The pros: The gym is fairly new and has a nice pool. The location is key. If you work downtown or live in the city, it is very easy to get to. The cons: The hours are poor. Waiting until noon to workout on a Sunday makes it hard to have a normal day( Unilocal has incorrect hours listed). It is expensive, $ 43 and some change for an adult. It is the most expensive I’ve seen for comparable area gyms; Gold’s is $ 28, Akron U(alumni) is $ 35, LA Fitness is $ 30. And the staff is the worst I’ve ever seen at any gym. I cannot recommend.

First time here, and I left quite impressed. There are TONS of treadmills and cycling machines here. There’s also three basketball courts, a handball court, and some conference rooms and classrooms for good measure. It’s $ 46/month(or something) for people over 23, and $ 23/month for people under 23. That means it’s cheaper to work out here than to get an alumni pass at the SWRC on campus at the University of Akron. Considering that this Y is not overflowing with frat boys and sorority girls like its university-owned rival, that makes the price well worth it. Like Zachary said, it’s attached to Akron City Hospital via a series of pedestrian bridges, so you will frequently see nurses here working out. There seems to be a lack of weight machines here, unfortunately. Most of the guys were in one corner of the room, positioned kinda awkwardly. If they put in more machines, this would easily be the best gym in Downtown Akron.

This is a new YMCA that opened the beginning of 2011. It is connected to Summa’s Akron City Hospital. A very nice facility with easy access to the parking deck.
