Need a safe and free ride home from downtown or anywhere Athens? Then Designated Dawgs should be your best friend. Designed to prevent students from driving drunk or getting put in an unsafe situation in the largely unregulated taxis in Athens, Designated Dawgs is entirely student run and donation financed organization. While the idea is to help those who may have had a little too much«fun,» many of the people who use it are actually stone cold sober and just want a free ride home. Either way, it’s an invaluable service to the Athens and UGA community. If you find yourself in need of a free ride on a Thursday or Friday night, head on over to the Designated Dawgs’ dispatch center at the corner of Washington and College avenues, right in front of the big parking deck. Put your name and number in your party on the list and wait for your free ride! Yup, it’s that simple. The vehicles are mostly rental cars, and on my last use the drivers were so nice and we had a great time chatting. A nice touch: they give you a «receipt» with the symptoms of alcohol poisoning printed on it, as well as the time and location you were picked up and dropped off at. I can only imagine this being immensely useful for those who use this service for its original intent…
