Amazing reds — we were surprised to find that there wasn’t a wine we didn’t like! The tasting room is small and doesn’t offer much of a view, but it’s worth the stop.

Hands down some of the best VA wine. I love the cozy little house atmosphere with the rocking chairs. Their red blend and petit verdot were bang on and you could tell that the winemaker knows what to make with the grapes and isn’t making anything experimental here. They know what grows well in VA and what to do with it once is is picked, so this is a place for real wine lovers for sure. Their best wines are about $ 29 and you get to keep your glass from the tasting. I highly recommend for wine fanatics who are well versed in old world style wines! Side note that they are now owned by Veritas and I have a sinking feeling that they will get too big as a result, so get here while you can before they are overrun!

Flying Fox is one of most favorite wineries that we’ve visited. This small and quaint tasting room had a great variety of reds and whites. The lady who helped us was quite informative, and the staff was very friendly. Tastings are $ 5, and we got to keep the cute stem less wineglass. You should most certainly put this on your list of wineries which are west of Charlottesville at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Flying Fox was the best vineyard we visited during our Virginia wine tour! The staff was very friendly and extremely knowledgable about the wine and property. The wine was very delicious(Cab Franc was our favorite), but we were disappointed to find out 2 wines were out, Merlot and Trio, which I’m sure we would have enjoyed. I respect the fact that they ran out, as they make wine in small batches and is telling of how delicious those wines are. Also, there was a French food truck outside of the property, which was a nice ending to our visit at Flying Fox. We will definitely be back!

Carol greeted us and gave us a nice tasting experience. Wines are fantastic, particularly the reds. The Cabernet Franc was particularly memorable. Tasting fee was a reasonable $ 5. The prices are also very reasonable at between $ 17 to $ 25 a bottle. This is a hidden gem and is highly recommended.

I wasn’t super excited to try this place out based on the small property, but I was pleasantly satisfied. The tasting was full, the server was very friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I wish they had a place to really sit and stretch out over a bottle, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. The wines, I really enjoyed most of their reds, especially the Trio and the Cab Franc; I really like they use oak barrels for all of them.

I’m suuuuuuch a fan of this winery. I’ve been twice and like to start with this one because it is very small, and I want to be sober and taste the wine! Their wines are fabulous, dominated by amazing reds. This year(2015) I was able to try the following: 1. 2014 Pinot Gris — perfect and crisp. Dry and citrusy. Bought a bottle. 2. 2013 Viognier — a little sweeter than I prefer them to be. Still very good. 3. 2013 table white — very easy to drink. Good with spicy food. 4. 2014 Rose — nice and dry with hints of strawberries and almonds. The way a rose should be. 5. 2012 cab franc(sold out) and with good reason. Peppery and smooth. Sad it was gone. 6. 2012 Trio — one of my very favorites. Blend of Merlot, cab franc, and Petit Verdot. Always get a bottle. 7. 2012 merlot — tannins cherries and mocha. Not bad. 8. 2012 petit Verdot — teeth staining dark and intense. My third favorite that they make. 9. Red table wine — off dry blend of cab franc and merlot. You can get away with chilling this one. Tasting lady was sweet and knowledgable and seemed very excited about the wine. Made the experience great. Free stemless tasting glass. Not great for large parties.

Flying Fox has become one of my favorite wineries in Virginia. Located in an unassuming house, Flying Fox is a smaller winery in the area that produces some really delicious wines. Table Red is my favorite wine there. It’s a very drinkable red, and it’s a great«introductory» wine for people who don’t normally drink red. In the winter, it’s great for making mulled wine, and it’s great chilled in the summer. We did have an interesting experience there one time, which is why I’m giving this winery four stars instead of five. After a tasting one time, the woman pouring(who I happen to know is not one of the owners) said, «can I make a recommendation that this be your last stop today? I’m looking at eyes and think it might be best to make this your last stop.» ThIs was after we had been to one other place and I, as the driver, had only had the tasting at Flying Fox to drink that day. It was offensive because she made so many assumptions. While I can appreciate the sentiment, she knew nothing about our situation that day and shouldn’t have made such a judgmental statement. Every other time we have been there(about 10 times), we have had a great experience, and the wine is so good that we keep coming back.

The smallest winery on Nelson 151, but what they lack in size they more than make up with(very popular) crisp whites and bold reds. Driving to Flying Fox you’d think you were entering someone’s small guest house. Not large and flashy like its competitors, the inside is a modest tasting room with a small bar and a fireplace sitting area. It feels homey and warm, and you’re provided with a much more intimate wine tasting experience. We were warmly greeted upon walking in and served immediately. A few of the wines in their tasting menu they were sold out of, including the Pinot Gris, Rose, and Cabernet Franc. However, for $ 5 we were still able to try six different wines. My favorite were the crisp Viognier(a must try in VA and a Gold Medal winner), the blended Trio(Merlot, Cabernet, and Petit Verdot), and the sweet Red Table Wine. However, the best was saved for last, with the Red Table Wine spiced and heated. This is a must try if you’re visiting in the colder weather, both white and red drinkers will love the smooth taste. The prices are also very reasonable at $ 16 – 20 a bottle. Flying Fox is another hidden gem along Nelson 151 and is highly recommended. Sit outside on the porch, try some french food from the food truck, and enjoy the intimate experience.

This winery is right off 151 and a great stop. The staff are very welcoming and enthusiastic about the wine. The wine itself is very good. While the building is smaller and quaint compared to others, the wine speaks for itself. My favorites were the viogner and red table wine. Great wines! The tasting is well priced and you will enjoy your wine tasting here. I recommend this as a must see for anyone staying in the area.

Very impressed. Visited Flying Fox on a whim — never heard of it before — and left very impressed. My credit card bill was probably glad it was too hot in the car to purchase any wine because I’m sure I would have walked out with at least 6 bottles otherwise. As I mentioned, visited this charming little(I do stress little — very small tasting room) winery on Labor Day. When we arrived around 12:00pm, there was one couple sitting outside at the picnic tables and no one in the tasting room. The lady who helped us was kind and helpful. Overall, I was very impressed with the wine. With such a small winery, and especially one that produces so many varietals — I was definitely skeptical but very happy to be proven wrong. My favorite wine of the tasting was the«Trio» and I liked it so much I got a glass to enjoy after the tasting. Their rose was also delicious, as was the Pinot Gris. Frankly, other than their two semi-sweet table wines, I liked everything I tried. Wish they weren’t sold out of the Cabernet Franc! We ordered a cheese plate to go with our tasting and enjoyed the rest with glasses of wine once we were done — they have a small side area where you can go and sit on couches and enjoy a glass. There’s a fireplace right there too which I imagine is lovely in the winter. One other thing — their wines are pretty reasonable, $$-wise. So many Virginia wines can be pricey so I was excited to see several bottles under $ 20.

Great little tasting room and some very nice whites and rosé. The location is just off 151 and easy to get to, but lacks the feel of a bigger place since the vineyard is not in the same place. If you want to sit on a porch and stare at the mountains for a while, you might want to go to Stinson or Afton Mountain. But if you just like a few tasty gems in a more intimate, less trafficked setting, Flying Fox won’t steer you wrong.

What a gem amongst the larger wineries that surround it. Flying Fox has an intimate wine tasting room with knowledgeable growers present. Their viognier is very good, and I left with a bottle of their Trio, which was delicious! I will return.

While visiting Rt 151, this is a «Must See» winery! They offer a nice selection of wines and the tasting room is quaint and beautiful and staffed with knowledgeable, helpful staff. They are also attached to the Bleu Ridge B&B, which looks very interesting.

Flying fox is one of our favorite wineries around. Both their reds and whites are quite good. They also have quite reasonable prices and are always willing to discuss their wines as much as you’d like. Although it’s not situated on a grand estate, it’s located right of the main road and is often open til 6, which lets you squeeze it in after most others close at 5.

I am no stranger to the CVille wineries. Mapping out different wine circuits and exploring the various vineyards is a favorite pastime of mine. The bf and I will often take a little weekend vacay to CVille, staying in a B&B near the mall(the downtown mall, NOT a shopping mall) and doing a little hiking and vineyard hopping while we’re there. Flying Fox is small, with an intimate tasting room and super friendly and informative staff. The vineyards aren’t actually on-site, although they are local. As a result, the grounds are small and it’s not as scenic as some of the other vineyards in the area. But it’s still totally worth a stop for the fantastic wine and the cute atmosphere. Today I visited with a bachelorette party of 13 and Flying Fox was our first stop. The dude who facilitated our tastings was awesome — he was really informed, outgoing, and remained seemingly stress-free despite the influx of customers who entered after our tastings began. We tasted around 8 wines(don’t quote me on that number), both white and red, and I walked out with a bottle of the Cabernet Franc, which I totally recommend if you’re a red fan. Tastings are $ 5 and include the tasting glass, which has the cute little logo of a flying fox. The solid variety of wines and the awesome staff make for an incredibly enjoyable experience

The dark horse is a flying fox. Of the four wineries my girlfriend and I tried that day, including Veritas and Afton, FF was our surprise favorite. Unlike the other wineries, we didn’t have to convince ourselves to buy a bottle. Instead, we had to talk ourselves down to just two bottles instead of all of them. I would describe them as after-work wines, instead of dinner wines. Tasting room is a small cottage right off the road. You’d mistake it for a someone’s house. $ 4 tastings where you can keep the glass.(Normally $ 5, but they were sold out of whites) The woman who helped us was friendly and knowledgable.

This is a very small winery with an even smaller tasting room but it’s worth the stop. They charge $ 5 for a tasting that includes a wine glass. The tasting price was reduced to $ 4 the day I was there because they were out of one or two of the wines. The best one was the Fox Red served warm with spices. It is sooo delicious.

Holy hidden gem! We’d done many of the wineries in this area, but never stopped by Flying Fox until we missed our turn for Veritas and decided to stop by since we were already on the way. The tasting room was small, and when we parked we were worried that we were in for another crap winery. Wow were we surprised. First off, the staff was super friendly. The guy who did our tasting was funny, knowledgeable and created a great atmosphere for enjoying wine. They had four wines to taste, and we liked them all. Each was quality, flavorful, decently priced and well made. We ended up buying three bottles: a viognier, a petit verdot, and a Trio(merlot, cab franc and petit verdot blend). Each wine was distinct, unique and enjoyable. We’ll definitely be added this to our loop during future winery visits.
