In case any of you wanted to know… «In 1972, Nejedly authored Senate Bill 25, to authorize the design and construction of the new Antioch Bridge in Antioch, CA, which replaced a vertical lift bridge that was constructed in 1926. After its completion, the new bridge was named the „Senator John A. Nejedly Bridge“ in his honor. In 1979, nearby land was acquired for the Antioch/Oakley Regional Shoreline with the support of Nejedly, and it was Nejedly’s suggestion that some of the old bridge’s pillars be used for what is now a fishing pier.» I remember this bridge being wooden and very rickety. I also remember my parents letting me pay the toll person handing them 50cents through the car window! Then $ 1…then $ 2 and so on. Now the toll is a crazy $ 5 dollars. I’d think the bridge was paid for by now. On the Sherman Island side there is no toll. And that’s where you used to be able to park your car then walk along the path under the bridge and up to the water at Mayberry Slough and put your poles in the water and fish. Not anymore.

I have been over this bridge countless times. Once I got into a fender bender right outside the toll plaza while heading onto the bridge and had to pull over. While exchanging information with the guy a pack of wild pit bulls started running on the bridge. The guy I just hit had a some woman with him and she said,“Oh, we should get them they’re going to get hurt.“ I looked at her and just shook my head and said,“You would be crazy to go after those dogs.” She didn’t understand why we shouldn’t save them. Hello its a pack of Pit Bulls from god knows where in Antioch!!! This bridge is narrow and scary but the view on the way back in to Antioch is really gorgeous on a clear day. You can see Mt. Diablo, all of Antioch and the Delta. At night when a plane is flying over while driving at the top its a crazy optical illusion because the plane looks like its right there, right above your head. Its an odd bridge and if your going towards Rio Vista its almost like a bridge to nowhere. I used to date a guy who lived in Dixon and that was the fastest way to get there from Brentwood. Still $ 5 for this bridge. Kind of expensive but whatever. I don’t go over this bridge for personal reasons anymore so technically I’m not paying for it. Or am I?
