Flicks on 5^th returns this summer to 5^th Street at Technology Square in Midtown with an incredible lineup of the years’ blockbuster titles including: Quantum of Solace, Slumdog Millionaire, Duplicity, Taken, Monsters vs. Aliens, and I Love You Man. This free summer movie series starts at dusk (approx. 9pm) every Wednesday evening starting June 10 through July 22 (no showing on July 4^th week). This year 5^th Street will be closed between Spring Street and Techwood Drive so guests can bring their own blankets and chairs for viewing and dining. Moviegoers can eat in or carry out dinner at any of the many restaurants located on 5^th Street at Technology Square.

MUCH BETTER than screen on the green… Smaller crowds… You can bring chairs… people actually come to WATCH the movie, and not just talk over the movie… even if you’re in the back, you can still see/​hear… they show current movies… AND it’s free! what more could a girl ask for?

I went last night to see Night at the Museum. Had a wonderful time. A section of 5^th street is closed to traffic and then people set up chairs or blankets to watch the movie on the street. They even have a section for blankets near the screen so late comers don’t prop up their chairs in front of you and ruin your view. The screen is nice and the audio is good, however, there are some spots where it’s hard to hear if you are behind the speakers. If you find yourself in this position, just move so you are in front of a speaker or closer to a speaker. This was better than Screen on the Green because the people here actually shut up and watch the movie. Also, really nice was the availability to buy a varied of food for the various store fronts on 5^th street. I visited a restaurant called the Tin Drum, yummy Asian inspired food, a mix between Doc Cheys and Noodles. The crowd was ¼ of the Screen of the Green crowd, much nicer environment, but don’t tell everybody, it might turn into Screen on the Green and we won’t be able to watch the movie! Oh, I almost forgot they also give you free tasty buttered popcorn.

This outdoor summer film series in Technology Square is in its third season as it offers a variety of movies to the Atlanta community compliments of Georgia Tech. Movies are on Wednesdays starting June 6 and ending July 25 with no film on the fourth of July. Don’t think that you have to be a student to view these outdoor movies, families from all over the Atlanta area come with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy free movie popcorn and laugh while they watch movies like the Night at the Museum projected onto the big screen once the sun sets behind Tech Tower.
Attendance is about ten times smaller than the outdoor films offered at Piedmont Park down the street, so you are guaranteed a good seat with a great view and good sound. However, I do suggest getting there early to enjoy Tech Square. Grab pork BBQ from 5^th Street Ribs ‘n Blues, a cocktail drink at The Globe, or freshly made gourmet chocolate fudge ice cream from Lexington Chocolatier before the movie. Parking can be found in the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center deck on Spring Street.
This is one of my favorite summer activities, and you can be sure to catch me sprawled on my picnic blanket every Wednesday for the majority of these films laughing with friends at Will Farrell or singling along to Dreamgirls.
