Kumon Math and Reading Center of Alameda

We experienced outright discrimination because of my daughter’s diagnosed learning disability! Stella discouraged our every attempt to sign her up and and least «try» the program. She is quite rude and arrogant. However, the Park Blvd. location in Oakland was SO welcoming and excited to work with my girl! Although we have to travel farther, I’m relieved to have found a teacher who will be encouraging rather than a negative influence.

I went to this Kumon about 8 – 10 years ago when Mr+Ms. Choi were there. I am pretty sure other people can agree with me but i very clearly remember Ms. Choi being extremely intimidating and rude (Mr. Choi is the exact opposite). Especially at the time when i was younger and vulnerable. I remember multiple times where she would be so rude and blunt with kids until they cried, it was very hard to concentrate when you hear someone crying their ass off as you study knowing you’re up next with her. I attended this Kumon for about 3 years doing math and reading, i have to say it hasn’t helped me at all and i hated it so much as a kid (but to be honest, it might just be me… i mean, all kids at that age LOVE math reading and studying right?). Actually i hated it SOO much, i remember doing this Kumon work on top of the school work i already had to do. Sorry to rant but to keep it simple, and now that i am grown up; If Ms. Choi is anything like how she used to be i would not recommend taking my kids there.

I’ll note ahead of time that I haven’t been to Kumon in about 8 years, but I believe it is still the same headmaster and headmistress that runs the place.
Mr. and Mrs. Choi (married to different Mrs. and Mr. Choi, not each other) have always been good for advancing my math skills about two to three grade levels ahead of my peers. Mrs. Choi is stern when she needs to be, and both of them are always helpful. They have a genuine desire to see you succeed via the Kumon method, providing guidance to help you learn on your own. They’ll never just give you the answer, they’ll take you through the steps to get to the correct answer, and they always demand mastery of the current topic before advancing to the next. This was well worth my parents’ money. :-p
