I just went to the Christmas sale at the Clay Queen on Sunday. What a wonderful store. The store is lovely and her pottery is amazing — so creative and artistic! She also has a corner of the store that is devoted to interesting and and attractive jewelry and another corner devoted to unusual antiques. I will be going back for more fun and unusual gifts.

The Clay Queen is an extremely gifted teacher and potter. Renee makes sure to give her new students lots of one-on-one attention while nurturing the creativity of her more advanced students. Most students walk out of their first class having thrown a pot! In addition to lessons, she has a wonderful selection of her own hand-thrown pottery. Her blue flower pattern(known as FBF) is a classic. The best part is that all of her pottery is utilitarian, not decorative. Don’t limit buying local to just your food! Support your local craftsperson!

Working with clay and learning to throw on the wheel should be on everyone’s bucket list. It was on my list and that was many years ago. Where else can you go to indulge in your childhood passion for making mud pies and at the same time create your own unique art and functional pottery pieces. You will receive individual attention and create a dish during your first lesson. If you can’t take lesson, but need some beautiful pottery for Mother’s Day or a wedding gift, then The Clay Queen Pottery is the place for you.

Have been spending one day a week at this pottery class/studio since July and find it fun and relaxing(albeit hard work). Renee, the instructor, is an experienced and gifted potter who teaches by demonstrating and literally hands-on! The people in the classes are nice and supportive and fun to be with. It’s a great way to spend an evening or a Wednesday afternoon! You work on a wheel and glaze you own pots — the teacher bakes them in her kiln. Not sure what the current price is but it is a 10 week cycle for just over $ 300, including materials and tools.

If you are looking for something different, something to relax from the daily grind I think this is a wonderful way to learn an art at the same time. Just getting my hands dirty and ’ playing around’ with this wonderful medium takes me back to my carefree childhood, away from the current mad mess. well worth the 350 you plonk for the eight classes. Makes for a great gift too.
