The best place for fried chicken and catfish in Athens! My husband and I have been here several times and are always impressed! Their sweet hest sauce is super as well as their house sauce. They obviously cut up their chicken tenders here because they are huge. We will keep coming back for more

I travel a lot for work and this is my 3rd time to enjoy the best chicken I have had in a very long time! Fresh – cooked to order so appreciate the 20 minute wait!

This is our go-to Sunday night fried chicken place! Can’t believe there aren’t lines of folks waiting to get in! Sooo good!

I was one of only three tables in the whole place. It took quite a while for my food to arrive. I ordered the two piece dark. What finally arrived was a severely overcooked wing and a breast. When the waitress,(a lovely girl) came over to check on me; I let her know this was not dark meat. She asked if I wanted another meal made. I said«no thanks.» I wasn’t about to wait another 20 minutes for overcooked chicken. So she apologizes and walks off. I eat a couple fries, drink half my tea and wait. I’m expecting someone to come and talk to me. Didn’t happen. I get her attention again and she comes over. I say I’d like my check. She asks if I’d like a box. Sure, let me take that home and not eat it. Ugh… FYI– paid $ 12.04 for a meal I didn’t eat.

First, for all those reviewers who said it took too long for the meal to come, here is the exact wording from the menu — «Here at Champy’s freshness if of utmost importance, so all chicken is prepared fresh to order. This may take longer, however it is worth the wait!!!» If you don’t want to wait, best to leave, I think. The fried chicken is fantastic and my wife and I both enjoyed our sides. The atmosphere is fun, even for a non-drinker like me. The menu is limited, so you might want to check it out before you go. It is online. My wife and I have added Champy’s to one of our regular selections for our Saturday night date.

I honestly did not enjoy my meal. The chicken was not bad, but the fries were so salty they were almost inedible. Service was so slow(about 30 minutes) and the cole slaw was so oniony it overpowered the cabbage. On the plus side, the atmosphere is very genial and the decorations add to the bluesy feel. I would have really, really liked to have loved this place, but I unfortunately did not.

Their fried chicken is really good but way too pricey. They have amazing french fries & the best potato salad ever! Their coleslaw is decent but nothing special. They also have amazing ranch! If you come here don’t expect to eat healthy because like everything here is pretty much deep fried. Also, their menu items are pricey.

This place is wonderful great atmosphere great and friendly device my one and only complaint is Paprika on the tatersalad but that is a simple fix and the price is very reasonable for what you get

Interesting… saw a note that says«what keeps bringing you back» to Champy’s. As I have said in many reviews, simple… This is the best fried chicken I have had anywhere! I am not saying it is the«best in the world»…I have not eaten all the fried chicken in the world, so I cannot say that… but I CAN say… best«I have ever had…» I love this place… frequent it… keep it going… and revel in eating their glorious fried chicken… and…next visit? I am trying the catfish!

I thought the food was really good. I’ve had the chicken, slaw, and beans several times. Always good. I have not tried the catfish but others at the table said that they were great. Fun atmosphere and it’s worth waiting to get fried chicken that has not been under a heat lamp for 2 hours.

The staff at champy’s is always so friendly! I was happy when I was seated by a smiling waitress in a comfy booth. I ordered the fried chicken salad and I really enjoyed it and my friend ordered the 3 tender plate which had amazing fries and slaw as the side. Our appetizer of fried green tomatoes were amazing and I also loved the fried pickles! Overall a great experience!

Fantastic restaurant with an enjoyable environment. The chicken is obviously delicious but the baked beans are the best in town. Who else sells their beer in 40 oz bottles?

Daughter and I are trying Champy’s famous fried chicken. We are off to a good start because the staff is super nice and friendly. Next the tea is excellent and it has«crushed ice»(My Fav). My daughter had the chicken tenders and I had the traditional fried chicken. Great meal. Champy’s is an eclectic establishment. They are going for a dive atmosphere it’s fun to look around at all the neat stuff. Over all it was great.

7÷2÷15 Updated review: Chicken and Catfish are really good and fresh. A little pricy for a Chicken shack, but we were stuffed so no real complaints there. Chicken was cooked upon order and was hot and crispy. Sides of baked beans and mashed potatoes were also good. Chicken livers were perfect. Give it shot if you like good fried chicken. Glad to see them in Athens.

Champy’s was in my bookmarks to try since last year!(Chattanooga TN) I’m thinking Well, now that ATHENS has a location I must GO! We made it and even though we did take out, Mr. Couldn’t keep his hand out of the brown paper bag full of champys fresh, golden, crispy, delicious chicken sitting on top of bread lining the bottom of the bag! We also had the potatoe salad, baked beans(I really liked them, a mix of 3 different beans) potatoe salad was so so. The tamales were not a favorite.(It’s the chicken that wears the crown here) The location is next to IHOP if you passed that, just back up. The place is a big metal rustic divey place, It has a funky metal chicken to greet you in front so you can’t miss it. This location isn’t far so, if I don’t feel like frying up my secret chicken recipe champys will do. :)

I came to try the chicken however, after I saw cuisses de grenouilles on the menu, I had to get them. Chicken can also be purchased by the piece or as a snack without sides. I ordered the frog legs, fries, a chicken leg and a wing. Five pair of frog legs came with the order. Of the frog legs I ate recently at other establishments, these tasted the best, even though they were smaller. It was the seasoning, same goes for the chicken, it was good! The chicken tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. The fries were seasoned with Old Bay seasoning. I like Old Bay seasoning, so they were good also. I could see the bar area from where I was sitting and I noticed a strawberry cake and cooper mugs from where I was sitting. I requested a slice of strawberry cake. A member of the staff informed me that a bakery in Athens prepares them for the restaurant. The cake had a rich strawberry icing with pieces of strawberry between the slices. The cooper mugs was a sign that I could request one of my favorite drinks, a Moscow Mule. It was great! The service was good, I was seated promptly and the members of the staff were cordial.

I was so excited when my fellow Unilocaler, Richard R., told me there was a Champy’s opening in Athens. I had been to the Chattanooga, Tennessee location so, I had to make an announcement to my fellow fried chicken lovers and plan a trip. The clan decided to make the hour and a half trip to Athens, Georgia from Stockbridge, Georgia. Yes, the chicken in Chattanooga, Tennessee was THAT good that I’d drive almost the same distance again in another direction to try the new location. I just had to see if the chicken was as good in Georgia as it was in Tennessee. Upon entering the restaurant, you’re greeted to by an atmosphere that’s so welcoming — that alone makes you want to grab a table and see what they’re offering. The waitresses were all so helpful and friendly, as well. Our waitress’ name was Sarah and she had the best personality ever. She was super cute and very bubbly. Even when she didn’t know what an Arnold Palmer(or Uptown for you northerners) was. her friendliness made up for the lack of knowledge. There were 5 of us, so we had a plethora of food on our table. We got a family 8 piece to share with mashed potatoes, green beans and baked beans. The youngster of the group ordered the 3 chicken tenders and fries plate. Another fellow got the catfish dinner and a beer — by the way, they have 40oz beers!!! *cheers*. The last of the group got the 3 piece plate. I had the chicken previously and it was just as good as I’d remembered. Mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy. Green beans were perfect and the baked beans tasted good. Fried fish — this fried fish was delicious. I almost wished I’d ordered it myself but you don’t go to Champy’s for fish. You go for the CHICKEN. Overall, this meal was just as great as Chattanooga. I’ll be back soon!

It was an ironic coincidence that I discovered Champy’s about a week ago in Chattanooga, TN only to find out they opened this location 25 minute from my home just this week. While I really liked the chicken in the Chattanooga location, I loved the chicken here. The well-seasoned crispy & tasty batter was cooked to a perfect golden brown. The meat lurking just below the skin was tender & juicy euphoria. In contrast I thought the location in Chattanooga was a tad salty, but the seasoning here was just right. Even the fries and baked beans were better, waaaaaay better! So it’s only right that I give the Athens, GA location a higher star rating. They really nailed it today! Inside and out the décor is all dive with quirky highlights like the toilet near the entrance filled with sand. A clever place to place your butt, cigarette butt that is. Or the flowing beer tap that seems to be floating in midair just behind the hostess stand. Part of the tradition of the Chattanooga locations is to sign a dollar bill and place it on the walls. Over time there will be thousands of dollars covering every available square inch, so I was excited to be one of the first to add my signed dollar bill. COMPLAINTDEPARTMENT My only real gripe today was it took over ½ hour to deliver my 2 piece chicken plate to go. It would have been nice if the staff had said«Sorry for the wait. Can we offer you a soda or something while we prepare your food», but they made no sort of courtesies for the unusually long wait time. FINALTHOUGHTS Yes, they definitely tested my patience today, but I can honestly say it was worth the wait. I really enjoyed my fried chicken meal, surprisingly more than I did at their original location in Chattanooga. New openings always come with a few bugs, but if they can keep cooking the chicken here as well as they did today, I can wait all day! Well, that may be stretching the truth but I will say good food tend to make me a lot more pliable and lenient. Anywayz, being the first Unilocaler to review anyplace is nerve-racking. But I think Champy’s Fried Chicken is really great and I hope you do too. PS — they also have great chicken tenders.
