The combination of Bavarian tradition with Iowa Fall charm yields the marvelous yearly get together that is Oktoberfest! The folks here in Amana do it up right. Plenty of family friendly activities to peruse whilst walking down main street, along with all the liquid courage you’re in the mood for. Among the other pleasantries of Oktoberfest in Iowa, the one we appreciate the most is that the folks here consume respectfully. It’s rare to see someone passed out in a neighbors yard following Oktoberfest, but not uncommon to see people chatting and having a good time over some delicious beer soaked brats! Each restaurant sells their version of the brats, others bring along burgers, while others keep it real with potato cakes(Love me some fancy hashbrowns!). The beer is obviously the highlight of the occasion and the folks at the end of the road — Millstream — do it up right! The Octoberfest here is seriously good, even for those who don’t prefer the fall beverage of choice. The specialty beers the serve up in Fall compliment the October brew in ways you must taste to describe. The Great pumpkin stout of 2012 will go down as legendary(at least in my book) — similar to last years Dark night Belgian Rye. The festivities start on Friday evening generally, but Saturday, the parade truly kicks things off. You’ll also notice, that Oktoberfest brings out more leather pants than and 80’s reunion. Apparently Germans wear a lot of leather shorts along with the delightful hats(AKA German Alpine Hat — Hearts for wikipedia). Whether a brat connoisseur, a beer snob or just looking for something a little out of the ordinary, Oktoberfest in Amana is always worth hitting up — It truly makes you wish October came at least twice a year!
