. I didn’t get to taste their cakes, which looked delicious, but i’ll definitely be back and spend some more time here — probaly combining work, cake and coffee.

The morning of our final full day in Copenhagen, we wistfully sought to finally have the ever-recommended smørrebrød. No, the thought of smørrebrød didn’t make us sad, just the thought of leaving such a fantastic city. During our search we came across a set of stairs that led down to a small little café. I tried to discreetly peek through the windows at the menu, trying to see if we’d find our sandwiches here. Instead, I was greeted by a(friendly) stare down from a lively looking woman, waving at us and gesturing for us to come in. We did, but sadly no smørrebrød. The owner of the place, previously inviting us in, was now helping us find the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen, marking up various dots on a map. Looking at the menu, I couldn’t help but become interested in what this place had to offer. Sandwiches, cakes, coffee, beer. Why not? Flash forward to three hours later and we’re still sitting in Makkekaffe, playing yatzee and putting down beers. We’d been through coffee, sandwiches, and two delicious slices of cake. Being in here was like sitting at home. The place was decorated with mismatched furniture but it all fit together and created a cozy environment. There were plenty of games stored for guests to enjoy themselves while they ate and/or drank. Half of the appeal of this place was how charming and comfortable it is. The other half is, of course, the food. Everything(including the bread) is made by the owner. You can taste the freshness in all the ingredients. The sandwich I had wasn’t the most tasty I’ve ever eaten, but it was carefully hand-crafted and you can see and taste it. The cakes were incredible. I had to slow down because I wanted the pieces to last forever. A chocoholic could do some real damage here(after a visit to Christiania? You decide ;)) I’m so incredibly thankful to have stumbled upon this gem, and will make it a point to return during my next trip to Copenhagen. FYI: We never did have smørrebrød that day.

Stumbled upon this gem when we were wandering around town looking for somewhere to eat. Since everything was closed we thought we’d stop by here for a beer while we waited for the places to open and I’m glad we did! Walking down the narrow steps you enter a small and cozy basement-style café. At first it looks smaller than it actually is but entering the second room it opens up a little bit(OK, it’s still small) with some smaller areas that seemed good places to sit down and enjoy a coffee and get some work done. We were greeted by friendly smiles from the owner and staff and quickly found a table. We were seated just next to a longer table where a bunch of people were knitting. Quite a nice experience and I can understand why they sat at Makkekaffe, the sound level here actually makes it possible to have a conversation. We ordered some beers and without asking for it they also put two bowls of chips on the table, a small detail, but it says a lot about the service. Because of this my company decided to order food here as well. They ordered some sandwiches which are made using their own home made bread with three different types of flour and ingredients ranging from tuna, italian ham or a vegetarian alternative. It took some time, but I can understand why since I got a peek in the kitchen when I chatted with the owner, they are really home made from the ground up and the bread was very fresh. They suggested we try their wine the next time and I think we just might!

The woman at the counter was very nice; the place seems like a good location to hang out. When we went it was empty, but there are lots of chairs and couches, and some area for kids to play. We shared an italian pastry, and it was delicious. Ordered two iced lattes, and though tasty, they came with sugar. It was so sweet that I did not finish it, hence the 3 stars.

A cosy Italian café run by Julia from Naples. Delicious home made cakes. A view directly to the canals and The National Museum. Absolutely worth a visit.

My CPH office is just above Makkekaffe so you can imagine I hang out here a lot: morning coffee, meeting coffee, afternoon coffee, procrastination coffee — you name it, they have it. I am a bit picky of my coffee, I want it freshly roasted, grinded, organic, fair trade, and absolutely delicious, and Makkekaffe never disappoints. Seriously, for a neighbourhood joint you could do so much worse! I actually have quite a few meetings here, but I’ve noticed that the place is becoming increasingly popular so sometimes it’s difficult to find space. Two tips: 1. all the cakes are homemade and organic, and there are actually a couple of insanely delicious vegan options. 2. The café is located just across the channels and the Danish parliament so it’s a superb location to hang out outside during summer.
