I admit. Probably a great deal of 2 of these stars can be directly attributed to the sentimental side of my love for Fischer’s Newsroom. Having grown up in Albion and moved away as a kid, I have vivid memories of heading down with my Dad to pick up magazines and sweets and lottery tickets occasionally. I particularly loved the smell of the place… a heady combination of cigars and tobacco and sweets and magazines. I’d browse the comic rack and pick out something sugary to eat and every visit was magical. I particulalry remembering getting the Big League Chew gum with the baseball cards inside. Ah, reverie. I headed back here as an adult earlier this year, and with some hesitation I stopped in to visit. I generally loathe ruining childhood memories by confronting much loved things as an adult. It always comes with the realization that things weren’t what you thought. But as soon as I opened the door to Fischer’s the smell wafted over me again like no time had passed. The same comic book stand(though up to date of course), the same general layout. You know you’re in a small town when the guy across the counter asks if you’re so-and-so’s sister… and he’s right. Unique little newsrooms like this are dying out with the internet and the big shopping malls. But I, for one, hope this one never goes. It’s just too special to give up on.
