When I was 12, I got a haircut. When I got in the car and looked at my haircut in the mirror, I cried. I have always had beautiful thick long hair, and I mean long: when I was 12, my hair was past the middle of my back, so you can imagine my horror when I looked in the mirror and saw the jagged lengths of a Beetle cut hanging around my oval-shaped face. So I cried all the way home. I cried some more when I got home. I didn’t stop for a long time, and I didn’t get a haircut again for a long time. All good things must come to an end, though, and my hair, which used to be a good thing, ended in nothing but split ends. I knew I needed a haircut but I had no idea where to go. Then my aunt, who lives in Chaffee, recommended that I try The Colour Barre out in Arcade. At first I laughed at the idea. My mom and 2 of her sisters recently took the recommendation of the third(the one in Chaffee) and started taking bi-monthly group outings to get their hair done. They would leave around 5PM on a Thursday night and not return home till 10PM or later. Obviously: Arcade is about a 45-minute drive from my Buffalo HQ. Needless to say I finally started going there with MY sister, and now I refuse to go anywhere else. Getting a haircut is an event. We leave the house at 7:30AM on a Saturday and fuel up for the drive with bagels and coffee from Dunkin. Our appointments last anywhere from 2 – 6 hours, depending on who is having what done(cut? color? wax?). But it’s totally worth it. Tanya, Monica, and Chrystie are all great stylists, but I won’t go to anyone except Chrystie.(I love her so much that when I was living in Indiana, I arranged weekend trips back to Buffalo, not to visit my family, but to get a haircut from Chrystie.) She understands my Lebanese hair and my crazy Italian eyebrows, and her work NEVER disappoints. I always walk out of The Colour Barre with a fresh, modern haircut(and color if I choose), perfect eyebrows, and no ‘stache to be seen. Plus the girls who work there are so fun; I would go there for the gossip, junk food, and coffee alone. Money is no object when it comes to your hair, but the price is worth a mention here. I have never paid more than $ 55.00 for the total package – cut, color, and wax. I think that price is beyond reasonable, and honestly I always walk away with a heavy wallet and an awesome sexy haircut, feeling like a straight up smooth criminal.
