After looking for a good place to go regularly to get a good manicure in Del Ray, I found Jegal Hair Salon and now I’m extremely happy! They work by appointment and I was there on time and they were already waiting for me. Everybody in the hair salon is super friendly! I had my mani/pedi with Gladys and I’m very satisfied with her job. Very nice staff, everything is super clean and they have a new makeup artist too! They all look very professional and it looks like they know what they’re doing. I’m coming back and I recommend this place to all of you!

The salon is located in a townhouse so it’s hard to find. The clients are all African-American women and then some men getting haircuts. Glory was very nice but I just wasn’t happy with the service there. I made an appointment and she is triple booked. What’s the point of making an appointment? I went on a weekday and I had somewhere else to go afterwards. Glory hadn’t even touched my hair but wanted to know if I wanted a relaxer touchup(when she has never given me a relaxer before). I said no because I just put a relaxer in the week before! Don’t ask me if I want additional services to pad your pocket when clearly you don’t have the time with so many other clients waiting for you. I was charged $ 69 + tip for a wash and style yet the curls were gone the next day. I’ve paid way less than that at 3 black salons in DC and had the curls last for days.

As a biracial(black/white) woman, finding a good hair salon when you’re new to town is always a challenge. Luckily, I received a recommendation from a coworker to try out Jegal. A woman from El Salvador, Glory, runs this salon that caters to men and women. The staff is bilingual speaking both English and Spanish. Judging from the clientele I observed during my visits, this salon is definitely popular among women with ethnic hair, which is why I felt pretty confident about putting my hair in their hands. Up until May of this year, I visited the salon to receive relaxers(I’ve since decided to go natural, which is why this review is based on past experiences). Glory was very good at applying the relaxer and very attentive as to when my scalp was ready to have it rinsed out. I have very fragile hair at the edge of my scalp, so she was mindful to not leave the chemicals in too long around those areas. Glory’s staff would take care of the rinsing and blow-drying and I’d return to her for the trim(included with relaxer price) and final styling. Unfortunately, the salon can get pretty packed on Saturdays, which was the only day of the week I could go for a 1.5+ hour treatment, so my appointments sometimes ran longer than they normally would have on, say, a weekday. Nonetheless, there are plenty of reading materials to pass the time and Glory is very good at letting you know where you are in the queue. Due to their location, I haven’t returned since I decided to go natural, but I will likely go back for a cut/style if I’m in the area. I found a salon closer to me in Arlington for these basic services, but I would go back in a heartbeat if I plan on being around Foggy Bottom some random Saturday :-) It’s worth mentioning that I did try the waxing they offer at Jegal, and I wasn’t too impressed with the service. The cloths they used for removing the wax weren’t good at all or my waxer(forget her name) was just not very skilled. In any case, I’d recommend hopping across the street to Ibiza Day Spa & Salon for your hair removal needs.
