Gallery Project

Visited here when they had their «Unhooked from Time» exhibition a few months ago. This was a great little exhibit I had a fun time walking around looking at. If you’re nearby Ann Arbor, I recommend checking out the Gallery Project.

Good god, has Ann Arbor needed a gallery like this. I’ve lived here for 6 years and still am amazed at how piddly and lacking the art scene is.
Fantastic, cutting edge shows. Thought-​provoking themes, wonderful space, art is always hung fantastically.
The owners are more than happy to walk with you through the show speaking on each piece. The openings are fun and well attended.
They live and die on donations. Please stop in and help fill the jar. We can’t afford to lose this gallery.

The Gallery Project definitely hosts some great local talent. My first experience with this gallery was pretty special. I was on a weird but charming sort-​of date with one of the artists who had an installation. He let me in after hours and we used hard hats with lights to go into the lower level and check out his work. It was really amazing.
I’ve been back a few times since, and they always have interesting contemporary art. The space is very clean and crisp — it’s to the point and doesn’t mess around. They call it a «gallery of ideas» and I feel that describes the collections they choose — deeply exploring culture and the individual. If I was going to show someone a contemporary art gallery in Ann Arbor, this is probably the first one I would go to. The space does a great job of exhibiting the art. The installations they have in the basement are always phenomenal.

This gallery doesn’t have a gift shop or a classroom, and it’s shoehorned into a long, narrow space on a side street.
But it specializes in edgy, contemporary art. You can tell when you walk in the door that these people mean business.
They do nine shows a year, and you shouldn’t miss even one of them if you can help it.
