You need to really like Italian seasoning and au jus to go to this place, they use plenty of both.

Very nice family owned operation. Good way to support local businesses. It was well prepared and portions were large. I would recommend.

I’ve been in here a few times as an alternative to Subway during lunch(whenever I’m in that area) and, well, it’s alright. A lot of people do make this sound very overhyped, and having been there myself there’s really not much to S&S. It’s simply a small sandwich joint connected to Norb’s Tavern near upper Alton. I did have the Pig on the Wing, and something Italian-like(don’t remember!) and it wasn’t bad nor was it that good either. They have bottled sodies and chips just like any other sandwich place. If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic they’ve got 80s arcade games. I do like how they make the sandwich right in front of you, as in cooking and toasting it. There were a couple times I did not see the cook wear gloves, plus I was kind of grossed out by the sauces they put in some of the sandwiches. I don’t know the best way to put it, but having the sandwich wrapped in a very damp paper-wrap was kind of disgusting(like it was grease or if they od’d on the sauce). Hey I’m not hard to please. Again I’m not saying this place is bad. Give it a shot, especially if I’m being outnumbered.

This is definitely not Subway and that’s a good thing. It’s a bit pricey but definitely worth it. The sandwiches are huge and always use the freshest ingredients. I’ve had the Pig on a wing, the Ruben and the Italian and all have been well worth it.

I read the reviews and was impressive especially since me and my sister love Rubens. I give thanks to to Tina S, Steven B and Eboni H. comments as they were useful. However the most useful review was the negative review by Barry T. He is right, in my case i was virtually ignored for a couple of minutes and my order was taken without eye contact. Let me say this, some of the best sandwich shops I have been in operate this way, so my feelings were not hurt! The sandwich was prepared quickly and was of ample size. The price you couldn’t beat. I brought my sandwich home and it still had plenty of heat to it! The taste easily exemplified it as one of the best Rubens I’ve tasted. So please don’t be miffed by a lack of attention and miss out on a good sandwich. I can’t wait to go back and I live in Florissant!

Great sandwiches; every one of our four person party was highly satisfied and would come again. Reuben was great, fast, friendly, efficient service during the lunch hour. We are grateful Unilocal helped us find this gem.

Huge portions, each sandwich is easily 2 meals. Ordered the Betty, bacon was thick and crisp. Mayo delicious and the bread awesome. Will be back again. I wish they had more chip options but really with the size of the sandwich, skip the chips.

Is this the Alton way of doing things? I stood at the counter for several minutes while 2 men were there making sandwiches. They literally didn’t even acknowledge my existence! Waited a few more minutes thinking surely they would come take my order. Tick toc tick toc phone rings. Guy picks up the phone and takes the order, writes it down hangs up and gets back to work still no hello even. I wait 30 more seconds counting in my head and walk out. Worse service ever would never go back.

S and S sandwich is the best sandwich shop in the World!!! I have been going here for about three years now(shortly after they opened). Scott and Steve are very friendly, and make the best damn sandwiches you will ever eat. The Pig-on-A-Wing is generally considered their house specialty, but you cannot go wrong with any of them, especially the Reuben or Rachel, and their Chicken Sandwich(a very moist breast of chicken) is exceptional. The only sandwich that I do not care for as much is the Italian, but that is a function of taste, as many people really like that style of Italian meat, just not me. Prices are fair, and the portions are generous. Always go with the daily special if you get the chance(they usually sell out early). Is located next to Norbs Tavern.

Love, love this place the best Rueben Sandwich hands down! Very reasonable prices, drink, chips and homemade Rueben only around $ 10!!! This is truly one of Alton’s hidden gems!

Greasy, sloppy, and good. Probably the best place to get a sandwich in Alton/Godfrey. Admittedly that’s not saying much, and the environs of the restaurant itself are nothing to write home about, but it’s still worth checking out. I’m from Alton and somehow I’d never actually been here until my last visit around Christmas.

Their Reuben is truly Best of The Best. It is, Corned Beef with Kraut, 1000 Island Dressing, Swiss Cheese, Grilled and Served on Marble Rye Bread. It is huge, it is so big that I only ate half of my sandwich and took the remaining half home for dinner. I may have had the same thing for lunch and dinner that day, but it is was totally amazing. It is a small sandwich shop, with the ambiance of a dive bar. It is dark, has a mixture of hightop tables and video games. In addition to the sandwiches, they offer a variety of chips and bottled soda. I was here mid afternoon and the place still had at least a dozen folks enjoying a late lunch. The lone man working was outgoing and very personable. Why anyone would choose Subway or Jimmy John’s over S&S is beyond me. We shop local, now is the time to eat local as well. I can’t wait to go back and try their Pastrami and Pig on Wing. Even if I am not hungry, I will stop and get a sandwich to go and enjoy it later.

Great tasting, huge sandwiches made fresh for you. Superior products go into the sandwiches and no one could be hungry after eating one of these delights. The Pig on a Wing is a carnivore’s delight. The Veggie is great, and the pastrami they use is the best I’ve had outside of New York. The restaurant is a hodge podge of furniture and video games, so don’t come for the décor. Yes, it is more«expensive» than Subway or Jimmy John’s, but you get what you pay for in the flavor of the food. The location is easy to miss, but it’s worth finding S&S for a great and filling sandwich.(The venue is a small storefront between Norb’s Tavern and a barber shop on the north end of State Street).

I am not really a sandwich person, but this was the best sandwich I have eaten thus far in my life. This place is on the main street in Godfrey, it is hard to spot the writing on the door. It is a little dark but tons of sitting in the place. I was unsure as to which sandwich to order, I knew that I wanted turkey and bacon. The man asked if I wanted a hot or cold sandwich, hmm okay I wanted hot. He told me that I wanted the Pig on a Wing. This was served on Italian bread, with swiss and American cheese. It was piled high with turkey, ham and bacon added bonus of tomato and coleslaw. This was served with a dill pickle. No fountain soda, only bottle soda in the fridge. Chips in individual bags for additional purchase. My lunch was almost $ 12. but so worth it.

I gotta give props to these guys for their huge sandwiches. You won’t leave hungry, and you can always take the other half of a sandwich to go if you get full. Their portions put Subway, Quizno’s, and Jimmy John’s to shame, and their prices are the only thing comparable to these corporate machine-like sandwich factories. Their signature sandwich, which is cleverly named the«Pig on Wing,» is a masterpiece of turkey, ham, and bacon that will give any sandwich junkie the shakes if you enter withdrawal. I also like the Italian, which again, is gianormous. They recommend it hot, but I like it cold. But the best part about S&S, in my humble opinion of course, is creating your own masterpiece. They have Capicolla and Pastrami, which can set off a regular turkey sandwich like dynamite, or stand alone for full flavor. They also have wide variety of breads, sauces, and cheese to compliment any meat, and they will make your sandwich hot or cold. My favorite sauces are: the red pepper mayo, and the roasted garlic mayo. Favorite breads: sliced white or marble rye. Favorite cheeses: pepper jack or cheddar. Did I mention they serve local H&B bacon? As the owner’s facebook post once said, «When people have the option to add bacon and they don’t, I just don’t understand.» Two dings about this place: they don’t have fountain drinks(no free refills), and as previously mentioned, the ventilation is poor. However, I’m willing to overlook these flaws in favor of flavor and a quality sandwich that doesn’t come from a corporate chain. Bottom line, this place is one of the best lunch spots in Alton. Give them a shot, and I guarantee you will become a repeat customer.
