I like the place. Nice upscale place in town. But I feel the curries are fresh one day & other days its not even worth paying $ 2. So this is what happened, I went on a dinner date & food was finger licking good. & the girl got impressed & I got lucky but next time I got watery yellow curry hardly any flavor meat under cooked it was thick & I had to chew chew & chew. Its always mixed feeling. I have tried their yellow curry(Only once it was good) Pananag curry Too thick portion is 8 – 12 pieces of chicken and that too not huge. The only best part is their desert GREENTEA ice cream. Awesome

The food is okay(I had their lunch special chicken entrée) but the prices are expensive(especially for a lunch special).

Would give it 3 ½ stars if it was possible only due to the dessert. For an entire I had a Thai curry that was just OK. Nothing amazing, the chicken in it was like Chinese buffet pieces of meat with little texture and less flavor. Also, just an OK sized portion. What put this dinner near the 4 mark was the dessert. We had the mango sticky rice. Perfect balance of warm, sweet sticky rice and the acidity of good quality mango. I could live off that stuff!!!

My husband and I had dinner at The Spice. Worst Thai food we have ever eaten! Couldn’t chew or swallow the calamari for starters. Entrees were uneatable. Don’t even want to give a 1 star.

The food is fantastic. I have tried quite a few things on the menu and they all have been delicious.

Food is fantastic! Have had the lemongrass chicken, yellow curry with chicken, steamed dumplings, and the chicken satay. They were all delicious, with the yellow curry with chicken being my favorite! The wait can be a little long but I think the food is worth it. It can get slightly noisy especially when there are larger groups.

The first thing I don’t like is they don’t have the hot spot soup, they only serve Tom Yum, Tom Kha and Poh Tak in the bowl. The most Asian people like eat Thai hot spot soup, don’t know why they don’t serve that way. The second thing they don’t have«papayas salad» it’s sad. The third is they have a lot of kinds of curries. It is not look like pure Thai restaurant.

This is one of our go-to restaurants in Iowa. The food & tea are authentic and spicy(as promised), jazz playing softly in the background, just the right amount of lighting, always clean, exceptionally friendly service. Worth the price.

I had the best Thai meal here that I’ve ever had and better than any I’ve had in Des Moines. The prices were absolutely on par with comparable places serving good quality food with a lovely ambiance. If you are gainfully employed with a regular full time income, you would think nothing of the prices. The bleetings on here about priciness must be coming from college kids. The service was also excellent. Started with a bowl of soup which was delicious. Then ginger chicken which I asked them to make with medium spiciness. It was superb. Had I known how wonderful it was, I’d have ordered another one to take home to have the next day. Portion sizes were large. Would drive from Des Moines just to come and eat here again.

I don’t know how people can give this place anything less than 5 stars. The most authentic Thai food I have found in Iowa.

Ugg where to start First I feel bad every time I do this kind of review. But if I am not honest, I hurting both the customer and the restaurant. The trusting customers who walks in expecting a wonderful meal for the high price they pay for it. But instead go home and end up in the bathroom for hours. The next the restaurant, for not understanding why they are not having as many customers as they use to. They will then continue serving sub-par food, and make some literally sick. Again I truly feel bad about this review. I hope that I will be able to change it for the better in the future.

I’ve had mixed experiences here but generally like The Spice. I had takeout a while ago, and it was Just. Not. Great. But my in-restaurant experience is always delicious and the staff — every one of them! — are really lovely. Their curries are my jam.

Returned to The Spice after not coming here for about a year for a nice evening out with my boyfriend. Previously, we were impressed with the quality and authenticity of the food(both of us coming from Chicago, we have been thoroughly exposed to good Thai food, and TRUSTME, this is nowhere near the quality you should receive for the price). It is clear that The Spice has lowered their standards; the salmon I received was clearly frozen and dry, and the duck that my SO ordered was reheated and so not-fresh that it spoiled the flavor of the entire curry and ended up in the toilet later that night Count me unimpressed with the changes in their food. Neither of us will be coming back.

Great food with exceptional service. We had Garlic Chicken and Drunken Noodles. Both were bursting with flavor. Highly recommended.

I suspect the relatively low review average for The Spice is only because half the population of Ames is cheap college students who will settle for lesser places in the city at half the cost and quality. The Spice is good thai food. High quality ingredients, great flavors, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. I’ve lived in Chicago for 3 years now, and my favorite dishes at The Spice are as good as any Thai food I’ve had in Chicago. Top picks(in order of preference): Cashew Chicken, Pad ka prow w/beef, Spice Pasta.

By far one of my favorite restaurants in Ames. I love spicy and this place does it right. I ordered a soup and the spicy peanut chicken. I must say my experience was great. Wonderful spicy food, good wine, and great service rounded out our dining experience at The Spice.

Good food and good service. Only gets four stars because it’s a bit pricy for what it is. If I’m going to pay more than $ 15 for some shrimp or scalps, I would expect something better than very tiny frozen 18−25/lb bits. However, since this is Iowa, it’s still pretty good for what you can get. I also hear from my Thai friends that it is pretty authentic… For Iowa. Good place to take a date.

The food was good Thai, but damn! It’s expensive! The food was expensive and then they nickled-and-dimed me for adding potatoes to my vegetarian yellow curry. Apps are small, drinks are small, and everything is a billion dollars. We used to go there for special occasions, but it just didn’t feel good enough to continue to pay so much for. Sucks because the food is good.

This is a really good restaurant. I wish there were more like this in Ames. The people are super-friendly and it has a nice atmosphere. But the food is really why it’s worth a return trip. Everything we’ve tried has been great off the menu, and they’re willing to modify your order to suit your tastes… spicier, different noodles, etc., they’ll do what it takes to make you happy.

I love Thai food, and I was delighted to learn that Ames has a couple Thai options. The Spice has become one of my favorite restaurants in town. It’s casual-classy, with a great lounge. The wine list is decent and the food has yet to disappoint — great flavors and perfect portion sizes. I can’t complain about anything here. The food, atmosphere, and service are wonderful. Be sure to use the rear(main) entrance, not the one on Main Street like I did on my first visit.
