Dear Johndhi’s, or John-boni’s as I like to call it. You were a staple of my childhood dining experience. The food was bomb. The ambience was lovely and homey. I went last summer and experienced the patio. I loved your gazpacho and the barbecue was glorious. Why did you close? :(

I’ve been dining here for the better part of five years, so I think I can claim expertise. If you want BBQ, this place rivals anywhere in town. My personal opinion is that the sauce is absolutely king and the meats generally don’t quite match The Cube, but they’re close. The brisket is pretty fatty, the turkey thin-sliced and doubtful made in-house. Sausages are great, so’s the chicken. Who else does a great gazpacho? In the middle of the summer it’s a treat. Who can decide between fat fries and curly fries? Just tried the green chile stew and it rocks: spicy, beefy, potatoes, Homer says yum. Amazing beer selection. Staffing deserves its own paragraph: friendly, down-to-earth and worth every cent you over-tip. These guys know how to handle any situation, from special dietary requests to crayons and paper for the kiddos. They’re insanely responsive, working as a team to bring anything you ask almost instantaneously. Show your love on the bill, please. Finally, while the dining rooms are colorful and relaxed, if the weather favors the patio, GO! Get a big ol’ friggin’ goblet of iced tea or lemonade, try a Greek salad for a refreshing change. Let your kids check out the turtles swimming in the pond. Expect to be treated as family.

My favorite meal here is the 10oz sliced pork plate with fat fries and the vegetable gazpacho with one of their giant iced teas. The BBQ sauce has just the right amount of spicy twang for New Mexico or for a visitor from the south.(where folks take pride in their barbecue). The ambience is perfect – an old house with a shady barbecue garden. The servers take pride in their unabashed friendliness. This place truly values their customers with their friendliness, wide variety and reasonable prices. I always feel like I’m part of the family.

Johndi’s is very good! I was surprised, but a dolmas appetizer was almost better than the BBQ! That’s not a knock on the bbq, which was very good — but the dolmas were out of this world! A little more expensive than most BBQ places, but not bad. Worth a trip or two!

Formerly Geezamboni’s. A nice place for lunch or dinner in the north valley(only open during typical lunch and dinner hours). Tasty barbeque is smoked on site and comes with lots of smoky sauce. The greek food is also decent. The 5-star experience goes like this: Stay cool with a ginormous glass of iced tea under the enclosed patio on a perfect New Mexico summer day. Use an extra napkin to wipe the barbeque sauce off your face and take your sweet time to finish the curly fries. Release a sigh of contentment when the bill arrives accompanied by happy-face suckers.
