Just a wretched place if you’re an animal. I’m not a PETA hugger by any means but there is such a thing as standards. Parrots that have ripped out their own feathers to leave bleeding wounds does not meet them.

One of the most abusive, disgusting pet stores I’ve ever stepped foot in. It is painfully obvious the owners don’t do their research on what animals prefer/​need when it comes to caging. The rats/​hamster area is INCREDIBLY overcrowded and the wire bars can easily lead an animal toward a broken foot. Not to mention how much feces they’re standing on. The rabbits are left out in the open for any child to mess with. The birds cages are filthy. The lizards cages are largely overcrowded. The animals all look completely miserable. Do not support this business.

I felt horriable for the animals. Especially the birds, being a passionate parrot owner myself. Dirty, very dusty. Animals did not look happy. Broke my heart.

Very over crowded, dirty, and poor treatment of the animals there. The store literally looks like a hoarders mess random of cages and tanks throughout the store. The fish tanks look like the haven’t been cleaned for a while and the birds, rats, and hamster cages are over crowded.

Gross. Overpriced. Lying employees. Dirty smelly store.
Normally I’m all about supporting small business but geez do they need some revamping and new owners.
I’m glad PetCo is going to suck all of their business away.
The employee couldn’t even tell me if the bag of cat litter was clumping or none.
And I wouldn’t go there for dog grooming. I worked in grooming with one of their former employees and that individual hits dogs.
UGH. Do NOT let anyone you know go here. Those animals in the bins in the middle? They’re not separated by gender and the chances of getting a pregnant female are high. They’re typically inbred too, which means they’ll die in half the time as one that has been breed responsibly. When they get a pregnant one that gives birth there, they take the mom out and give them some peace for birth and not more than the time it takes for the babies to open their eyes. This falls short of the necessary time spans for babies to get the nursing they need. This place is AWFUL and I wouldn’t wish even my worst enemy to get a pet from there. And honestly, don’t buy them just to rescue them as it just feeds the problem. It’s disgusting and I wish the USDA would quit licensing them.

I’ve been to the old location in Campustown and always though it wasn’t in the best facility since it was rundown. However, this new facility is spacious and organized. It conveniently is located around many apartment complexes, hy-​vee and other establishments.
I went there to look for a bunny and was pleased with what I saw. There are big rooms for birds, rodents, small animals, fish, reptiles, etc. Warning: the birds can get VERY loud. One parrot sounded like a screeching child, but that’s expected when you have so many birds in one area. I loved the section with the small animals. I was very impressed by the selection of rabbits when it came to breed, size, price, etc. They have bunnies with the droopy ears which are super ADORABLE. The fish selection is impressive as well. There are indoor ponds full of koi and pond fish for pond owners. I believe you can even buy fish food in the fish food dispenser for them! There is a pretty cool BIG snake by the entrance that visiting this pet shop is worth for.
Customer service here is great and the owner is very personable. He knows how to look out in the best interest of his customers and pets. Occasionally, there are used products such as cages displayed by the front door!

Walked in and it was very dirty/​cramped. Animals aren’t treated well. While looking around I came across some Ginnie pigs and the cage was open next to all the rabbits that are normally picked up. All of the other animals around you were able to touch. I saw the mother pig on top of the small baby and when it got up the baby was not moving or breathing. Assuming I could pick it up, I brought it to the front desk mainly concerned asking about it’s one eye being crusted shut and it twitching. It was also the runt of all of them so it looked small and malnourished. The person working up front said that people aren’t supposed to touch the babies, I immediately said sorry and that I didn’t see a sign saying we weren’t supposed to. His response was «I figured people would have common sense» and went on about how people have been touching them all day.
Once again I apologized and he remained rude. And I left as the guy up front began to clean up the poor things eye.
I couldn’t help but notice through out the whole store there were not signs up about how to behave around the animals or giving any reminders to respect them. Over by the birds you couldn’t tell what kind they were or if they had any names. There was a beautiful parrot there that people were talking to and possibly taunting (usually there is a sign at least by the parrots/​and most animals to remind people how to behave) this one didn’t have a name or species type. Or a sign in general just a very dirty cage.
Hint to owner/​or whatever– if you don’t want animals to be picked up when they have an open ceiling cage next to animals that are picked up commonly, put up a sign specifying what you want people to know. Instead of telling them they don’t have common sense. And keep in mind there are younger children who are not always supervised by an adult that specializes in animals who come into stores and people with special needs. Don’t insult your costumers when it is your fault for not putting up a sign that states not to touch certain animals. You want to talk about «common sense»? How about putting up some signs since you just sit around instead of walking and keeping an eye on things. 1star because that’s the only way to post this. They may have a variety of animals but they are not taken care of professionally, don’t support this business. Go to an animal shelter instead.
