The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College is a very nice, small art museum. There are a few separate wings housing different styles of art. There are many prints and some sculptures and pieces of furniture. The modern art wing was very interesting. When we entered the museum, there was a receptionist in the lobby, I walked passed with my umbrella and got into the museum before a guard asked me to leave my umbrella in the lobby. That was one of the only negatives of my experience, and the rest of the visit was very enjoyable. There are a lot of really interesting and beautiful pieces of art. An audio tour is available free of charge, to download to an iPod. The descriptions are pretty brief next to the paintings. The museum offers to lend visitors an iPod to listen to the tour. There were a lot of interesting pieces and the museum is open long hours and admission is free. We visited this museum and the Natural History Museum on Amherst College’s campus and combining the two made for a nice visit.
