We loved our first visit with Dr. Nelson. And discovered he was my sister’s optometrist… probably 25 years ago! Very good with kids, engaging and warm. Explained everything in detail. Office staff very friendly and helpful too. Going back for sure.

My family and I have been seeing Dr Nelson for over 20 years! He is as thorough as they come and always a pleasure to see. Although his staff has changed during those years, they have never disappointed us in assisting with eyeglass selection and always ensure they do their best in providing the best for the patient when it comes to insurance coverage. I would not hesitate in recommending Dr Nelson and his staff to anyone!

I walked in thinking «I’ll just look around aimlessly trying on glasses to see what I like». Once inside, Alexis greeted me and let me browse around. She must’ve noticed that I had no idea what I was doing and offered to help by first explaining how everything was organized. It then proceeded to be the best experience I’ve ever had! She was extremely patient and attentive to what I was looking for. Her professional expertise truly helped educate and guide me to the perfect pair of glasses. After coming here myself, it’s no surprise that they have such great reviews. Look no further for your optometric needs!

Everyone from the doctors to the office staff seems committed to making your visit a really great experience. They take the time for a very thorough exam, and I thought the frames the staff picked out for me to try were all flattering. They tightened up the frames on three existing pairs of glasses while I took my time making the final decision for new frames. Schedule your appointment early, though — it seems like they usually book up a month or two in advance.

They are great, always good service and they answer all my questions.

This experience is the best I’ve had with an optometrist. For the first time, I received in depth explanations to all of my questions and developed a deeper understanding of my own vision. In addition, the care was kind and attentive, with friendly and efficient office staff. This whole office feels like home. Thank you!

The office staff is amazing. I am an eyecare professional and am in 10 – 20 offices per week. You are lucky patients to have this group and the docs on your home turf. They really care about their patients and it shows

I’ve been a patient at Alameda Optometric Group for about 35 years. The staff and Dr. Nelson are incredibly pleasant, helpful, and thoughtful. I’m sure Dr. Sheppard is all these things as well, but I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting her. :)

Had a great visit. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Drs. Nelson and Sheppard are terrific. All my questions were answered and I felt like I had a thorough eye exam.

The staff is very welcoming and friendly. I love that they offer text reminders and have your info online. I’d highly recommend Dr. Nelson. I had an eye exam and he corrected mistakes with my contacts that a previous doctor made. He’s very knowledgable and personable.

Within 2 minutes of being here I had a warm welcome. Immediately felt comfortable which when I go to any kind of doctor already eases my anxiety. Bottle water was a nice plus. Dr Nelson was very helpful in helping me though the millions of questions I had regarding lasik. This has now become my primary eye doctor.

If you need eye care this is the office to go to… Doctors and staff all very professional, but not stuffy… Very friendly… I’ve been going here for years and because I live in Richmond, CA and the office is in Alameda, CA I decided to go somewhere else for my last exam… Major mistake… They are so worth the drive…

Great experience. The staff are all extremely friendly and prompt and are great at their jobs. Excellent communicators and I really like the fact that they ask what option of communication works better as email is so much easier for me than phone. At my appointment, Dr Sheppard took her time and explained everything to me and was also very nice and professional. Overall, highly recommend.

Gary Nelson and his team are AMAZING!!! They are ALL (I can’t single any one person out…) very kind, friendly, and eager to help! Through their actions, they let you know that you, as an individual, are very important. Helped with insurance, and even advised that they would make a call to the provider to check on whether or not they would be able to provide a nose piece for a pair of sunglasses that I purchased at Alameda Optometric in 2010; I did not ask them to do this, they simply took it upon themselves to say they would do this. I’m so glad my insurance changed so I am able to treat with Dr. Nelson again!!! I’m very excited about this!!!

I had the greatest experience here at Alameda Optometric Group! They have the most friendliest and professional staff. The sweet young lady Alexie was very knowledgable and kind when it came to assisting me in finding new glasses too. Dr. Shepard was great, and my new RX is amazing! I’m seeing the world in HD. Please note that this review is for the office staff, not for the doctors. Lack of initiative and unclear correspondence.
My first visit was an emergency as I had a swollen eye, not sure what it was. The doctor was great and advised that it was an allergic reaction. The staff on the other hand, unsure if they could accept my insurance advised me that they would bill me if it didn’t go through. I offered to pay cash up front but they said not to worry.
About a month later, I scheduled an appointment for a regular check up, with the female doctor. I asked the staff specifically if my insurance went through before and they said there was no problem. I called to reschedule my appointment, since I had family unexpectedly visiting, and they said the female doctor would be on vacation so if I wanted her, I had to wait quite some time. So I said, never mind. I will keep my current appointment because I preferred the female doctor.
Note: Nothing against the other doctors. It was just a preference since I had already interacted and met with the female doctor.
I show up for my appointment and upon checking in, they advised me that the female doctor was on vacation so I was to meet with the other doctor. I asked why they did not advise me of the change prior to my appointment, since I specifically mentioned that I preferred the female doctor… No answer. Then they ask me if I called my insurance since they were not sure if they could accept it. Again, I asked why they did not tell me this over the phone when I asked SPECIFICALLY about my insurance when I tried to reschedule. The response I received was… I could call my insurance «really quick», it will not take that long.
Yes, it would be a quick call. But at that point, I was annoyed with the poor communication and customer service. So I left and will never go back.

Loved Alameda Optometric they where totally on the J. Dr. Sheppard and the women in the office are very good, friendly, and professional. Best experience I have ever had at an optometrist.
Picking out glasses has never gone this easily.
Will be recommending to my friends and family
