Nice place. The food is good, the beer selection is great, I like the draft choices. It is acceptable priced for good imported German beer on draft. The place has a very friendly and caring staff. I went there to watch a soccer game and had a great time. I certainly recommend this place. The parking is bad because you have to park on the street somewhere in the neighborhood.

This place is fantastic. Consistently delicious meals, vast selections, specials, beers, and wonderfully nice and attentive wait staff. Couldn’t ask for a better place for lunch and dinners. The outdoor seating is dog-friendly but can get a little nippy towards the night. The only downside, but great for their business, is that it tends to be pretty popular: so during peak times, it’ll be difficult to find parking and the wait time can be close to an hour. But every time we’ve gone, it has been excellent!

We went to Speisekammer on a Sunday night as it had been recommended by friends and was near their home. We were not disappointed– delicious schnitzels and strudel. Great atmosphere and beer list! Crowd was joyful and friendly. Yep, I’d go back… when on the island

The best German restaurant in the Bay Area, bar none. That said, note the wonderful(authentic) pumpernickel rye is no longer in the breadbasket… sigh. But the remaining breads are fresh and it’s impossible to resist that garlic herb butter, an amazing specialty of the house. Cabbage rolls, for those of us who grew up with them, are wonderful. Sauce is half broth, half tomato, giving it a more savory edge. Classic ground meat/rice filling. Weiner Schnitzel is excellent, mashed potatoes very light and fluffy. I prefer the veal Jaegerschnitzel, with a creamy mushroom gravy. Love, love, love the new usage of true sour red cherries in various dishes. Soooo much better than Bings or Queen Annes in cooking; Montmorencies are the best! A special of lamb chops(in lieu of venison) with sour cherry sauce was spectacular — would love to see this on the menu all the time. Sauerkraut however, sometimes is rinsed but sometimes not(PLEASE rinse the kraut before you braise it, so much better that way!). Was disappointed in Nurnburger sausages last time so did not try them this time. Spaetzle was very good, but now a milder cheese on the sauced version. Pickled veggies are wonderful, loved the salted/dilled cucumbers best. New pastry chef Neyva de la Rosa has upped the desserts, but still sometimes a mixed bag. Coconut trifle was stunning and beautiful. Espresso crème brûlée absolutely rocked. But a visit more recently had changed it to a lavender crème brûlée that was much too sweet and gunked up with cornstarch; complete Fail. But a Black Forest cakelette was almost classic, albeit no Kirsch or liqueur syrup; lots of sour red cherries and whipped cream, however. People who rave about Brotzeit Lokal and Gaumenkitzel should come here instead. The food is better, the beer is better, the service is better, and the price tag lower for big plates with plenty of gemütlich. This is the German food I grew up with!

Speisekammer is truly authentic for food and service. Last year I spent two weeks in Germany and fell in love with the country, food and beer. Speisekammer reminds me of my favorite pub in Hamburg from décor to menu selection. Beer selection covers all the bases from Pils to Hefes. Drink a few of these and you’ll look at domestic brews to be pure bear sweat, and that is being kind to even craft brews. Got to love German Purity Law. So far I have only had the brats and fish plate. Both were incredible and of the same quality, portion and flavor profiles of Northern Germany. Service is attentive and cordial. Anyone not giving Speisekammer 4+ stars needs to take a nap before they come here. Ich lebe Speisekammer

Speisekammer does a superb job imitating a German setting and serves an assortment of authentic German food. There’s a great outdoor patio for lunchtime and a beautifully adorned interior. I was incredibly impressed with their cheese and fruit platter: Käsebrett mit früchten. Top notch presentation and quality of cheeses. Each cheese had its own unique flavor, and the fruits helped cleanse the palette before trying another. HIGHLY recommended — this is what I’m coming back for. We also ordered the Wiener Schnitzel Sandwich(pork cutlet with lettuce/tomato/onion and horseradish sauce) and Wurstgeröstel(scrambled eggs with sausages). There was really nothing too special about these entrees, but they were HUGE portions(which explains why it’s on the pricey end). I only ate half the sandwich — along with the fruit and cheese platter — and was stuffed. The entrees also come with your choice of German fries(they made sure to avoid the word French ha ha), roasted potatoes, or salad. If you’re going as a party of two, I would order one entrée and the cheese board to split — fills you up to the brim. Until next time, Speisekammer!

Hate to say it but this place was jus okay. Do keep in mind, I’m not a beer drinker. The restaurant was nice. There was deck seating as you come in. Plenty of benches and tables. Very social setting the sunny day I came in after work. The front room was nice and lively also. We were seated in the back room which was much more mellow. Food: We ordered the potato pancakes, which was actually my favorite part of the meal. Nice crispy texture and seasoned perfectly. the cabbage rolls: nothing spectacular. It was bland to me sadly. Sausages on the appetizer menu: our sausages were dry!!! I was so dissapointed. Pork cutlets with mushroom sauce: again it was a miss for me. I was expecting amazingness from reviews but the mushroom sauce reminded me of the Campbell’s gravy I use for thanksgiving. There were chunks of mushrooms which I appreciated. Fries: these had a great texture. There was a sauce they gave with the fries that was interesting in a good way. Maybe curry ketchup? Customer service was great. A fly drowned in my sisters beer and they kindly offered her a brand new beer.

Achtung! «Bar open all day» printed on the magnificent menu of this little Bavarian cove is enough to make parched paupers weep for joy and relief. Speisekammer has character, charm, fabulous dranx, eats, and a pet-friendly outdoor patio. Expansive drink menu rocks traditional, imaginative and fun. Who knew there would be a full bar at, ostensibly, just a biergarten. And who knew expertly crafted cocktails are available as early as lunch. Speisekammer mixes everything from martinis to negronis, sidecars to sazaracs, mai tais to mojitos, moscow mules to margaritas, and of course Jägermeister concoctions– hard pass on that. Offerings of draught and bottled bier from Germany, Belgium as well as our golden state, are as vast and appealing as the cocktails. A hot toddy is even in their repertoire. This bar has something to quench every thirst. Nice chunky half-inch thick pieces of cucumber inhabit Kühl Cumber. muddled cukes, Austrian elderflower syrup, gin– usually Beefeater but I requested they substitute Blue Coat from Philadelphia(priced between Beefeater and Hendricks)– and a splash of soda. Melding together excellently, this quke-tail is ideal on a warm day. Pearadise. Grey Goose pear vodka, Canton ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice and apple juice. is pear-fekto. Whiskey bevvy was potently good too. But wait. There’s food. And my oh my is the grub grand-tastik. Kassler vom Grill(Grilled Smoked Pork Chop) is like the finest ham-steak you could ever want, so melt-in-your-mouth tender– a *must order* if you enjoy pork. Weisskohlroulade, cabbage roll stuffed with seasoned ground beef topped with tomato onion sauce, came with mash potato. very filling and tasty. Bratwürst sandwich is piled high with house-made Sauerkraut. Egg scramble with roast potato, beets in the salad of some brunch items, Reibekuchen(potato pancake) served with apple compote, Kleine Nürnberger bratwürstchen = six grilled sausages over Sauerkraut. All of the afore-mentioned are m-mm-gutt! Sweet and spicey Bavarian-style mustard by Löwensenf from Düsseldorf, contains apple juice and chili extract. The brand’s yellow mustard is also on the table. Der cocktails und condiments are top-notch in their own right, as well as complement the food so nicely. I envy lucky Alamedans who get to enjoy this neighborhood bar daily. Fünf-Sterne, Speisekammer, you Germanic delight. Auf wieder sehen!

Two words: potato pancakes. A little piece of Germany in the form of an East Bay beer garden in Alameda. Bring your dog, or the whole family and enjoy an afternoon in the sun. Schnitzel is great too :)

I like the atmosphere and beer in this place better than I do the food. I grew up with authentic German food and this isn’t what I remember as a kid from Grandma — the potato salad and sour kraut here is Americanized somehow. The kraut tastes overly sour and straight from the can. My American friends love it tho. I think that is to be taken into consideration — they are offering what people want. I remember the dessert cake to be overpriced and nothing special… with the exception of the presentation of it. Go here it is lots of fun. There is even a regular table for German speakers. Grab a bunch of beers. Carefully choose what you order and ask a friend who goes here often for a recommendation so you have somebody to blame if its bad. Parking lot is small but I always get one in there at the hours I usually go. If you like some entertainment schedule your trip around times when there is a band playing.

My girlfriend and I have been wanting to explore Alameda more, and I saw that Speisekammer offered a lunch deal on Groupon, so we decided to check it out. The Bay was experiencing heavy rain on the day we visited the restaurant, so we sat inside. It looks like the have an outdoor seating area that would be great for sunnier days. Speisekammer has a great selection of beers(both on tap and bottled) including several German beers. I had a half liter of the Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier(why wait until the fall?), which I really enjoyed. To eat, we ordered full portions of the currywurst(pork sausage in a curry ketchup sauce with fries) and the weisswurscht(white pork-veal sausage with a pretzel). The clear winner out of these two dishes was the currywurst. The curry sauce was zesty and complemented the pork sausage well. The fries were thin and crispy. The weisswurscht was less impressive. The sausages were soaking in a bland watery broth that didn’t add much flavor to the sausage. To be honest, I’m not sure if I was supposed to eat it or not. I took a small spoonful of the broth, and it just seemed like hot water. The sausage itself could have used a little more spice/seasoning too. The pretzel and the spicy mustard redeemed the dish, but I would have preferred a more substantial side dish like potatoes and sauerkraut. We both finished our meals even though we weren’t extraordinarily hungry. Seeing as we both ordered full portions, I feel like half portions would probably be too small. While no single dish stood out to me as exemplary, everything was still really good. The atmosphere and service were both great. I think this is definitely a place that we’d come back to again.

#56 Ich liebe diesen Ort. Es hat köstlich wunderbares Essen, Bier und Musik. Me and my friend decided to try something new for dinner Friday night – Speisekammer made the cut – and what an awesome choice. We arrived about 9PM and the place was totally packed. The music was loud, the beers were flowing, people were kind of swaying to the music, everyone looked happy. The hostess greeted us and led us to our table immediately. We were lucky enough to grab a spot in the dinning area attached to the bar where the live music was happening. There were about six people in the music group – men and women – playing various instruments, singing and truly having a blast as they entertained the masses. I was in love with this place upon arrival. After getting comfy at our table, we began looking at the Beir menu(that was the«beer» menu). So many choices for any beer enthusiast. My partner decided on a HUGE stein of some German beer that looked like it was about a six pack poured into his sehr groß mug. He said it was one of the best beers he ever had – delicious ale, super cold, crisp and amazing. I think he was almost drunk off such a large stein of beer ;) We decided to begin ordering, as everything looked so amazingly delicious. We chose our starters: Kartoffelsuppe mit geroestetem Speck(potato soup) Klein Nürnberger Bratwürstchen(grilled sausages) The soup was a special for the day and it was divine. Creamy, thick and rich. Then came the six delicious sausages. They were so yummy and served over sauerkraut. The server also dropped off two jars of house made German mustards – one spicy and one sweet. Next we had: Spatzle(German pasta) Pretzel The spatzle was really great, I did mix in some of the mustard though. And, the pretzel was wonderful – salty and soft. Then our main courses: Sauerbraten(Tri-tip with red cabbage and spatzle) Rotisserie Hühnchen(chicken in herb buttter) My chicken was so moist and delicious. It was served alongside of broccolini, and mashed potatoes. My companion had the tri-tip and cabbage and he loved it. We ate until we were so stuffed it hurt. The music was so good, we really had a marvelous time. The group was outstanding in harmony and unity. I really had a great time. It was like we were transported out of Alameda and into a little mountain town in Germany for the evening. We made an excuse to stay just a little longer to listen to the music – dessert. We grabbed a piece of German chocolate cake to share and it could not have been more delicious. I will be back to Speisekammer, but next time we are going to come earlier for beer and a cheese board to share. Stephani Smiles for Speisekammer ;) #ichliebeDeutschLebensmittel

One of our friends is from Germany and he wanted to give us a taste of his culture before he went back so we ended up here for dinner. Right off the bat he was impressed with the décor and feel of the place– he really felt at home! I ended up ordering the appetizer plate of sausages and sauerkraut and the wiener schnitzel. My wife got the Jagerschnitzel and my friend got the sauerbrauten. All of the dishes were excellent! The sausages were tasty and the sauerkraut tasted much better than the generic stuff I’ve been given through the years for my hot dog. The entrees were tasty, in fact my friend said that the sauerbrauten is better than the one his mom makes! Nice selection of beers as well. The only downsides are that the place can get pretty busy so you may be in for a wait and it’s a bit pricey. But I suppose you get what you pay for… we’ll be back again!

I’ve been here so many times which shows how much I love this place. They never disappoint! Let me start by saying I’ve been to a similar more well known spot in the city(suppenkuche) which I assumed would be better, but nooooothing beats Speisekammer. Here’s the food breakdown Bread and butter — comes with pumpernickel and homemade dinner rolls resembling softer ciabattas. The best part of this free starter is the garlic herb butter that comes with. AMAZING. Bratwurst plate — comes with a heaping serving of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. The brats are juicy and salty serving as a perfect compliment to the mellow mash and tangy sauerkraut. Perfection people. Oh! And the mustard is so good slathered on everything. Mussels — usually these are amazing because the sauce is buttery garlicky and tangy. This time around the sauce was heavy on the white wine which I don’t mind but it changed a flavor profile a bit. I’m being a snob but I still love it. Bread pudding — basically a huge matzo ball/dumpling made with bacon bits and covered in a dark mushroom sauce. It’s a good starter but best for sharing as it will take up space in your belly that should be filled with brats! Potato cakes — meh. I usually like spicy in my potatoes and these are pretty mild. Like a hash brown. The apple sauce is the best part of this. Spatzel Mac n cheese — oddly on the sweet side, but cool to try at least once to experience it. I enjoyed the texture of the spatzel. Beer– I’ve tried many and really enjoy the Oktoberfest beer. There is also a delicious pear cider on the menu too. Go for anything on the draught beer list and you won’t be disappointed. One of my best memories was captured here and has taken me a while to write this review as I’ve been holding it dear in my heart. My father has traveled the world throughout his Military Career and of all the meals he’s eaten, he had been craving a good wiener schnitzel. It was certainly hard for me to find a German restaurant since we live an hour away from Alameda but once I found Spisekammer, he was more than willing to make the hour trip for this food adventure. It was Father’s day and I made a reservation for three earlier that week. Upon arrival we had difficulties finding parking, especially handicap so I had to drop them off, park a few blocks down, then meet up with them at the restaurant. We were seated in the dining area behind the bar which had dim lighting and large community tables. The complementary bread(s) were very delicious. The variety of breads were very good and pleased my dad. He ordered his Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein, I did as well, and my mother ordered a seafood plate. In addition we ordered the potato pancakes, Sauerkraut, and Red Cabbage. The service was up to par until the restaurant started to packed, the more patrons, the less we saw our server. Well, according to my dad the Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein was alright. I, however, liked it. The Potato Pancakes were a bit too greasy but I was a fan of the sauerkraut. I could pass on the red cabbage. Although Spisekammer didn’t live up to my dad’s expectation, he did enjoy his meal and that’s all that mattered to me.

A friend of mine brought me to this hidden gem on October 17th after a symposium. All I can say is this was the best German food and German beer that I have ever had! All the food was authentic, and they have a large selection of German beers. I had the Bratwurst Gegrillt which was two grilled lean pork bratwurst with cracked spices served over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. It was all so delicious, and the sauerkraut was to die for! They serve this in a full order or a half order. That half order is one bratwurst. And for the beer I had the Weltenburger Asam Bock which was a dark, rich and multi beer from Germany with a hint of chocolate. Delicious! They have a large variety of foods to choose from on their menu and most of them are full and half Orders so depending on your appetite you can get plenty of food. And their drink list is very large as well. There are a variety of wines from Germany, Sonoma, Napa, France, and other well as a large variety of cocktails, and beers! They also have a large Friday have appetizers to choose from. There is nightly music, there is a patio in the front seat so on those hot summer nights you can sit outside, or you can sit inside the restaurant where there are plenty of seats to choose from. It is a very popular place so it is very noisy inside. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, it is good for groups, as well as good for kids. The night that we went to the restaurant, the service was excellent. My friend has been here several times and said it has always had good service. If you’re looking for a restaurant that serves traditional German foods this is the place for you. Unfortunately for me it’s a good 1 hour and 15 minutes away from my house. But if I’m craving German food this is where I will come.

The Bitbeurger Pilsner beer is my favorite now. I love quality laws in Germany that make the beer much higher quality. Love their fries, potato pancakes with whatever sausage I feel like. Beer lovers should come here more often, they provide the quality your looking for. I enjoyed an Hefenweizer Octoberfest today as well as the Bitbeurger. And I did it during the happy hour timeframe, which is from 3−5pm Tue-Fri. After two .5 liter beers, my body doesn’t feel like crap so thats a real test to what kind of beer they serve up here. In total, I think they have about 15 – 20 German beers on tap, and many bottled. The draft beers are the winner. Gulp, gulp, gulp! I enjoy drinking right outside under one of their umbrellas with someone or by myself, either way! :D

I have such a hidden love for German bars and grub. This location has an awesome patio out front and 2 TVs inside by the bar. Upon arrival, we were greeted and given a table immediately. They have an extensive beer menu that could make any beer lover smile. They also have a full bar if you want something else. Food-wise, I was mostly happy with what we ordered. There was a special that they offered which was a fish and seafood stew. They were out of a particular fish so I was ok with them substituting for extra salmon and mussels. This bowl of goodness was fantastic. I was sad after every bite knowing that it would be over soon. The seafood was cooked to perfection and the broth was seasoned to the T. The Jägerschnitzel was also delish. The pork was moist and tender. The schnitzel was definitely homemade and covered with delicious gravy. Awesomeness. A half order was good enough for me. The potato pancakes, unfortunately, left much to be desired. It was flavorless although texture was super crispy. I’d probably skip out on that next time. No complaints about service. 4 stars.

I love German food, and when I heard there is a good place in the East Bay, I had to drop by. Speisekammer(pantry) is on Lincoln near Park in Alameda. They offer traditional German dishes, and real German beer on draught. I ordered a bratwurst w/sauerkraut & fries($ 9.50), and a Hacker-Pschorr($ 7 — maltier lager w/a crisp finish). First of all, the bratwurst was very good. It had a nice snap to it, and the flavor really stood out. The only downside was there could have been more kraut: 4 Stars. On the other hand, the beer was excellent. It was the perfect accompaniment to the bratwurst on a hot day. Lastly, it was reasonably priced: 5 Stars. I was watching Women’s World Cup, and I couldn’t have picked a better place. There is an outdoor patio, in addition to a cool bar w/some nice handles. Lastly, there are some tables in the back: 4 Stars. The service was OK. The frauleins took a while to acknowledge me, but they were OK after that: 3 Stars. I definitely want to come back and try some of the apps and entrees for dinner. Plus, I can see myself trying some(or all), of the German beers on tap!

I am not a fan of German cuisine. I did enjoy the food here and the service was very friendly and professional. The waiter asked questions about my beer preferences and based on that brought me a rather plain Bitburger ale which was disappointing as I drink exclusively micro-brews and more interesting beers of character. My spaetzle was tasty as a comfort food but was essentially macaroni and cheese.

So, we had reservations at the Speisekammer for 16 people yesterday. The restaurant was crazy busy, but it was so awesome. All of my guests were so pleased. Everyone got most tasty food and drinks and we had so much fun. The waitresses and waiters and Brendon were über-nice and we always felt taken care of. The FOOD was so extraordinarily good that I felt I was at a Restaurant back home in Germany so I started talking in german as a reflex. No problem for the Speisekammer Staff, they have some german waitresses, I was impressed. It just feels like coming home, whenever I go to the Speisekammer in Alameda. If it wasn’t so far from my work, I’d try moving in that restaurant with all the great food and the nice people.
