I miss this store. Finally got a new fish tank, little one (especially compared to the 92 gallon tank i used to have). Searching for just the right fish store now. The first place i went today is ok, will have to check out a couple of the other local offerings, but i don’t know that anything will compare to here.

I stopped in while visiting the area (I’m from CT). I spent over an hour browsing and speaking to a very nice and knowledgeable employee. When I explained that I had an almost 3 hour drive home, she assured me the fish would be fine, and took extra care when bagging to be sure it would make it. If I am ever in the area again, I will certainly stop in and visit.

Davey Jones Locker features beautiful fish. Yes, you’ll pay more than you would going to a big box store, but the fish are healthier, better cared for and you’re supporting a fixture in our community.

Davey Jones is right on Delaware Ave, and there has always been ample parking when I’ve visited, which is a concern for a lot of people when driving into downtown Albany.
The owner and staff are super nice and will either leave you alone to browse or tell you every fish fact in the world, whichever you prefer. They were very helpful with the setup process of my brand new tank, which was great because our fish have thrived instead of dying.
The owner’s dog Liam hangs out and is fantastic, very friendly and not at all in the way (and he’s big, so that’s saying something). There’s a surprisingly large selection of fish for a place tucked into a converted city home. I also love that they have an art gallery, although so far I’ve been too lost in the fish to make it to the art.

An absolutely wonderful treasure in the heart of Albany on Delaware Avenue. Tropical fish as far as the eye can see in floor to ceiling tanks…
beautiful specimens of fish and other creatures… the closet thing Albany has to an aquarium… and perhaps even better… you get to take home what you see…

Definitely the best aquarium /​pet store in the Albany /​Troy area. From the name of the store to the really amazing and exotic selection of aquarium fish, I was blown away with fascination. This store is more defined for its aquaria collection. When you first walk in, directly in front are two incredible show tanks nicely aquascaped with huge pieces of driftwood, plants, and well stocked with the larger type of community fish. On display were occelated stingrays, exotic catfish, cichlids, and schooling fish.
In the middle room, they have a wide selection of freshwater tanks of so many species of fish. This is where they have their large Discus Fish show tank stocked with schooling Rummy Nose Tetras that was so beautiful to behold. Since I had worked nearby, I would frequently come in here to just view the collection. In the back room is a rather smaller collection of marine fish and some breeder fishes, and Bettas (Siamese Fighting Fish). They do have a good selection of glass fish tanks in various shapes and volumes. This is also where they stock their small animals and herps which was rather kind of limited.
The owner is extremely knowledgeable, as well as his staff, all of whom are friendly and attentive to their customers questions and needs. What also makes this aquarium store fun is they have the friendliest pet dog who has free reign around the store which he shares with a tortoise roaming around the store also. Just have to be careful to avoiding stepping on it! Whenever I return to the area, I make it a must visit.
A good individually owned aquarium /​pet store is like a rarity nowadays, facing fierce competition from the larger chain «big box» pet stores. Davey Jones Locker is a great aquarium store.

This is yet another reason to love my neighborhood. we used to come here when we didn’t live here. they have all sorts of fish (many many exotic ones) and other cool aquatic creatures. they had a rope fish last time we were there and it was almost 2 feet long when it unfurled. really really cool. they always have sea horses, adorable puffer fish and many funky lizards and turtles (they are in the Back back room). oh, and sometimes they even have big Rays of some sort.
the owners are a bit eccentric but so so nice. when the filter for my turtle tank broke i took it in and they dismantled another one and sold me only the pin that i needed instead of making me shell out the dough for a whole new unit.
if you take kids with you however, give them the lecture ahead of time — no taping on the glass. the owner has to deal with too many young punk/​hoodlum types (someone stole a $ 200 lizard a while back by just putting it in their pocket and leaving) and does not tolerate kids untended.
we get the feeder fish for the turtles here (i know. i cringe. i hate doing that but they need meat once in a while to remain healthy and until mom asks for them back, they are my responsibility.) and they always charge me for a dozen or two but give me Way more than that.
so, a great place to get stuff you need but also a great place to go and just peruse.
