Copperwood Tavern

All six of the friends I went to brunch with today enjoyed their food. I had the duck hash with poached eggs, another friend had the chicken and waffles, and another the french toast. All the food was well presented and delicious. I liked that the server offered to split our checks without even being asked. I’ll be back for sure!

Not impressed. My bf and I stopped in here only because they were one of the few places open before 10am for brunch, and we then realized we should have just waited. The service was pretty lack luster, and we sat with dirty dishes on this tiny 2 top for 20 minutes and they remained there until after we left…
The food. oh boy, the food… very disappointed, and the thing that had the most flavor was the ketchup.
We had the crabcakes eggs Benedict, the crabcakes had an interesting flavor. slightly sour like too much lemon. Then the scotch eggs. The sausage wrapped around the egg was clearly those over processed patties. And it still lacked flavor! The final item was the egg white omelette with spinach, mushroom, and gruyère… for a «light» option it was smothered in grease. Gruyère was also not the best cheese choice. I think it needs one that melts better, and has a more robust flavor.
Looking around we saw that the food others had ordered looked unimpressive as well.
Bummer.

Absolutely love this place for brunch. I have never been disappointed with a meal here. The shrimp and grits, short rib bennie are highlights of an excellent line-​up. Also, the french toast sticks are a must.
Dinner can get a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. My chicken was moist and delicious and the sides my group shared were all giant and flavorful.
The bar is stocked with an excellent selection of beers and the cocktails, particularly the bloody mary, are great.

We most recently enjoyed a Sunday brunch at Copperwood. The ambiance is pleasant with photos of a dog at each booth. It looks and feels more rustic than trendy.
Brunch was good with servings larger than one person should eat. I opted for the Tavern breakfast with poached eggs, English muffin, link sausage and breakfast potatoes. Most cooked perfectly with three poached eggs and way too many potatoes to eat. Sausage was dry but good flavor.
Dining companion ordered egg sandwich. Bread was fresh but only ate half of a very large sandwich and ate several of the small diced potato pieces. Two people could have easily split the sandwich.
Dishes for brunch are fairly expensive with more complex meals available rather than just pancakes or waffle without extras like cheese, whipped cream or fruit topping.
Ordering a la carte not really an option as preselected dishes are less expensive. Wasted quite a bit of food as a result with about half of three breakfast meals being consumed by three people. Total bill, less gratuity about $ 53.00 including coffee or tea for each person.
Service was good. We were not rushed despite a growing crowd on Sunday morning.

This place has a trendy vibe. The rustic bar & infused copper piping throughout the restaurant makes you get a feel that can only be described as a Hipster!
My wife and i took a seat at the bar area and the bar tender was quick to clean off the remaining food that was from the previous customer. At this point I had high hopes. However, it soon went down hill… FAST! There was no greeting, no «Hi welcome» it was straight up ‘What can I get you”.
We ordered 2 coffee’s and 2 waters. The both came pretty fast, but upon my first sip of the coffee I thought a mistake had been made and I ordered iced coffee, then I quickly came to my senses and realized that I hate iced coffee and that this was just coffee that had been sitting out way too long and had dropped dramatically in temperature. I’m not really one to complain, so I thought I would down the horrible coffee and when I was asked for a refill to request a little more heat.
The bartender then came back and took our order. I obviously opted for the eggs benedict, given my acquired taste and continuing search for the best eggs benedict around. Still no refill on the coffee…
After waiting a short while the food came was delivered by a separate guy. He politely asked if we needed any ketchup and we obliged. he then shouted at «Ivan», who was at the other end of the bar to find out where he had put the ketchup. The ketchup was found and we where on our way! Still no refill on the coffee…
I looked down at my plate and saw the eggs perfectly cooked. Although, the hollandaise sauce was basically non existent. The muffin was rock solid and the potatoes were ok. NOTE: There was no option for hash browns, which I feel is a must when putting eggs benny on the menu. Still no refill on the coffee…
I quickly finished my breakfast and enjoyed some convo with the wife before trying to get the attention of the bartender. I had now got to the point that I was pining for a «Hot» coffee. We waited and waited and nothing came. We decided that we would instead, stop by Starbucks on the way home.
Shortly after coming to this decision, the bartender finally came back and asked if we wanted anything else. We kindly asked for the check and he took the plates without saying anything and came back with the check. «There ya go»…no thank you, no come again. It was a simple drop and go. OK!
The damage (Bill) wasn’t too bad, so we quickly paid and we were officially on our way to Starbucks. If it was up to me I would not being going back, but my wife brought up a good point and stated that perhaps service would be better at a table next time. So, looks like we will be giving this place a second shot. Perhaps if they serve hot coffee and a bun that doesn’t chip my tooth I will edit my review. But, until then 2 stars it is.
The search for the perfect eggs benedict continues!

The food, bourbon, cocktails, and beer list are top notch; I have never been disappointed.
That is not why they are a 5 star for me. I put my dog down today. I am no stranger to loss, but this was the hardest thing I have ever had to actively decide to do in my life.
I have never had a single item comped on my bill (nor would I have any reason to; the service, food, and passion of the staff is why I go there).
Last night, I took Turk around Shirlington for one last Hurrah. I ordered the most expensive steak they had at Copperwood Tavern for him. They brought out the steak Pittsburgh rare, followed by home made ice scream and all the love. They would not let me pay for a thing saying that Turk was a Shirlington dog and they wanted to be the ones give him his last meal.
That is what hospitality means; those are the moments that you take the time to treat your guests as family. I am a devoted fan for life.

Copper wood is a great farm to table spot in the Shirlington village. They have plenty of interesting and tasty dishes on the menu — each one reasonably priced (considering the location).
The décor is a bit rustic — it’s plenty of wood and earth tones to make you feel at home. Definitely like the outside seating when the weather is nice — just avoid the hotter hours — image sun usually is off if that side of the street by 5pm.

Breakfast is the meal to have here, try their version of chicken and waffles — Chicken and Biscuits! We have been here for breakfast and happy hour.
Dinner is a little steep for our budget. Happy Hour does not have any real discounts but they do have an amazing number of moonshines and infused drinks.

I had a great late lunch /​early dinner here with my fiancé. First and foremost, our waiter Scott was on point, super helpful, and clearly cared about us having a nice time. The beer selection is solid and I had a double ipa as well as a moonshine based cocktail. All of the food is farm to table. We had the French onion soup and fried green tomatoes to start. I’m a little bit of a French onion soup snob, and this was great. For mains we had the ribeye and eggplant casserole and those were great. The brussels sprouts were unreal and the Mac and cheese with truffles was creamy and amazing.
For dessert we were stuffed but couldn’t pass up the home made ice cream and I’m glad we didn’t. I don’t even like Nutella that much but the Nutella ice cream was some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. The consistency and the taste was amazing.

I love Copperwood for their bar, drinks, and bar food… specifically, the complimentary truffle oil popcorn!
The bar has a good vibe with a lot of seats and space to mingle. The flavored moonshines are fun and tasty. Love the lamb-​burger sliders and fries!

Saying goodbye to a coworker is easier over oysters! Lucky us it was National Oysters on a Half Shell Day. The oysters were $ 1 each (got them baked, they were a little chewy but good)

Stuffed Eggs (they weren’t loved)
Steak and Ceaser salad (way too much dressing)
Sliders (loved them)
Farm Salad (great)
Fried Green Tomatoes (thin, crispy and fresh)
French Onion Soup (super cheesy and good)
I was very sad that I did not get to try dessert. I ordered the Brownie and Nutella ice cream, I dreamt about how good it would be. To my dismay it never came out and we were tired and full by then.

They removed the best brunch item on the menu (in my opinion the breakfast burrito) and raised their prices. I am removing a star from their review.

We tried this restaurant on a Friday night. There were no tables in the dining room so we sat near the window at a high table. The water was friendly but forgot us initially and we waited a long time to give him our order. Not a good start. The food was ok. I had the trout which was boring and a bit dry. I ordered a side of Brussels stouts, which was expensive and not so great, but a huge portion; not sure why so large. My husband’s burger was better and the fries were ok. The popcorn as we waited was a fun idea. We didn’t try the deserts as nothing really tempted us. We’ll have to give this place a second try.

Great experience with large group (14 People) for my wedding rehearsal dinner. Ages ranged from 7 months to 70+yrs with dietary requests from vegetarian to low sodium. I personally had the chicken breast and can always taste the «farm to table» quality! My 6yr old niece had the grilled cheese and loved it (aka it was still approachable for a person who likely has tasted Kraft American cheese to date). I was also able to convince my niece to try Asparagus for the first time (she loved it).
As for the service, my 4yr old nephew spilled water and immediately a staff member was there with an «it’s ok» and let me help you wipe it up. Not to mention with 4 children under age of 7yrs old, they kept the popcorn coming (the kids literally ate a meals worth of popcorn) before the real meal arrived. By bringing the popcorn, the adults were able to talk and genuinely enjoy each others company without the usual empty mouth and stomach caused whining of the kids. It worked out beautifully!
We chose Copperwood for our rehearsal dinner as it was «our first date» spot so it was very meaningful for us to return with our friends and family and share our stories of our first date.
Long story short, the food is first rate, the parking nearby is free, the staff is friendly and accommodating!

Found this restaurant on Unilocal when looking for brunch locations in my area. I went on a Saturday morning which seemed like a good time because it was busy but not crowded. The atmosphere is really great/​cool look, and as I mentioned the layout is very open where even though it was busy at the time, I did not feel I was on top of other tables/​customers.
Tremendous service. I came in by myself and after I was seated I began talking with my waiter, Vlad. At first, it was the typical conversation about the menu. He took his time to describe some of the dishes and what he liked about each. Then got into different topics; soccer, cities we’ve been to, and telling me the history of the complimentary popcorn (more on that later). Throughout my meal, he would walk by and show me some of the different dishes I had asked about, before taking them to the respected tables. I haven’t had too many waiters that would actually show me the prepared dish that we may have talked about or I questioned and so I was very appreciative for that. Again, Vlad was a greater server.
Ricotta Blueberry Pancakes: Great choice if you are considering ordering this meal. I would assume it is one of their more popular dishes but if you enjoy pancakes they are worth trying. Two very large pancakes served with Orange Butter. Normally I do not like getting any type of pancake with fruit, because it tends to be served with a fruit sauce covering the pancakes which oversaturates the taste. That was not the case here, I thought the blueberries tasted great and added that sweet/​moist taste to the pancakes. The orange butter that came with them was something different. It tasted like regular butter with a hint of oranges. It wasn’t overwhelming but definitely noticeable and I enjoyed it. Something small, but one thing that would make this place a little unique.
Complimentary Popcorn: Must try! At the end of my meal I asked Vlad what the deal was with the popcorn; I had originally turned down his offer while I was waiting on my food. They tasted surprisingly delicious. I was expecting your typical popcorn with a regular taste and could potentially be stale. Wow, they season it with their BBW rub and man is it good. Definitely recommend trying it while you’re waiting.
Overall, the service was tremendous and really made my experience great here.

I’ve been here 3 times now — once for dinner and twice for brunch, and while I had high hopes for the restaurant, it just has not delivered consistently to receive anything higher than 2 stars from me. It is a bit pricier than most of the other restaurants in the Village, so at most I would have expected either consistent great service or great food (if not both). They definitely seem to be more of a hit or miss during peak hours of operations (i.e. brunch).
If you are dead set on trying this establishment for brunch, I’d suggest making a reservation or being okay with waiting for a table/​seat in the bar area.

Copperwood Tavern is a solid place to brunch. If you’re going on Sunday around noon, make a reservation or expect a looong wait — who knew Shirlington was ever hopping?
I have been here a few times and it is consistently good. Their home fries are excellent, and the bananas foster French toast is yummy (although the last time I went, bananas needed a bit more ripening). You’ll find all the brunch staples you could want here. But where’s the hot chocolate???

It’s been almost a year since our last visit here, and unfortunately the service was disappointing enough that I thought it warranted a 3 star review instead of last year’s 4 stars.
We wanted to go out to eat somewhere nice for no reason, just because. We remembered how much we’d enjoyed each part of the meal last Valentine’s Day so we came back. Service was great, just as it was before. It’s just that not all of the food tasted as amazing as before, or at the very least wasn’t worth what we paid.
To start, we had the mushroom bruchetta, tavern salad, and french onion soup. All of those were excellent, and my husband felt the meal could’ve been saved had we just ordered three more mushroom bruchettas instead. Our entrée was the kale with bacon and the butter chicken. The kale was a bit overseasoned and a little more cooked than I would’ve preferred, since it’d lost it’s crunch. The chicken wasn’t awful, but it was drab and not at all worth being over $ 20.

We were super excited to see a farm to table option in Shirlington and with outdoor seating on a warm Sunday evening… But unfortunately the food was just sub-​par. I rarely give under 3 star reviews but this meal was truly disappointing.
The scallops were super salty and rubbery. The rockfish was ok– also on the saltier side but I expected more since the server was just raving about it. BF had the steak tartare which was bland and tasted like «ground beef from a processed plant” — not grass fed cows. And the pâté was just ok– but nothing to write home about. The part that we both liked were the little cornbreads they served.
For the price point and how they advertise as farm to table– we were truly expecting a higher quality dining experience.

I have only had oysters from this place and the grilled ones are AMAZING. Seriously, they are pretty darn good! Perfectly dusted with parm cheese and I’m guessing butter — then lightly grilled and served with more melted butter. They are light and slightly crunchy. Again, AMAZING.
We have only sat the bar and it is really cute. The drink specials are ok on Happy Hour — I think its a few dollars off draft beers and then a house wine special. Nothing special but hey, I go for the oysters which are only 1 $ on Happy Hour!
The service has always been pretty good as well. We have no complaints in that department.
Last time we sat at the bar there was a drip coming from the pipes above us. We mentioned it to the bartender and she said ‘I know, isn’t it annoying?’. Well, yea it is. Its a very minor drip that wasn’t often but we could still notice it.
