One of the best new little wineries in Amador County is Uphill Vineyards, whose lovely(and airconditioned) tasting room is located in Amador City. Ira and Beth Rosenthal offer a selection of wonderful wines. There is a delicious Pinot Grigio, an award-winning(double-gold medal at the 2015 California State Fair) Rosato di Primitivo,(a dry and crisp Primitivo rose), a fruity Primitivo, one of the best foothill Cabernet Sauvignons I’ve tasted, and an elegant Tempranillo. There’s also a delicious Black Muscat dessert wine. All the wines are made from grapes frown in their vineyard in Fiddletown, Amador County, except for the Pinot Grigio, whose grapes come from Calaveras County, and the Black Muscat, which is made from grapes from another vineyard in Fiddletown. There’s no tasting fee, and the wines are very reasonably priced, at between $ 20-$ 28 a bottle. They’re open on Saturday and Sunday, and Ira and Beth are delightful hosts. This has got to be a must-stop on your next visit to Amador County.

They may call themselves Uphill Vineyards, but their award-winning wines and laid-back tasting atmosphere will have you feeling like you’re coasting downhill with maximum enjoyment and minimal effort. It’s truly exciting to see such a quality establishment pop up smack dab in the middle of quaint downtown Amador City. With so many great wineries in the region, what makes Uphill stand out? The answer is simple: a quality product. Each variety, from their aromatic, fruity Tempranillo(2014 Amador County Fair Gold Medal and Best of Class) to their crisp and dry 2014 Rosato di Primitivo(2015 California State Fair Double Gold Medal) is a standout example of the craft. Owners Beth and Ira are beyond accommodating and clearly relay a passion for the art of winemaking. We left with two bottles and a commitment to return for more in the near future. Historic Amador City is worth a visit for so many reasons. I would put Uphill Vineyards near the top of the list.

Friendly relaxing environment. Fantastic wine the Rosato Di Primitivo 2014 is incredible. The owners are just great people, we enjoyed tasting their wines and later on we came back for the dancing in the streets event and sat out on the deck enjoying great wines and great local people. I highly recommend their wines and the locals.
