Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society

This place is MISERABLE. It needs to shut down and reopen with new staff and regulations. The place is understaffed with seemingly apathetic people or maybe they just seem that way b/​c they are overworked.
The cages where the dogs are kept are unorganized and FILTHY. There is literally poop everywhere you look.
My friend who got her dog there had the worst experience any first-​time dog owner could have…
She went to look at the pups and fell in love with one little baby that she quickly adopted. Even though the dog had been there 9 days already, they apparently had to hold her for another week or so, because they hadn’t done the vet checkup (seems a little late, no?)
She went every single day to visit her pup.
Anyway, she finally got to take her home and right away she discovered ticks (which the humane shelter vet didn’t). Ok, fine. It happens. Then she started noticing this terrible cough.
Already long story short, it turns out her dog had distemper and the vet hospital said that they had already been putting down a lot of dogs at the shelter for it (which they failed to mention). Eventually, the disease reached the neurological state and after 3 weeks of owning her first dog, she had to put her down.
I can’t even tell you how heartbroken and miserable my friend is at the loss of her puppy. There needs to be a major change at this place… it’s a giant mess with irresponsible people.
