A Barcelona native recommended this little place in the Barri Gotic. Spartan, old-school décor. This place has been around for a while and you sense that when you’re here. Our friend said the food here is very traditional and authentic, but we didn’t have anything here that seemed really outstanding. Average to below average food amongst the places we visited during our week in Barcelona. The staff was helpful and friendly, BUT they knew we were tourists and we were definitely treated differently than other customers. We we some of the first to be seated for dinner and almost the last ones to leave. Our service was very slow(even for Barcelona — which is saying something). At the end of the night our waitress semi-apologized for the tardiness and told us «What do you care, you’re on holiday right?» If the food were better, it wouldn’t have mattered as much, but honestly the food didn’t justify the wait.

This was my very first restaurant meal in Spain. After consulting Unilocal I ventured into the restaurant with high expectations. Atmosphere– lovely ambiance. Not crowded but a good crowd. Slightly dimmed to create a sense of history and romance. Simple honest décor. Service– friendly and patient waiters Food– a wide selection of cured meat and cheeses. The duck salad, and selection of pates were great. The only disappointment was the cider fish whose flavour profile was mild and salty. The blood sausage was flavourful, but was too salty for my family, especially after our pâté, meatball and cuttlefish surf and turf, and the fish in cider. We went through a second bread basket and finished out the wine and water quickly. Price– reasonable but the main course had tapa style portions. The salad was plentiful!

Pla de la Garsa is an amazing little place, practically unknown to visitors or even to many people from Barcelona, with authentic Catalan peasant food(for example rabbit, snails, mushrooms, duck, artisanal cheeses). With an unusual range of wines, a gorgeous 19th Century interior with beautiful tiles and a wrought-iron spiral staircase, tucked away off carrer Princesa in the Medieval street of Assaonadors. The building is 15th Century. Highly recommendable and original. It’s been going as a restaurant for more than 30 years. We enjoyed our meal highly and were treated in a most friendly manner despite a moderate language barrier — Catalan recommended, Spanish can cover it.

This is definitely a touristy review, but I don’t care, I love this place! I’ve been there twice, a few years appart, and each time I ate very well and found the place and service absolutely charming. I don’t remember any of the dishes I had but I do know I took one of the menus which allow you to try lots of differents dishes. All in all, it was really great! And the waiter also recommended pretty good wine. The only thing I liked a bit less was that the waiter gave us a menu in French straight ahead, as I’d rather read the name of the dishes in catalan, even if I don’t understand everything. But the waiter was very nice and gave me a new menu in catalan straight ahead when I asked! :)

We randomly chose this place as we walked around the neighbourhood. It seemed interesting because of the décor which has some old world charm. The menu was varied but a little bit catered to tourists which had me worried. But the overall experience was very good. The broad beans were amazing and so was the cod carpaccio and… ummm. some other cod dish we had that was their specialty it said on the menu. Everything was quite rich and doused in olive oil so be conscious of that when you order. The wine which our waiter helped us choose was also exceptional. The only bad thing we had was the dessert. We went for the strangely worded dessert that referenced nuns, jesus, and Judas. Don’t do it. It is bad bad bad. It didn’t help that our waiter couldn’t really explain in words we understood what is was. I bet the other desserts would have been great. Sorry we didn’t go for the limon or the truffles.

My dining experience took place back in November during a visiting to the country. The dishes were fresh in ingredients and presented with elegance and creativity. I believe I had the fish of the day then, it was sea bream. The price of the dining menu is pretty fair. The service of the two waiters I had were friendly and unique(they the table to talk about the menu and specials as they say this is their uniqueness in dining). All without a flair of pretension.

I’ve been missing Spain lately. Up until this year, I traveled to Barcelona for 3 straight years in a row. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Barcelona. The place is housed in an old building in a tiny little alley that we had the hardest time finding the first time we were there three years ago. Where was cell phone GPS back then? The cuisine is Catalan so if you’re looking for truly local fare, this is it! We have tried several items there but our favorites remain the same. Jamon is a must. If you’ve never had really good Iberian jamon, it’s hard to understand how utterly and unbelievably good jamon can be. It’s like paper thin pieces of butter melting in your mouth. The jamon here is good but the very best I’ve ever had is in this restaurant in Sevilla, the name of which eludes me at the moment. The Bagna Coada(Catalan anchovy fondue) is the very best item on the menu. I still recall the first time we ordered it. Here comes the fondue with a plate of veggies. We all looked at each other in horror. We aren’t really the vegetable loving type so we thought we would hate it. But the warm fondue changes everything. We were even dipping radishes into it and loving it. Yes, radishes!!! I don’t recall ever eating a radish other than when I’m in this restaurant. Seriously, this Catalan fondue can make me like anything that has been dipped in it!!! The duck confit, any of the cured sausages(blood sausage is a great choice), and their extensive selection of cheeses are also wonderful options. Okay, it can be pretty pricey especially when the euro is strong against the dollar but this place is a must for Catalan cuisine. I can’t imagine visiting Barcelona without coming here.

We went to that place because we had enough of Tapas and we really liked it. The look of the very old room is nice including the beautiful stairway and the old tables, chairs and lamps. The food was ok but we expected something better. It was not very tasty. The wine(Alanis Negra AN/2, Mallorca) was great. Overall it’s a good place if you’re bored from Tapas and want to eat some Catalan style food in a very nice and friendly environment.
