Sorry for the long review but wanted to explain my situation. I needed to get my teeth cleaned and decided to go to the dentist that my in-laws and husband have been going to for years. Being a recent transplant to Minnesota, I just wanted the teeth cleaning because I’ll be finding a local dentist for future treatment. Got an appointment last minute and they asked that I send x-rays the morning of. I contacted a previous doctor and had the x-rays sent by 11:30 am and my appointment was at 2pm. When I got to the dentist’s office I was led back to get x-rays and told the lady that I already submitted them via email. She said that they needed bitewings and I told her I am just visiting so I’d prefer to wait on x-rays since I won’t be a regular patient. She had me sit back down in the lobby and I waited for 30 minutes while she chewed out the receptionist for not indicating my file to show me as not really a new ‘patient’. When in a service industry you probably don’t want your customers hearing you chew out co-workers. After my 30 minute wait, another lady came up to me, didn’t introduce herself and this is where the fun began. She told me that I needed to have x-rays taken. I was confused and explained that I had already emailed my xrays, to which her response was that they have a proper procedure and I needed to get bitewing xrays or didn’t have to get my teeth cleaned by them. I asked whether insurance would cover the xrays or if I could call another recent dentist about sending those via email and was told that insurance only covers 1 xray per year and so it would be an out of pocket cost and the time was now or never to decide whether I wanted treatment and there was no time to call a previous dentist. I asked if she could at least check how much it would cost out of pocket so I could make an informed decision and she finally relented, went away and told the hygienist it would take a minute, as if it was my fault that she had to do some work! She came back and told me what it would cost out-of-pocket and at that point I said that’s fine, I am ok with that. At this point I was frankly pissed off at being treated like a second-hand citizen, especially when I was trying my best to work with them. I was this close to walking out of there but the hygienist was very friendly and I decided to stick it out. The reason I gave the practice a 4 overall is because the hygienist could see how upset I was and talked to the doctor who said I didn’t need the xrays given my non-local status and that they would be happy to take care of me. The hygienist made every effort to make me feel welcome and happy and took great care of me. The dentist was also very friendly and answered my questions and I was out the door. I found out the offending employee was Sherry, the Office Manager and I will say she has no right to be in a customer-facing setting with that attitude. Had it not been for the hygienist and dentist, I was ready to walk out of there and the in-laws would have all stopped going there for cleanings, which would have been a loss of 5 long-term patients. I hope that the dentist realizes what kind of liability he has working in his office and trains this employee so his reputation is not affected as a result of her stupidity.
