I have to admit that I love libraries. I do not go to the Pittsfield Branch for the books or even the beautiful architecture of the building. I go here because of all of the entertaining free events. I have seen kangaroos, snakes, and other wild animals here and I have also learned how to make flowers out of ribbon. Additionally, there is a fun artsy ball shooter in the middle of library that brings out my inner child. WARNING: The one thing that is terrible about this library is the parking lot. It is small and on the weekend there are never any spaces available.

Nice place, modern design. Unfortunately there’s this really obnoxious contraption in the middle for little kids. They push a button and it launches a ball up into a funnel. It’s quite noisy and difficult to concentrate on reading/studying while kids are playing with that.

This branch is relatively new – opened in spring of 2006. It’s an interesting building designed by Luckenbach|Ziegelman Architects and meant to be a sustainable building that’s environmentally friendly to its site. It’s gorgeous with lots of natural light and an open feel. It’s been well-patronized since the day it opened, and has good collections of CDs, audiobooks, and DVDs.

The Pittsfield Township library is my favorite library in Ann Arbor. And unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of libraries in my time here. Its unique architecture is a pleasant escape from the big box-iness of the surrounding area. There is lots of natural light, and if you’re lucky you can get a study spot along the huge windows that overlook the surrounding wetlands. The library is quiet enough to get some serious studying done, but there are enough active children playing with the Bernoulli machine to entertain you when you need a break. The library actually deserves a 4.5, I only marked it down because the branch doesn’t actually house a very large collection of books. But you can easily get anything you need delivered from the main library or another branch.

The Pittsfield Branch is only two years old and it’s swank. Granite tops on the shelving; imported Italian glass lamps; leather furniture in the reading room. There are some great stuffed chairs right in front of the fireplace where you can put your feet up while you read a book. The nice thing about all the branches is that if the book(or other item) you want is in another building, you can have it brought to you at your local branch. Take advantage. The meeting space at the Pittsfield branch is available for rental. For more information, see the library’s main web page: . Disclaimer: I’m an employee of the Ann Arbor District Library. I’m slightly biased, so take my five-star review with a grain of salt.
