One of the fastest cafeteria lines for lunch, in the College Park area, is BJ’s Home Cooking, at the corner of Virginia Ave. and Virginia Ave. Yea, that’s confusing. Sometimes after 11:45 or so, the line is kinda long, but today at 11:30, there was only one person ahead of me. I got a lightly fried fish, whitefish I think, and steamed vegetables, and new potatoes. The fish had a great taste, and the veggies were hot and good. I was in and out in 18 minutes, and the price, we;;, at $ 6.52 including tax and drink –that’s a 10 in my book(a Unilocal 5)

Breakfast is actually the best here. The lunch is hit or miss… mostly miss. But the breakfast is right on and never skips a beat. From gigantic pancakes to fried fish to egg and sausage muffins and everything in between. The breakfast is what keeps me coming back

BJ’s Home Cooking is not a Southern Country nor Soul Food restaurant. With that being said, I like the food especially for the price, Seating inside is limited, however there is some seating outside. The food was not seasoned well and there is a small selection of non-vegetables. There is an Asian feel to some of the veggies. The chicken was good. The mac-n-cheese was okay and the cabbages were not under cooked. I had to add salt and pepper, which very rarely happens. Still a great price for the area and for a full meal! I will go back and try this spot again.

I have bad luck with meat and 3 type restaurants because at some point I always get sick from eating something. So far though, BJs(funny name) hasn’t made me lose my lunch. Their selection is hit or miss and ever changing. The meat, from turkey and dressing to baked chicken to meat loaf or bbq’d something all look good at times, but other times they just look dry, like they’ve been sitting a while. Almost have to say the same about the veggies. I got a veggie plate today with roasted potatoes with peppers/onions, corn and turnip greens with a cornbread muffin. A fountain drink comes with it and after taxes, it’s $ 5 even. Plenty of room inside, but there’s outdoor seating as well. These guys serve breakfast too, although i’ve never stopped to try, but they seem fast, clean, and close enough to the office to sidestep the fast food we’re kinda reduced to here. Welcome addition.

I woke up this morning thinking about corned beef hash… haven’t had it in a long time. Put it out of my mind. On the way back from dropping BF at airport, trying to avoid the mess on I-85, I was just looking for a bagel and shmear. There used to be a bread place here on Virginia… now it’s BJ’s Home Cooking. Why not? They did have bagels and cream cheese, and though I’m sure it wasn’t going to be NY Style, I would settle. Then peeking out of the bottom corner of the menu was, «gasp», corned beef hash! Decision made! The hash came out with the requisite crunchy crust. It came with an egg, perfectly soft scrambled as requested, three slices of crispy bacon(overkill, but tasty) and a flaky biscuit the size of a baseball, all for $ 4.50. They’ve got lots of biscuit choices-red sausage, sausage and gravy, steak, chicken sausage, and on-and-on, and the basic breakfast plate(egg, meat, grits and biscuit or toast) is only $ 3.59. Can’t say anything bad about my meal… it fit the bill, and my wallet perfectly. Plus it settled that craving for at least another year!

This is a new meat and 3 place in the area. My lunch group decided that it was time to give it a try, thinking that it’s been open for a while now and should have all the kinks worked out. I wish we’d gone to Willy’s next door. We entered and hopped in the buffet line quickly. Hmm a buffet? It looked a little sketchy — you could tell some things had been sitting out for a while. There were plenty of options though. I had the veggie plate with steamed cabbage, sauteed zucchini and peppers, and fried squash. It came with a roll and drink for $ 5. The rest of the table had the bbq pork, mashed potatoes, macaroni, and green beans. Everyone commented that the food was bland and that the potatoes and macaroni tasted like they were straight out of a box. The veggie plate had large portions which I didn’t finish and didn’t have an interest in bringing with me. The fried squash was the only thing that was really gross. But, the roll wasn’t good either. I know, I know… but how do you mess up a roll? The seating area was really cramped and uncomfortable. I’m not a big person but I was squished. If you’re looking for a meat and 3 in the area I suggest Lunch on Main St. They do also serve breakfast here — maybe that’s better?
