While everything changes around us, Jolly Pirate Donuts is a timeless staple that made living in Ashland almost tolerable. The donuts are delicious, the service is great, and the old timers that frequent the place have wistful conversations about high school football. I hope they never remodel this place. That brown and yellow color scheme brings back so many childhood feelings.

Great local business. I love their doughnuts and couldn’t imagine going somewhere else when I’m in town. Personal favorite is the strawberry and cream filled with strawberry icing. They have the best filling.

My family is from the area, though my parents and myself were always elsewhere, due to the military. Visiting family and getting Jolly Pirate donuts just went hand in hand. I moved back to the area to attend Marshall, and Jolly Pirate was still just as delicious. I became a little too comfortable, though, and took it for granted. I’m now missing my dear Jolly Pirate! After living all over the U.S. and abroad, I can safely say that it’s hard to find a donut shop that compares to Jolly Pirate. This isn’t just nostalgia, it’s straight-up truth. Kruellers are my favourite donut, and Jolly Pirate is one of the few places that actually makes them properly; lots of other places just make regular cake donuts with a twisted texture and call it a krueller. WRONG. They have a huge variety and they’re all good, no joke. Jolly Pirate has somehow perfected the perfect texture for a donut. To me, it’s not so much about the icing or other crap on top, but the perfect, fluffy texture. Filling, if present, is of equal importance. Jolly Pirate gets this right, too, and their filled donuts thankfully lack the gross goo and bland crime many shops use. Jolly Pirate also has amazing hours. I now live in an area where all the donut shops are closed by noon. Bogus. I miss 24 hour donut locations!

Delicious. Not like the best New England has to offer, but New England is the home of the donut, and this is eastern Kentucky. Certainly a far sight better than any of the large chain offerings, and with some interesting sub-varieties. No matter what, Jolly Pirate’s not earning a fifth star unless/until they offer a chocolate donut, though.

The place has not changed in at least 20 years. Very 1980’s looking. But they have the best donuts on the planet. Seriously my mom sent me some to the west coast once because I was jonesing for a Jolly Pirate donut.

This is part of a donut chain but feels more like a local bakery. My customer recommended this place over the local Tim Horton’s. The pastries are good. This location is usually full of local folks drinking coffee. They have many different types and flavors of donuts — Jelly, Cream Pie, Cream, Custard, traditional, etc… If you want an inexpensive dozen of donuts(they do a baker’s dozen(13)) then try this place out :-)
