A good friend gave my husband and I a clay date for two for our wedding gift and we were really happy to redeem it tonight. Kevin(Captain Mudslinger) was super accommodating despite the fact that we A) lost our paper voucher and B) booked with one day’s notice. We really appreciated his flexibility! Captain Mudslinger is a super likable character who will create an experience you won’t ever replicate. He’s chalk full of stories, movie quotes, songs, and sidebars. Don’t let yourself become impatient with his distractions but instead relax and embrace the art he will guide you to create. This isn’t a clay class where someone does a demonstration and eight students proceed to each attempt a sad reproduction of the teacher’s work. You won’t produce something you’re afraid to show off here. Captain Mudslinger’s teaching method is literally hands-on. He will first demonstrate, then physically guide your hands through each step of the process to show you what good clay throwing FEELS like. And that is unlike any clay class I’ve taken before. I’ll refer friends on the east side and groups looking for a fun, free spirited outing to this place for sure!

My husband and I heard about Mudslinger Pottery about 2 years ago when we went on the St. Paul Art Crawl in Lowertown. At the time, we loved the pottery and purchased a bowl, and we also picked up a flyer that we kept for two years that talked about the Getaway Classes where you could learn to throw pottery. We finally got around to going back to visit Captain Kevin for a class, and it was a great experience. We had a private lesson with just the two of us and were able to make a bowl and a mug each. The lessons are hands on and the Captain really shows you how to throw pottery on a wheel. The first bowl you make together on the wheel and for your second item you get to do a little more on your own. At the end, you are able to choose from a variety of glaze colors. Our pottery class lasted about 3 hours and you are encouraged to brings snacks and beverages. The lesson cost $ 49 per person, which includes two finished items.(Note: the website says the cost is $ 35 per person, but it is actually $ 49). Bring your checkbook or cash, you can also pay with credit card but you will be charged an extra 3%.
