Yay — free kayaking is awesome. Be careful though because most of the volunteers are complete dicks. I would much rather pay to paddle than be yelled at on land and at sea for no good reason. Especially after donating to their organization. I get it, it is a beautiful day and the volunteers are resentful that they chose to serve people for free and can’t have any fun. Volunteering is a choice– be happy doing it or don’t do it at all.
Recommendation: don’t waste your time with lic boathouse kayaking unless you want some pompous asshats to straight up ruin your good mood.

Volunteer run non-​profit that offers free kayaking! Great group of folks who want to get you out on the water safely. Interesting perspective of the city from the kayak. It’s a good way to try something new for a few minutes or you can request to join a longer trip. Longer trips are quite exciting! Please donate as they are donation-​based!

San Francisco, CA
An incredible new way to see the city and its impressive skyline! LIC Community Boathouse seems to have many different events that are easy for people to enjoy — free 20 minute walk-​in kayaking, free «lottery”-style 60 minute kayak trips, free special trips with meals included, etc. We did the hour-​long kayak trip with a group including some volunteers, and it was a gorgeous view paddling up from Gantry Plaza to the Queensboro Bridge and back. The best part is that everything is free (with donations, which you should definitely do since kayaking in most other places is about $ 10/​hour!) thanks to the awesome volunteers that make this all work.

This was one of the easiest things to do, just show up, sign a waiver, get a life-​vest and get on a kayak. You only get 20 min. buts hey it’s free and your out in the open water. Very Cool.

Free kayaking in the East River. What could be better on a sunny day?! Just show up, sign a waiver, put on a life preserver and they even push you into the water. No one capsized while I was there cause these are wide ocean type kayaks. Very easy to maneuver!

this is an all volunteer nonprofit Long Island city Community Boathouse. they offer free sunday Afternoon Public Paddle when the tides are right at Hallet’s Cove nearby. The organization is located on the south side of Anable Basin at the end of fifth Street just northof 46th avenue.
