Spindle Mattress

Count me as another happy Spindle Mattress customer. I was burned by a year old mattress from everyone’ favorite local Imax theater, and was trying out the various disruptive dot coms trying to change the mattress industry. The first was a famous one-​size-​fits-​all mattress was too firm (my hardwood floors had more give). The second was a company that sold soft, medium and firm. Unfortunately soft was too soft for me and although they were willing to take it back and send a medium, if the medium was still too soft, then I would have been stuck with it. That’s why I went with Spindle. With Spindle you get 3 layers of latex that can be configured. So if the mattress you order is too soft or too firm, you can configure the existing three layers or get one new layer for a small fee.
I agree with the others about the awesome customer service. I ordered a medium full size. However, I became concerned about the weight. Because Spindle is all latex, the 3 layers together can be quite heavy. My full size mattress was going to weigh 120 lbs. My old Ikea bed was reinforced, but I was a little concerned, so I contacted Neal at Spindle. And it turned out I had reason to be concerned. The Ikea platform was unlikely to old up a 120 lb latex mattress. I added the Spindle foundation to the order.
I’ve had the mattress for about 2 months now. After about 3 weeks, my lower back began to hurt. And this is when my decision to go with Spindle paid off. On Spindle’s website are instructions on how to re-​arrange the existing layers of their medium mattress so it would be more firm (medium-​firm if you will). I followed the instructions and finally have the mattress I wanted and needed.

I had been sleeping on my old inner spring mattress for well over a decade and it was time to find a new one. After a lot of research and testing, I settled on some version of a latex foam mattress. Of course my first stop was at a very large furniture retailer that will remain unnamed. While their prices were competitive, I couldn’t help but feel like I was being sold at every turn, and to be honest, I don’ really need an IMAX theater, ice cream shop, and obstacle course to help me buy a mattress.
Based on my research, I knew I wanted a 100% latex mattress, and everything offered by the national chains in our price range seemed to be a top layer of latex over a polyurethane filer. To get a 100% latex mattress, many of those big retailers only had options that were 2 to 3 times the cost. Crazy! Spindle, on the other hand, has a 100% latex mattress at a reasonable price. I guess when you don’t spend money on wacky themes and giant screens in your furniture store, you can afford to be more competitive with pricing. I ended up purchasing a king size mattress and foundation after a trip to their factory store in Acton, and I couldn’t have been happier with the buying experience. There was no pressure and we got really honest feedback from Neal as we went through the selection process.
But that’s not where the story ends. Spindle ships their mattresses in a unique way which actually saves a lot of space. That’s really innovative, and it ensures that the mattresses get out extremely quickly. Of course, there was a little hiccup with FedEx. Unfortunately they delivered my mattress to a very similar address to mine by mistake. It was just a transposition of some numbers, but it meant that my mattress was sitting out on someone else’s porch!
Not knowing what to do, I tried to call Spindle. It was after hours so they were closed, but I left a message. Worried since they are closed on the weekends, I also sent an email to their main address, pleading for help.
This is where Spindle really shines. I got an email back from Neal that same night at around 10:30 p.m., offering help and his personal contact information to help us sort out the delivery issue. This is unprecedented, and very far beyond my expectations. I honestly was prepared to wait all weekend until Spindle opened up again, but they got back to me right away, and helped us get things back on track. While Neal wasn’t in the next day, he had already coordinated with FedEx and given my case to a colleague, Kim, who followed up with me bright and early with a firm solution.
Wow. Just wow.
And on top of all that, I got a really great value on the mattress I bought.

We are incredibly happy with our Spindle. We stopped by the showroom and Neal was great about answering all of our questions but also disappearing in the office and giving us a chance to lie on all of the floor samples and test them out without feeling rushed or awkward. He also helped us figure out the best softness (Firm) based on how we sleep, which was really helpful because we liked the feeling of both Firm and Extra Firm. On top of that he was able to time the shipping so that the mattress arrived after we got back from vacation — this is the kind of service that separates a small business from the big guys!
Putting the mattress together was not my favorite part (took us about 30 minutes, my husband got frustrated after 5), but if it saves me $ 1K+ I’ll take it! Sleeping on it has been incredible, and the fact that we are not inhaling anything weird makes it all the better.
Overall, couldn’t recommend Spindle more!

Neil, is beyond wonderful! we bought 2 king size latex mattresses. He was very helpful and knowledgable. Sleeping on these mattresses is a dream. if I ever have a question
Neil will immediately answer, call. It is not like in other places then after you purchase something, good bye. We had a problem with the bed, not the mattress and Neil helped us solve it.
I wish he would sell other things because I would buy anything from that store.

Beside being a joy to sleep on, their mattresses are highly adjustable. They are made from 3 – 4 layers of latex foam of variable firmness, and so not only can you pick firmness that is most comfortable before buying it, but if are not quite happy, you can buy a replacement layer of different firmness after sleeping on the mattress for several months at home.
One of the HUGE benefits of buying mattress in layers, is that the mattress is delivered in fairly small boxes, each layer in a separate roll. My wife has been dreaming of a king size bed for years, if not decades, but the staircase clearance does not allow anything bigger than the queen size through. With Spingle Mattress, I get to carry several compact boxes upstairs, unroll the layers, stuff them into the mattress cover, and earn so many brownie points that I can stop loading the dishwasher for the rest of my life.
The pre-​sale service is fantastic. There is no pressure whatsoever. The owner, Neal is a fourth generation mattress maker, and has true expert knowledge, that no salesmen in a box store may ever match. He builds and sells a fantastic product, patiently lets customers try every possible combination of layers, explains advantages vs other mattress types and brands. I am an engineer, and he answered my entirely too technical questions with both expertise and patience. So, if you want best possible, without qualifications, good night sleep (and other on-​mattress activities) head to Spindle Mattress.

Spindle offers a great mattress, and everything the other reviewers said about Neal and his patience in helping you find what’s best for you is true. My husband and I are both very happy with the selection Neal helped us make in the showroom. First, let me say that the mattress is very comfortable for both of us. The mattress is all latex, and is completely odor free from the minute you put it in the bedroom — unlike the odorous memory foam (we previously tried a memory foam topper before finding Spindle, and that’s a big issue with memory foam). Also, when you sleep on a latex mattress, your sleep isn’t interrupted when your bedmate moves or gets up.
Don’t go to a furniture store/​big box store, etc. to buy a latex mattress. The Spindle mattress is 100% latex, and the other stores will sell you something that is full of other materials besides latex. A Spindle mattress is a great value.

I can’t say enough about the great service, value and fantastic quality from Spindle mattress! Before my purchase, I made a road trip to Spindle’s showroom. The knowledgeable salesman spent hours with me letting me sample difference mattress types and customizations. He even stayed open nearly an hour late to accommodate me. After I ordered, UPS made a shipping error and he handled that very well also.
The king size mattress has been great. It arrived in four boxes (three for the mattress and one for two king size pillows) and each box was easily carried to the second floor of my home, by me, with no help. Okay, to be completely honest I’m in good shape, but it should be doable by anyone in reasonable condition. For two people its a cakewalk. One of my concerns was getting a king size mattress up my stairs, and with this latex mattress it was very easy. In fact, if I move, it will be easy to get it down the stairs also. Once I got it upstairs, I was able to assemble it myself, but it would have been easier with a second person. Still, it was doable. The instructions are clear; really, its just stacking up the layers. It fit on my platform bed perfectly. Normal king size fitted and top sheets work just fine.
I have been sleeping on it for five weeks now and I still find it very comfortable. It has not been too hot or too cold, its not hard and I don’t sink or sag into the middle of it at all. I can roll around on it easily and it conforms to my shape right away. I am thinking of adding a 3 inch topper, but the bed is so comfortable I have not yet bothered. I would buy this mattress again in a heartbeat!
