Active Climbing

Awesome place to climb. The staff are incredibly kind and helpful. My daughter (10), begs to go every weekend. She has a great time and the people there are always willing to help. Even the other climbers don’t usually seem bothered by a kid climbing around the boulder room and are always very nice.

Long version: My sons and I were on a long road trip and needed a place to stretch/​exercise. We are new fans to rock climbing and thought it would be a good idea to try out an indoor gym in Athens. We read the good reviews of this location on Unilocal and gave it a try. I’m so glad we did! We were greeted by a very helpful staff member who reviewed the gym’s rules with us. My sons were very happy with the different courses they had available. There were courses designed for beginners, as well as experts. The mats were very clean — which is not always the case in rock climbing gyms. And, the pricing was very fair — $ 12 each (we had our own shoes). It was well air conditioned and they had cool drinks for sale (just $ 1 for a bottled water). I highly recommend Active Climbing. And, I hope to return here during our next road trip through the South.

In Athens for the weekend and a bit chilly on this Saturday afternoon. My 10-​year old has been begging to try rock climbing so we ventured to Active Climbing. She is not naturally athletic but after some coaching and kindness from the owner, Adrian, she made numerous climbs and finished with such confidence and pride. My 6 year old was up and down numerous times. Because of the talents of the owners and the wonderful facility (with equipment and walls for individuals of varying abilities and tastes), my girls had such a great time!!! The environment is quite friendly as well with people of all ages on site. Highly recommend.

Active Climbing really cares about the community. I am fairly new to Athens, so I was a little nervous about walking into the gym by myself. However, the first night I went, the owners were extremely helpful. After all of the signing in, the owner personally took me to the ropes and coached me on my climbing. After about an hour, we went over to the boulder room and he showed me around, pointed out some routes that I could do as a beginner, and then let me loose. It was very comforting to know that I could come here and be welcomed in like an old friend. I have been going to Active Climbing ever since that first experience. I love it!

Don’t let the exterior of this plain-​looking brick building deceive you: it’s the home of a bright, colorful, and well-​run climbing gym! I first met the owner, Adrian, at a Convention & Visitors Bureau workshop. He told me about his business, and I told him how happy I was that the gym is about a block from my subdivision. Despite its proximity and despite the many friendly reminders from Active Climbing’s Facebook wall, it took me a few months to actually get over there to climb.
The guy working the day my cousin and I visited was super friendly and managed to help us along with the three or four families that were there. There are two separate climbing gyms and each room has multiple paths for you to climb, all arranged by difficulty level. I chose EASY all the way! They teach you how to use the harness (and will stay there and belay you themselves if you’re not interested in having a friend belay you), and they’ll rent you snug-​fitting shoes made especially for climbing.
