Gary is honest, capable, and stands by his work. He had numerous opportunities to upsell me but continually suggested options that meant less profit for him in the short-term. And when there are problems, he will do whatever it takes to fix them. He’s a standup guy. He also answers the phone almost every time you call, which is refreshing. And he truly enjoys explaining how things work and different approaches to problems. Fun guy to talk to. For a while I was frustrated with a couple of persistent gremlins in my car, but Gary finally got it sorted out.(One was due to a manufacturer’s defect in a particular part.) One thing I would suggest to him(and have) is that he add vehicle mileage to the customer invoice; it helps later on for resale. Gary is a BMW nut(in a good way) and has owned several BMWs and raced others. Parking is easy at his shop, and it’s at a convenient location within an easy walk of the Metro and near Van Dorn and 395. The labor rate is $ 109/hour(plus shop supplies) – which seems to be about average for independent BMW shops. Full retail but worth it for an honest mechanic. Be sure to tell him if you want BMW-brand parts only, because he may choose a different OEM manufacturer for some things if you don’t specify.

You know how you just want to have a doctor that you can talk to and trust? That is how I feel about Gary and Martin Motorsports. I know my way around my car and have done plenty of work on it in the past; I just don’t have room now to work on it myself… so I know when someone is trying to sell me something I don’t need. In my dealings with them, they have been nothing but honest… even counseling me to a much cheaper solution instead of trying the very expensive repair that I thought I would need. The thing I like most is that they focus on keeping cars running not just fixing what is broken. If you have a BMW in the DC area, I cannot recommend Martin Motorsports more highly.
