What a great place! Well worth the drive from Cedar Rapids/Marion area. It’s also the only place you can get peanut butter and a fried egg on your burger. I always loved the option of substituting your side for almost any appetizer on the menu as well. The historical building makes for a great dining atmosphere and the décor is pleasing. When it comes to the food I was very impressed. Great menu options and amazing burger combinations. The bar downstairs also seemed to be a fun environment for a beer as well. The service was lacking at times but they were very very busy the day I dined so that being said they did a great job keeping up. Well worth the trip and the price. Check it out for yourself.

This place is easily worthy of five stars. They excelled in all respects. The building is constructed of native limestone. The interior is immaculately clean and warm. You will find the restrooms beautifully decorated and comfortable. There is a bar downstairs and an upstairs seating area. I had the all-you-can eat cod fry. Not only was it amazingly delicious, the price was very reasonable… actually, 20% less than the other area fish fry specials. and I liked this fish better. The coating on the thick, hand breaded cod pieces was tasty. The waffle fries were deliciously seasoned. The cole slaw was perfectly creamy and«zingy». The service was as terrific as the food! The server was warm, friendly, and sincere as well as attentive and prompt. I would highly recommend this restaurant to the general public. It’s one of the finest I’ve been to in years. They do a great job and earn all of the high ratings you see here.

We travel here regularly to get away from the Cedar Rapids wasteland of food absence. Worth the 20 minute drive anytime. I’ve had about everything on the menu and it is all fantastic. Great atmosphere too and great for kids. Love the basement bar seating area and the deck area.

Went here for the first time this week. Went with several of my friends and only one had been here before. It was a great time and I will be back soon. Décor: First of all the building is an old building constructed in part with the limestone that is mined locally. I was a little apprehensive at first, thinking, «cold, old and damp» — nope, not at all. The main floor was open and spacious. The open ceiling with duct work and such doesn’t impress me much. Downstairs is dim and reminded me of what I would see in a movie when they stop at an Inn. The steps down were wide, well-lite and easy to maneuver. Since it was a beautiful day, we went to the lower deck. The view of the river and the sounds of the water were perfect for wanting to relax. Bathroom: Ok, giving this it’s own spot because it was great! I don’t usually get overly excited by the biffy, but my oh my, this is nice. They have decorated this to make the most of the space. Plus, the choices make it feel much larger and brighter than it really is. It was also very clean! Drinks: Good selection. The water was good. Friend had a Wapsirita and it was strong! Menu: Very wide selection. We just shared several appetizers. The bucket of fried food was great and the corn nuggets were so good, I’d go back right now to eat them. Saw several food items going to another table. Portions looked good and I will look forward to trying something on the next visit. Prices: Very reasonable. Service: Young lady that waited on us did a great job. She was personable and gave us good suggestions. She also joked along with us as we made our selections. Pre-bussed table and kept my water filled. Go for the location, go for the food and drink, go for the great service, just go!

Our favorite place to go! Love the atmosphere and the best burgers around! Don’t forget to check out the fireplace downstairs or the deck on the Wapsi in the summer. Always a relaxed fun trip.

This is such a great little restaurant! It was the first time I had been there but the service was fantastic, the food was delicious and the overall atmosphere was great! I would love to come here in the summer to sit on the patio overlooking the river. I had the Jackhammer(fried pork tenderloin sandwich) and I was thoroughly impressed. It was cooked perfectly and their chips are amazing! The sweet potato fries with marshmellow dipping sauce are equally as good. The outside of the building is so cute and looks very rustic. Inside décor is of the same type — rustic and comforting. Overall, I would come back to the General Store when I’m back in town.

I don’t hand out 5-star reviews very often, so if I do, it’s for a place I reccomend. I like to travel out there from Cedar Rapids every few months and get a meal for a little trip out of town. It has a cool deck in the summer overlooking the Wapsipinicon River, and the inside is rugged and makes you feel like you are in the past — but in a good way! The ambiance is cool, and I have liked every thing I have ever eaten there. I would describe the food as a cross between a steakhouse and really good bar food. They have things like prime rib on Saturday night, and a great selection of fried bar goodness. Speaking of fried goodness, they have 2 different appetizer samplers, the bait bucket and the tackle box — served in a metal bait bucket or an actual tackle box!

Great food. Fast friendly service. Good beer selection and awesome atmosphere. Old miner style with old vintage styled beer fridge. Must stop by if traveling through Anamosa.

The atmosphere brings a lot of people to the old General Store. Even though my arteries harden when I look at the menu, I have to admit that the food at the General is ample and good, if a little slow in arriving. Favorites include the tenderloin and massive Dump Truck burger, not to mention the Tackle Box, a genuine tackle box filled with an assortment of deep fried, artery-hardening appetizers. Okay, I’m a vegetarian so I try to avoid this stuff, but it is tempting. The prices are not low for a country pub, but the atmosphere more than compensates. Lovingly maintained and restored exposed limestone walls and floors, high ceilings, and a large deck overlooking the Wapsipinicon River and Stone City bridge are just some of the highlights. The menu was recently expanded to include fish and chips, quesadillas, a few heavy items. Open mic night on Sunday evenings is an authentic free review of local talent, so get there early. I live in the village, so I am grateful to have the General Store nearby. Access may be interesting to say the least during the summer of 2012 due to road construction.
