Dr. Schultze is phenomenal. I had my PRK surgery performed by him and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made. The process wasn’t without some administrative bumps, but overall I’m entirely satisfied. I first met with Dr. Schultze to go over my options and to determine which procedure — LASIK or PRK — would be best. The amount of correction that I needed wasn’t anything too huge(my eyes were 20⁄80 with an astigmatism and 20⁄100). After performing his exam on my eyes and discussing my needs(particularly regarding my aviation involvement), he recommended PRK over LASIK. The initial visit costs about $ 150, but they apply that $ 150 toward the cost of your surgery. The way this works is that you deal with Dr. Schultze and his practice, Cornea Consultants of Albany, but the procedure is actually performed at another office: TLC in Albany. They have the equipment and Dr. Schultze performs the actual procedure. That’s where my only problems occurred, specifically in the communication between TLC and Cornea Consultants. It wasn’t anything major, but there were some initial discrepancies in terms of the forms of payment that they’d accept and the total cost of the procedure. It was straightened out, and afterwards I learned that part of the problem is that the person who originally handled all of this stuff for the doctor’s office had suddenly passed away, so they were still trying to adjust to working without this person. Certainly understandable and an unfortunate loss. My experience with the procedure itself was nothing short of excellent. Dr. Schultze made himself very available before and after the procedure. I’d never had surgery before, and while PRK is not necessarily«major,» it’s kind of a big deal — they are my eyes, after all, and I was a little nervous about it. Dr. Schultze was great about answering questions and thoroughly explaining both the process and what to expect(sights, sounds, and smells). As a result of this, I found the procedure to be quick, painless, and comfortable — no surprises. Recovery went well with no adverse effects other than the occasional dry eye, which is(to my understanding) a fairly common occurrence in the few months following surgery. It’s also an easy fix, because a couple drops of Systane Ultra makes it all better. I had regular check-ups with the doctor to ensure everything was healing as expected. Like I said, this was possibly the best decision that I ever made and it turned out to be a lot less expensive than I had initially assumed it would be.
