We were here 2 nights with a tour group. We had been promised a view of the river and the Boldt Castle, and when we arrived the rooms we were given did NOT have a view of either of these but of the marina — with a big tour boat right outside our balcony. Also, our travel company said that there were views of the islands, river, and Boldt castle from the resort. This was only true if your room was in the Main Channel section, as far as we could tell. We were NOT able to be moved into this area! We agreed that this was our tour company’s fault and probably not that of the«resort» hotel. Megan at the front desk was very helpful. Her manager Chuck was not, and had an attitude when we asked about being on a waiting list for a Main Channel 2 bed room in case one came open. There were NOVIEWS of the river, islands, or Boldt Castle from the«resort», No one at the hotel told us about a hidden gazebo in front of one of the hotel buildings that did have a view. The«resort» brochure states that there are views of river traffic, but we could not find a place to see these views, except near the gazebo that was very hard to find and on somewhat dangerous ground(no railings — you could fall right into the river). We found it the second day, AFTER we had missed the first night’s sunset, which we really wanted to see. There were no maps of the area or businesses in the rooms or the office. Megan got a map out of her car and made us a copy, but the map was not complete and did not show the nice park on Casino Island that we discovered on our own the second day to watch the river and the sunset. We had to walk awhile in the dark to get back. The restaurant next door was closed and gated so we could not see anything from there. It would have been nice if it was open — we would have eaten there for sure! The room itself was OK.

Found this spot thru Unilocal.THANKYOU Unilocalers for the honest, detailed descriptions! Like other reviewers said, this really is THE perfect location! Older looking rooms, yes, but are you really traveling to the 1000 Islands to sit in your room? The rooms are clean when you arrive and cleaned and refreshed daily unless you request otherwise. We traveled the last weekend they were open so the pool had already been closed for the season. The place was still sold out! Our balcony overlooked the water(I believe every room does) and stared right at Heart Island. We saw beautiful homes, huge tankers come thru and gorgeous sunsets. We were there in October so our view was colorful trees and blue skies. It was cold out but we took a blanket from one of the beds and laid over us while sitting outside admiring Mother Nature’s perfection. If I ever go back to 1000 Islands(not sure we will because there’s not much to do there), I will stay here again… won’t even look at another place.

My wife and I were looking for a place to stay in the Alexandria Bay that would give us the best Thousand Islands experience. Searching online, it was difficult to see the difference between the different resorts. We picked Capt Thomson’s Resort based partially on reviews, but largely on their location on the St. Lawrence River. The hotel has three wings, each offering different views. We stayed in the Main Channel wing and I would highly recommend the same to anyone wishing to stay here. You wake up and go to bed with spectacular views of Boldt castle. I’m convinced that there are not any better views of the castle at other lodging options. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived a little early, but they still let us check in. The cleaners always greeted you with a smile while passing by. During our stay, I found myself needing to print/sign/fax documents for work, and the workers at the front desk were quick to help me finish my business and get on with a relaxing vacation. We found the facilities to be clean. It seems most of the options in Alex Bay are motel style«resorts» and this is no different. The private balcony with a beautiful view is what distinguishes this place. They are also located immediately adjacent to Uncle Sam’s Boat Tours. You can even find deals that bundle boat tours together with your hotel stay. They offer free wi-fi. The pools were clean and the water felt warm(we didn’t swim). At first glance it appears as they had a hot-tub, but it’s just a kiddie pool. Overall, I was very pleased with our stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Alex Bay. I would definitely stay here again!

Capt Thomson’s is only a «resort» if you look at it that way. In reality, it’s a motel. I knew this when I booked it, but their name should really probably end with, say, «Motel» or «Lodge by the River.» Their best feature? Those wonderful private balconies that back right up to the channel/harbor. If you choose the«Main Channel» rooms, you could NOT ask for a better vaca-view. You get the Boldt Castle. You get the ships that go by. You get the birds and the nature and the islands and the most lovely sunsets. Man. It’s just so relaxing and peaceful. Minus the mosquitoes. Those little tool-bags can go fall down a massive abyss together. Yuck. Don’t forget the insect repellent! As for the actual rooms: they are motel rooms. Don’t expect anything more and you won’t be disappointed. They’re perfectly fine. Aside from the mosquito massacre we performed on the ceiling(may you all rest in mosquito-heaven peace), they were clean. I usually pocket the little shampoos and conditioners from hotels, but I didn’t this time because they weren’t that great. The beds were fine, but didn’t seem to have been updated any time recently. Capt Thomson’s most definitely has the prime real estate in Alexandria Bay. They’re right next to Uncle Sam’s Boat Tours. You should stay here if you want to take a boat tour. And you want to take a boat tour. So you probably want to stay here. That was our rationale, at least. Plus, Alex Bay has lots of gift shops nearby, too. Make sure to also check out the wine trail! To sum up: If you’re headed to the 1,000 Islands, want to take a boat tour of the 1,000 Islands, and want a decent, clean place to stay for a good price: this is a good option — at least from what I experienced during my June ’14 visit.

Staff was friendly and accomodating. The hotel is a little dated, but then again has some of the best views… so I was willing to put up with the fact that it looks like a motel from the 70’s. We had a room on the main channel, which was perfect. We were able to sit out on our deck and watch the sunset over Boldt Castle, which was really nice. Also — watching the boats and ships go by was pretty neat too. It wasn’t very expensive either, so that was a plus. Wish we could have stayed longer.
