How is it that I have not discovered this gem sooner? Happened to be looking for finger food to bring to a potluck and came in here on a lark. The lady behind the counter was very sweet, and even offered me a taste of the«famous cheese rolls», still warm, from the oven. Really good, crisp & flaky, with a not too sweet crust on the outside and creamy filling inside. Also got a dozen chicken empanada, freshly baked not fried, very good crust-to-filling ratio. Filling was fresh, moist and tasty. I learned later they are no neophytes t the bakery biz(went their own ways from a previous partnership with Valerio’s bakery — a Filipino specialty bakery). Also was told they would be relocating soon to the Saefood City Market on Artesia Blvd, so look out for coming change of address.

A family friend dropped off a box of dozen cheese rolls from Eriel’s Bakeshop and we were delighted because we thought we had finally found a closer alternative to Porto’s Bakery in Downey! However, at first bite, my family all agreed that the cream cheese filling from Porto’s tastes much better. We couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason but all of us agreed that we would rather drive the extra few miles to Porto’s for amazing cheese rolls than settle for Eriel’s mediocre cheese rolls. But then again, Eriel’s is a suitable choice if you’re in a time crunch or someone has never had cheese rolls before(like my friend I shared this with who thought Eriel’s was amaazing)!

Walked into this store on a whim. I’m glad we did, because they had some of the best Filipino baked goods this side of the pond. Anyway… couldn’t help but notice the negative reviews, so I thought I’d give my honest opinion on the quality of food and service that they provide. Holllla!

Service was horrible. So I walk in since they claimed they were world famous for their cheese roll and pastries. They lady sitting out front seemed upset she had to get up. She asked if we were going to buy anything before we even got to the counter. We said yes, so with a sigh she got up and walked behind the counter and wow were we unwelcome. As for the food, had a bite of the cheese roll and that was the end of that. Will not return…

My mother and I came here to buy their cheese rolls because we were told that theirs was cheaper than Porto’s and Goldilocks’ cheese rolls. They have a pack of 14 cheese rolls for $ 10.50 which means it should be 75 cents per cheese rolls, which isn’t that much cheaper than the above places. Eriel’s «famous» cheese rolls are decent. They have more breading than actual cheese in their rolls but it’s still pretty tasty. I do think that theirs cannot compare to Portos nor Goldilocks though. They also have empanada’s for $ 1 each as well as stuffed pandesal for $ 1 as well. I personally think that it’s a bit pricey for their size. The empanada’s at Red Ribbon are bigger and are packed with more meat and is around $ 1.39 each(a guess). The place is nice and clean. The workers are friendly as well. I do like family-owned bakeshops because of their ambiance. Cash ONLY.

Im a nursing student still living with my parents, so every once and a while I like to bring something home for them. A student in my class brought in cheese rolls from Eriel’s Bakeshop last week. She told me they were comparable to Porto’s Bakery and I didn’t believe her. I used to drive an hour all the way to Glendale just to grab me a box! I was surprised when my friend was right, the cheese rolls were delicious. The crust was flaky, and the filling wasn’t too sweet. Better yet, I found out Eriel’s Bakeshop was only down the street from my house in Lakewood! I went there the following day, and it was a cute little store. I liked all the colors. They were well-stocked on everything too! The woman working the front offered me all their freshly baked products, and she even gave me a sample of their macaroni salad. I was sold. I ended up spending $ 25 worth of Eriel’s. 1 box of cheese rolls(10 pieces for $ 10 or $ 1each), macaroni salad, 2 cornedbeef rolls, and 2 adobo rolls. When I got home, I didnt know which to each first! I ended up trying the cornedbeef roll. It was great. I almost ended up eating the second one too, but i decided to save that for my parents. I liked how the sweetness of the bread balanced out the saltyness of the meat. I give the cheese rolls, macaroni salad, and adobo rolls a 2 thumbs up! I have visited the bakery twice more since. I’ve visited the Porto’s in Downey once, but I’d rather just go to Eriel’s to satisfy my cheese roll cravings. I just go to Porto’s for other things.

I came here during my search for the perfect or damn close to perfect cheese roll. My S.O. being absolutely infatuated with them I went on a search to find him the most delicious cheese roll I could get my hands on. Sick of the typical Red Ribbon and Goldilocks, I set my sights on family owned and operated mom&pop Filipino bakeries, bc as we all know, the good stuff usually comes from those types of places. After seeing signs about being famous for their cheese rolls, I had to try this place out. I walked in with the S.O. and saw that a whole box of cheese rolls were being sold for only $ 1!!! Wtheezy?! Maybe it was some sort of grand opening promotion that they had going on, but that got me sold and I immediately picked up a box. After looking around at the other goodies they had to offer, I decided to get myself a little treat… I chose the ube filled ensaymada. The typical ensaymada is a soft bread with cheese, butter and sugar on top. Totally high in calories, but as long as it makes me squeal like a pig bc it tastes so damn good, its alright with me! Then the total came out, I forgot what the exact number was, but it was close to $ 12. How the fudge did it come out be over $ 10? No, I take that back how the fudge did it come out to be more than $ 5?! Well, apparently the little sign for the cheese rolls saying it costs $ 1 was a mistake and was really $ 10. Ok, but I know for a fact that sign was up there for well over 2 weeks, so why didn’t they bother to correct it? Yes a $ 1 for a box of cheese rolls is too good to be true, but if I’ve seen the sign up for over 2 weeks… I’m going to assume they’re being serious. Overall the taste… My S.O. and I actually quite enjoyed the cheese rolls, he appreciated the flaky texture of the pastry and that it was fresh. The cheese filling was sweet, but not overly sweet carrying some of that light tartness of cream cheese. The pastry also came with a little shiny glaze kind of like the ones you find on a palmier, so with the not too sweet cheese filling it was a pretty tasty treat. The ube ensaymada on the other hand was not that great. The bread was pretty dense than other ensaymadas I’ve tried, tasting almost stale. The ube filling as well as the cheese/butter/sugar topping were very lacking in portion. Just barely any ube to be able to detect it while the topping just wasn’t all that. As much as I like supporting privately owned businesses especially ones that are just starting out, I can’t say I’ll be coming back. I just really wasn’t too impressed by the execution of their products to be honest.

When your tag line reads: «Famous Cheese Rolls and Cakes», then you better be prepared to meet your customers’ expectations by providing at least decent-tasting cheese rolls and/or cakes because if your«famous cheese rolls and cakes» fall short of decent, then you’re pretty much setting your shop up for disaster. The first time I strolled into Eriel’s, eager to try a cheese roll or maybe an empanada, I was turned away because they were a cash-only store. They don’t even take cards for a fee. This little setback kept me away for the next 7 weeks, because every time I passed by and wanted to get something, I couldn’t because I didn’t have cash. FINALLY, I passed by one day and I just so happened to have cash in my pocket and was ready to spend it away at Eriel’s…BUT, at 11AM, the choices were already few… and worst of all, at least a day old. On top of that, the prices were at least 50 cents more than what the other Filipino bakeries in the area were charging for FRESH baked breads and rolls. I was pretty turned off. But I had waited this long to try them out and I was already in the store so I bought some stuff to try anyway. I wanted to try one of the day-old empanadas, but unfortunately the lady before me took the remaining two, so I settled for day-old cream cheese rolls and day-old adobo roll. The adobo roll($ 1.50) was actually pretty good. The bread was soft and I really enjoyed the savory adobo filling. The cream cheese roll($ 0.79) on the other hand. To begin with, the name«cream cheese roll» was completely deceiving – there was little cream cheese to be found and it was definitely NOT a roll. My first bite into the cold cheese roll(which was more like a bread) felt like I was biting into a stale, cold, dry, mealy loaf of overbaked bread. What made it worse was that I could see cubes of uncooked butter cubes in various areas of the bread. What’s up with that? The cream cheese topping on the bread wasn’t any good either – too much coarse sugar mixed in and wayyy too little cream cheese. I thought maybe heating up the«roll» in a microwave might help, but it didn’t. I hate wasting food, but the roll was inedible and disgusting to the degree that I had no choice but to throw it away. The lesson here Unilocalers is to stick to the Filipino bakeries that you know. Sorry Eriel, your adobo roll was good but not good enough to bring me back when I have better and cheaper choices less than a block away. You’re going to have to do way, WAY better than this to ever bring me back again!
