I made an appointment to get a shellac manicure here. When I walked in they had another appt that was running late and said it would be a moment so I decided to stay. When the appt took too long I had to let the receptionist know I couldn’t stay any longer since I would be late getting back to work. When they accepted the walk in that overlapped onto my time they should have called to say the appt had to be delayed or rescheduled. The salon later emailed me apologizing and offered me a free manicure. This was a very nice gesture. I like that they have a schedule that I can call in and squeeze in and that the women working their are very nice. This was my third time in so I’ll review again if I go so I can get a better feel.

Like Ann, my ‘highlights’ were barely noticeable. They didn’t take the time to figure out the color I wanted. They didn’t last a month. No phone call before my appt and no follow up. For $ 182, I almost disputed this with my credit card company. Ill never be back. In case you’re wondering why they will only take tips in a check or cash… It’s because they get so many charge-backs and disputes and they were tired of refunding tips too. I should have known better.

I saw Charly for a cut and partial highlights in June 2014. I’m 31 and have been highlighting my hair since my teens. In all those years, which included appointments with more than a few different stylists in two Midwest cities, Charly blew the others out of the water! The tones she chose and the placement of her foils — everything color-wise was flawless. My hair also came away shinier and fuller. The cut was fine — nothing I would rave about, but it got the job done. I am from AA but live out of town now. I only went to Salon XL because I was there for a weekend that coincided with when I needed new highlights. If I lived in AA, though, I must say I would not be a regular client, and the reason is simply cost. I recognize that they probably charge the going rate for someone with that level of expertise, but I have a young family and other priorities, and I simply cannot pay what they charge every 2 – 3 months. I wish I could, because I’d love to support this cute local business and get those wonderful highlights again!

Charlie is the best! I am incredibly picky when it comes to my haircuts and this has been the most consistent place each and every time. One drawback is that she charges $ 55 for a men’s haircut… it’s a little steep but I guess you have to pay the price for perfection.

Not only were the services I received over-priced but the partial high lights that were done were barely noticeable and left my hair feeling like straw. I spent way too much on the highlights plus another $ 40.00 for an expensive leave-in conditioner that was supposed to condition my hair so it would not dry out so much from coloring. Would not recommend this salon.

Shampoo was good but they completely messed up my blow dry. The stylist and j had some more discussion about it and i thought we were on the same page. I asked for a not structured, free form blow dry. They ended up using so much product that my hair looked processed and damaged. I would recommend going in there with a picture of what you want done.

I have been going to Salon XL since high school. When I left Ann Arbor to attend law school I always made time to come back for haircuts. Charlie is a genius. My mother is also a loyal client and our hair could not be any more different. My hair is half way down my back and I haven’t colored it in years. My mom has never let her hair grow past her chin and she has been coloring her hair for over thirty years. The only thing we have in common is the fact that we would never let anyone other than Charlie touch our hair. I highly recommend this salon to anyone that is as picky about his or her hair as me or anyone that is just looking for a great cut and/or color!

I’ve gone to just about every premium place to get my hair cut and Salon XL has provided the most consist ant positive experience of them all. When I say«experience» I’m referring to a few variables that just about everybody thinks about when they go to a salon: 1) wait time: none. I’ve never had to wait for an appointment. I’ve always walked into the door, and had my head under the sink in less than 30 seconds. Take THAT Salon 6 in Royal Oak! 2) Magazines: not a factor, since I don’t have to wait. I don’t need to worry about crappy magazines! NEXT. 3) Music: The only important thing you need to know is that you will never need to worry about closing your eyes and wondering if you’re in a night club. No blasting techno music or top 40 crap here folks. I hate it when salons try to create an atmosphere that presumes you want to feel like you’re getting ready to go party with Lindsay Lohan. 4) Conversation: I have yet to have an awkward moment while getting my hair cut, and this is coming from someone who feels awkward A LOT. I mean, I’m already out of my comfort zone at this super girly«salon» place, but I always enjoy talking to Shannon, Mellisa, Charlie, and everyone else on staff — that’s right, i remember their names, because they’re so cool. I wish they served food or coffee, because i don’t always need a hair cut, but i want to keep talking to these wonderful people. Can YOU name a salon where you don’t worry about your stylist dropping the ball in the conversation or plainly defaulting to banal conversation topics? I can’t, but i don’t worry about that with Salon XL. 5) Location: near a parking structure, and near the best restaurants in Ann Arbor. I can show off my awesome haircut to a high foot traffic area.

I used to go to Salon 6 in Royal Oak for my haircuts, after finding Salon XL my long drives are over. Good Conversation. Good People. Good Haircuts.

I’ve been going to Salon XL for several years. Charlie does my color and cut, and she does a wonderful job. I love my color, it’s natural looking, doesn’t get brassy, and what I like a lot– it’s not a crazy, noisy salon. My cuts look good, right up to the time I need a new one. People often tell my how great my haircut it! I also love the Oribe products-especially Volumista! I LOVE it, can’t live without it. I think Salon XL is a real find in Ann Arbor. What more is there to say? Great place.

It took me a while(2 years) after moving here to find Salon XL, but I am so glad I did! The staff is friendly, I always feel welcome there, and my stylist Tracey is awesome!

As an advertising executive who regularly meets with the image-conscious elite, my hair *has* to look good. While I could easily have it done by the leading stylists in any of the major cities I regularly visit(and I have: New York, London, LA), Salon XL easily matches(surpasses) their quality for less than half the price. Charlie(the owner) has exclusively done my hair for the past 4 years, managing it from long and blond to a very flattering chin-length auburn. My hair takes less than 10 minutes to do at home with the Kerastasse products and not a week goes by without someone complimenting me on my tresses. I have 3 daughters, each of whom have very different hair types ranging from naturally stick-straight to Shirley Temple-curly and Brandi does an amazing job bringing out the best in each one of them. Brandi has given me manicures that have lasted longer than a week and she is the queen of the up-do for a special event. The atmosphere is relaxed and extremely service-oriented. It’s a pleasure visiting there and I am always delighted with the results. Salon XL is an Ann Arbor treasure.

Simply one of the best salons in the country. I moved to West Hollywood a year ago and I am still struggling to find a salon that has this much talent. Angel was my stylist for years and I miss her dearly. She is great with cuts and AMAZING with color. She also teaches and is very sweet. The other stylists are also great and I would be willing to try any of them. They also do great wedding parties. Seriously, A2 has so many stylists — but I think this salon is the best.

Salon XL is the best there is. I’ve traveled from New York, Chicago, and North Carolina to get my hair cut here. They are extremely knowledgeable about hair care, and I always look good afterwards. Charlie owns the place and is a card, and Brandy cuts my hair. It is quality all around.
