Burke & Herbert Bank & Trust

When I set up my account the service was GREAT. I opened an account with a Banker named Hiwot. But the day I closed my account the manager was very mean and nasty Christina. Other times the tellers were lukewarm friendly. In addition there are not enough Branches from my point of view. But if you live in Northern VA it OK

I switched to Burke and Herbert a few years ago after repeatedly feeling abused by my national bank. When I came in to the Telegraph Road branch I knew immediately that I’d made the right decision. I felt welcomed by the branch manager and now he remembers me every time I go in. The tellers are also warm and welcoming. I’ve even had good experiences when I’ve been to other branches where they don’t know me. I love seeing the advertisements for B&H on the buses and around Alexandria!

B & H has progressively gotten worse and worse. We have been using them for many years and the standard operating procedure of their loan Dept is to not answer phones, return messages or emails. They, (after sending notice to renew) refuse to address why I was turned down. They deny credit not based on your credit score or your ability to pay back the loan, so, be very careful in dealing with them. They do not address concerns of the customer. Make sure not to ask who they are sharing your financial info with. Take your money and business elsewhere, you will be treated better by a bank who cares about customer service.

I started banking with them when my parents set up an account for me when I was 8 years old. As an adult, I have a trust fund, foreign trusts, and 3 other domestic accounts. I work in higher education and I work for foreign affairs. I take my money very seriously. This bank has been nothing but a pain. I was a victim of identity theft and had over $ 13,575 stolen from me over 4 transcations. Rather than the bank investigating, they immediately responded to my claim saying, «We understand you are upset, but we cannot do anything, how can we get our money?»
Unacceptable!
In addition, they are years behind online, you have to do EVERYTHING at a branch (I work and travel 75% of the time). Most of their employees barely speak English.
I can go on and on. I recently just closed my account and I wish them the best. However, if you are considering this bank, grab your money and run far away. It is safer under your matress than in this establishment!

Great bank! I have been banking with them for 35 years and never had any issues. If you like to bounce checks this is not the bank for you. Yes they are cautious they have asked for my id on occasion which I gladly show it is for everyone’s protection. If you are a customer in good standing with money in your accounts you can get any kind of loan with no problem.

I was very happy with Burke and Herbert until a change in my husband’s work meant that we went from direct deposit to depositing checks. Every single paycheck was held 5 days — and the staff was clueless about when checks would clear, when I would call customer service about when the funds would be available I was told different things by different people and those I spoke to were sullen and rude. I’m going back to Wells Fargo, it may be a giant corporate monster but at least its functional and understands customer service.

This is the best bank ever! I’ve never had a bank be so helpful and friendly. I actually look forward to banking now.

This is the worst bank with which I have ever attempted to do business. And I belong to a credit union that doesn’t accept Master Card! We opened an account here about a year and a half ago for several reasons. We wanted a brick and mortar bank with Saturday hours. We needed a joint account to start planning our wedding, which, thankfully is all we used it for. It was close to our house.
Dear USAA — I am so, so sorry we ever strayed. We won’t do it again. We’ve learned. Oh, how we’ve learned.
It has been a nightmare ever since and we will be using this Saturday’s hours to close our account. From mystery fees to holding deposits for a ridiculously long time (*after* the funds were removed from the check writer’s account), I can’t find a single good thing to say about this bank.
— They routinely, and without warning, ‘hold’ deposits for as long as the law will allow them, even when they very clearly already have the funds from the other person’s bank. This happened time and time again with the same check writer for amounts of all sizes. It even happened with wire transfers. The reason ‘having a little money in savings’ didn’t work to get these funds released for us was because the checks were for amounts around 10k and our savings accounts were with other, more reliable institutions.
— Mystery fees! So many mystery fees. I just demanded a print out of all transactions on our account over the last 90 days and there was a random 25 $ withdrawl that showed up several times that no one at this branch could explain — this *after* we stopped using the account about four months ago.
— B&H is run by Luddites. Almost nothing can be done online and that which can be done online is extremely poorly laid out.
— Clueless staff. Almost every single time we have stopped in to straighten something out, they’ve had to call HQ to attempt to straight it out and it took at least 30mn.
— Rude personal banker service lady at desk to the left. She’s often on the phone making loud personal calls and her habit of condescendingly referring to people as ‘honey’ as she insults them isn’t winning them new business. I will not miss her snotty attitude. I suspect those writing reviews saying how sweet she is are those exact people she was on the phone to instead of helping us!
Today I went in to try to close our account. The teller didn’t know how to do this. He also couldn’t explain the last three charges/​fees on my account. He tried to get his manager, but the manager was busy.
So the teller picked up a B&H pen, looking at it to call the main B&H number. He had been on hold a good three minutes when I gave up and walked out. I’ll come back on a Saturday — when I have 90mn to devote to a simple transaction I should be able to complete online.
I need a kickboxing class after every visit to this incompetent bank branch. Grrr!
