Art By The Glazz

This was my third time going to one of these art classes and this was the worst place by far. I agree with all the other comment about the lack of instruction, lack of professionalism, and unhappy experience. I would be better off buying some paint and a canvas and try it out by myself. Horrible!

I purchased a groupon for two in December 2013 and signed up for the class, a few days before the class i received an email saying the class was canceled. I went back to the web site to find another class and apparently the company was not offering any sessions for the next few weeks. I signed up for another class at the end of January and never received a response so i called and sent another email and they told me that all sessions have been canceled until «Spring 2014» and they wouldnt post the available sessions until the end of February. The groupon expires on March 2 so clearly that was a problem. This whole thing seems like a scam, i would not purchase anything from this company and i am reluctant to puchase anything on groupon again.

If you want to pay $ 55 for 3 ounces of wine and to paint whatever you want in the dark old bar area behind Landmark Diner then this is the class for you! Luckily I bought my seat in the «class» on half off depot so I felt like it was $ 16 well spent. I might have had to cry if I had paid the asking price of $ 55.
Compared to other painting and drinking places, Art By the Glazz (lol) actually does have some really pretty paintings. They pass out the image on print outs smaller than your average post it note. I have pretty bad vision so I had to hold the scrap of paper fairly close to my face to see what I was painting. The instructor gave us literally zero direction. At most places they guide you through with techniques and offer advice on color and strategy. At ABTG you are a free bird. The instructor did teach us how to ball up a paper towel to be used as a tool…
The location at Jerry Farber’s side door is a little tricky to find. You park in the Landmark Diner parking lot and there will be a sketchy side door that literally says «side door» where you will find the «class». Waiters (at least I assumed they were waiters) from Landmark also wandered in occasionally and sauntered around to check out the art. I felt like I was in an art school/​mobster mash up movie. The 3 hours actually went by really fast and I found myself hurrying along at the end. I did enjoy the host’s tunes that he cued up after a few disgruntled older women announced that they were going to a bar because the class was unstructured, expensive, and awful.
While I didn’t hate the painting I ended up with and I enjoyed the company of my friends, I would feel wrong about recommending Art by the Glazz to anyone. There are certainly better painting and drinking places out there.

«Art by the Glazz with two z’s — ’cause we do things differently around here.» So said our instructor when he kicked off our «class». And that they do.
Now I have not been to one of the other painting places like Dip N Dab or Canvas By U so I can’t compare, but I have a hunch that they offer a bit more structure and instruction than this particular company (I can’t quite call it a «studio» because it lacks that professionalism).
I found Art by the Glazz in a random Google search for painting classes in Atlanta. I was first drawn to Art by the Glazz because they offer classes for beautiful paintings that are colorful and scenic as opposed to the blah offerings of flowers and fruit baskets that I saw on the websites of other studios. They also had deals available on various channels including Half Off Depot and Groupon — that should have been the clue right there. I purchased one on Half Off Depot for one class with two glasses of one for a total price of $ 16.
Apparently this is a spinoff with original locations in DC and Virginia. Apparently they just started offer them in Atlanta a few weeks ago — and is shows. The classes are held at Jerry Farber’s — an entertainment club located just off the side of the famed Landmark Diner in Buckhead.
I came with a group of four for a Sunday evening class as a little birthday activity. We walked in and the instructor checked us in on his cell phone. One of my friend’s names was not on his list, but she had her confirmation email on hand as proof of her purchase, so he let her in without a problem.
Three long tables with blank canvases were positioned in the middle of this dimly lit little comedy club that I never knew existed. There was a long table set up at the front of the room by the stage with a slew of paint bottles. We posted up at our canvases and put on our little plastic aprons.
The instructor (I can’t remember his name) was a one man show. He started out by asking us if anyone was particularly attached to the painting design advertised on the website. He muttered something about an issue at Kinko’s as he passed out little copies of the painting printed on pieces of paper about the size of a playing card. Apparently he had only printed out one sheet of paper with the little printouts of the design, so he offered some alternatives to the lovely and vibrant «Midnight Stroll» piece that had attracted me to the class. Luckily I got one of the printouts for the original design, but one of my friends boldly opted to do a random design that he had on hand. I soon found that it really didn’t matter — we were all technically improvising in the end.
He proceeded to demonstrate how to crumple up a paper towel and use it as a textured brush. Fancy stuff. That was the only instruction that we received for the entire class as he set us loose to just start painting with our little paper printouts as guides. He spent the rest of the class wandering around and refreshing our wax strips of paper with paint colors. He queued up his iPod with a Pandora station of Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, and Coldplay, and filled up Dixie glass servings of red and white wine.
One group of three women were extremely displeased with the direction of the class. The spokesperson for their group took the instructor aside and berated him about the false advertising of the class. She argued that she could do this very activity in the comfort of her own home. Most classes offer more hands on instruction with someone demonstrating the painting techniques specific to the design as we go through the process. While she was probably right, it definitely made for some awkward tension in the room. She demanded that she get her money back. The three ladies proceeded to make negative comments about what a waste of time it was to come while they waited for him to issue refunds. Yikes! I certainly would have been just as upset if I had paid the full price of $ 55 as advertised on the website. But for $ 16, I was a-​okay with a lackluster and silly little Sunday Funday painting session.
In closing, I walked out of the place with a piece of work that is on par with a fourth grade art class project — worlds away from the gorgeous and lively piece posted online. The website describes the class as, «The Ultimate Painting & Wine Experience» which is far from how I would describe my experience. I think it was more like, «The silly paint for yourself experience with a splash of wine thrown in». Next time I’ll buy some wine and a few canvases and invite the gals over to the apartment for the same experience. But we can wear PJ’s.
