I have been waiting 40 minutes for my food!!! It took forever to find parking and the food is taking even longer. I dont know how the food is going to be but I’m just not a fan of waiting this long for a hot dog.

I am quite sad that this place closed down. I live in the neighborhood and this place has now turned into another Flip Burger. I initially was very happy of the change as I prefer burgers to hot dogs and I had heard such wonderful things about Flip Burger. But I have since been to Flip and I did not enjoy it. I am hoping that perhaps this new one will be an improvement. HD1 offered a lot of different hot dog options and great enough for my boyfriend and I both to find something that we enjoyed. Since this was our first(and only, unfortunately) visit, we asked our waitress what would be the appropriate amount for us to purchase since we didn’t know much about the size of the dogs. She was spot on. I am really hoping that they choose to include at least some of their dogs at Flip or think of another way to offer the dogs sometime! This place will be missed.

On Unilocal, there’s FTR for First to Review. If there was such a thing as LTR(Last to Review), this review might earn it. HD1 opened Fall 2011 in Poncey-Highland(small stretch of N. Highland between Ponce and North Ave.) and officially closed a few days ago, August 18, 2013. It will re-open as Atlanta’s fourth Flip Burger location. In memoriam: HD1 is a gourmet hot dog restaurant brought to you by celebrity chef Richard Blais of Top Chef fame. You can think of HD1 as like the Flip Burger equivalent of hot dogs. It’s hip, it’s trendy, and it’s actually pretty good. Like Flip, the design of the restaurant is modern and stylish. In contrast to Flip’s bright white interior, HD1 is dark and bold. It’s not a terribly big restaurant. The front door for this place is HUGE. It’ll make you feel small. Inside, there’s a long bar, a long communal table down the center of the dining area, and high top tables along the windows. A few contemporary seatings for two dot the building outside. Generally, it’s a cool space. The menu has nearly 20 hot dogs to choose from and of course many of them are quite creative. Examples include the Garden Chili which is made out of a veggie frank with veggie chili, the Merguez made with lamb sausage, currants, mint cucumber, and yogurt, and the Little Italy made with fennel sausage, radicchio, fontina cheese, and San Marzano ketchup. Yes, these hot dogs are definitely themed. Expect to spend about $ 5 – 8 per hot dog. It may seem like a lot for«just a hot dog,» but these dogs come loaded with some top shelf ingredients. The size of the dogs are about what you’d expect. They’re not tiny and they’re not jumbo — I guess they’re sized just about right. Two dogs per person plus maybe an app or side should suffice. Sides include waffle fries(very popular), chili cheese fries, boiled peanuts, and Georgia peaches. Here’s what I’ve tried: Spinach Salad($ 6.00) — pickled raspberries, blue cheese, black pepper croutons, purple haze vinaigrette Tatanka($ 8.50) — chipotle buffalo sausage, summer corn salsa, ranch cream Cubanita($ 4.50) — Cuban ketchup, cilantro garlic fries Eastbound and Down($ 6.25) — Carolina pulled pork, country slaw, mop sauce The Spinach Salad is not bad. It’s a simple and straightforward dish where the ingredients are fresh enough. It tastes exactly how it’s described. One of the least exciting options on the menu. The Tantanka has an interesting flavor and texture thanks to the buffalo sausage. It tastes smokier than a regular frank and the consistency is chewier. Combined with the corn salsa and ranch cream, it’s got a very Southwestern feel to it. I recommend it if you want to try something different. The Cubanita is named as such mainly for the ketchup used. It’s more aromatic and not as salty as traditional American ketchup. Yes, there are fries on top of this dog. I really like the Eastbound & Down dog. Maybe it’s because I’m from North Carolina. You’re eating Carolina BBQ over a hot dog. Double meat. The slaw is where it’s at though. Good stuff. The mop sauce(similar to BBQ sauce) just adds to the flavor intensity. Overall, I think the quality of the franks is quite good. They’re plump, hearty, savory, and satisfying. Each of the hot dogs I’ve tried were placed inside buns that resembled slices of toast more so than a traditional hot dog bun. Think of nice, thick, buttered-up grilled cheese sandwich slices of toast instead of buns. That’s what they look like. Service is excellent. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and enthusiastic. They look like they’re happy to serve you. Brittni is a sweetheart. Fad or not, I think HD1 is a fun experience. Four stars.

HD1’s last wed trivia night(8⁄14) before they close for renovations after Sunday(8⁄18). I believe this location will become the 3rd fLip burger location in Atlanta after renovations. Overall, it wasn’t as crowded as I’d expected. I’ve always liked HD1 but I think the problem is that their menu hasn’t really changed since they opened. Don’t get me wrong… I love HD1’s hot dogs but I’d like to try new creations and not the same hot dogs over and over again. Raisin rum bread pudding was AMAZING. Love the mixed drinks here as well. Service was great. Plenty of parking in the lot across the street.

Went here last week with my family and was really impressed. Growing up my mom didn’t let us eat hotdogs because she was convinced that they were cylinder shaped dumpster, wrapped in a nitrate-laced casing. With that being said I was relieved that we could finally enjoy a hotdog meal without hearing a fire and brimstone lecture! I had the bruschetta dog which was amazing. It’s a beef hotdog topped with mozerella and bruschetta of course. It was tasty and so filling that I hardly had any room for the dr pepper baked beans. They were ok, but I wouldn’t order them again. I’m not really a fan of beans, but the lure of a soda-flavored vegetable drew me in. My mom got the garden chili dog. BEWARNED: the mayo used contains walnuts. My mom told our waitor to not use any mayo, as she is allergic to walnuts. When her plate got to the table she realized that it had mayo, so she had to send it back. The jury is still out on if they scraped off the mayo and returned the plate, because she left the restaurant with hives and an itchy throat. I’d come back again just for the lemonade. It was soooooo good! All in all great food but a little expensive for weekly visits.

For a good gourmet hot dog, HD-1 is the spot. it’s certainly my kid’s go-to restaurant when we are in Atlanta. They use New England style buns which are my favorite for hot dogs. A few of my personal faves are: 1. the Eastbound & Down –Carolina pulled pork & country slaw 2. South of Chi– topped with fried green tomato, sweet pickle, BBQ sauce & farm peppers 3. Merguez– spiced lamb sausage, currants, minted cucumber, labne yogurt Certainly try their waffle fries with maple-oy. The ultra-cool restaurant design make this dining experience a hip hang.

Are you serious with those HD fries… maple syrup… shut up and give me more! I don’t even like syrup. Those fries don’t make sense, but they don’t have to… they are just good. The dogs are good, I sampled a friends. I ordered the Irish banger(forgot the name) and was happy with every bite.

Walked in on a Friday night, music pumping, got pretty excited for some hot(haute) dogs. There was a sign that said«Find a seat and we’ll take care of you.» I walked over to a couple sitting, they said we were free to join the table. I was about to sit down when a waitress walked over and said, «Actually, there are 2 tables in front of you waiting so if you could please wait we’ll seat you shortly.» I looked at my friend really confused considering there’s a sign that said to be seated… Regardless, after about a 10 minute wait we sat down. The waitress was prompt in taking our orders and refilling our drinks. I had been to HD1 before, but this time decided on the Kenturkey and the Roasted Beets. I felt like we waiting longer than normal for some hot dogs and a salad. The beets came out first. Now, I love beets. But these, these were not good beets. Raw beets taste like dirt. The beets on this plate still had that dirt taste to them, like they were not cooked all the way before they were chilled. I was pretty disappointed, but the rest of the salad(arugula, goat cheese, onions) was simple and tasty(hard to mess that up). My hot dog was tasty too. The only complaint was that it was a bit cooler than I expected. The white sauce on top had chilled a bit when I bit into it. Other than that, I gobbled it right up. The service was good, the atmosphere is always pleasant. HD1 can get a little loud with the music playing and everyone talking, but it was fun listening in on other conversations in the family-style seating(although I think the group of guys next to us caught on that we were listening!). Things had definitely changed at HD1 in a year. You used to walk up to the counter and pay first before grabbing your drink and finding a seat. But, all in all, this is a pretty relaxed place to eat a couple hot dogs and have a few drinks, just don’t pay attention to any signs they put by the door.

I was in the area so I decided to visit this place since my friend said it was good! I ordered the frank with sweet relish, country slaw, ketchup and onion. I also got the honey waffle fries as side. The Bf got the red haute dog with BBQ beans and bacon bits. I personally like the sides more than the hotdogs. The fries was good but wasn’t crunchy enough(probably due to the honey or maple syrup). But my boyfriend enjoyed his BBQ beans. My hotdog tasted fine but it wasn’t spectacular. My boyfriend didn’t like his because it was too salty. Overall, I won’t come back unless I want those fries or BBQ beans again. :)

*whisper* this is a long overdue review… that I started back in June. Here’s what we had: carolina dog– solid, BBQ flavored dog with pulled pork. Good stuff. turkey sausage dog– There was a bit of a gamey/fleshy taste to the turkey sausage– wifey couldn’t take it. I ate the rest just because I’m a pig. smoked wings– no complaints, pretty tasty– plenty of smoke flavor throughout the wings. some type of pickled onion salad– This was a tad bit heavy on the vinegar taste, although it was refreshing. While the meal was decent, I think this place is really more of a novelty/celebrity joint that I probably wouldn’t frequent as a regular even if I lived close by. Every now and then… maybe.

I stopped by HD1 for an UYE last night, and can’t say that I was blown away. I think that most of the menu items leaned closer to gimmicky than innovative. There were definitely winners and losers on the menu. I tried the«south of chi-town» and«red haute» hot dogs. South of Chi-town was a southern take on the classic Chigago dog, but with fried green tomatoes and a sweet pickle. The tomatoes had a cornmeal batter, which gave this dog a strange mealy texture. I couldn’t get behind it. «Red haute» was up next. This was much more my speed. The brisket chili and pimento cheese are a game-winning combination. The bun was able to keep this all together surprisingly. It’s more of a crunchy griddled toast than a bun really, but worked well with the messy ingredients. The sides were the best, and I didn’t even order any. I just went with a group of Unilocalers who are nice enough to share. We had the pickles and boiled peanuts to start, which I would recommend wholeheartedly. The poutine was my favorite. I could easily kill a few orders of those perfectly crispy waffle fries drowned in brown gravy. How can you go wrong here? The waffle fries with syrup were also worth ordering if you are in the mood for a salty/sweet combo. It is also worth noting that they a huge selection of canned beer, which is a cool trend. Cans don’t have nearly as much exposure to air due to the empty space at the top and also don’t let light in. This combination helps protect the flavor of your beer. Overall, this place was ok. The décor is nice. I’m a sucker for dark wood and dim lighting. I also liked the communal seating which made it easy to bring a group. Parking is tight out front but they have an additional lot across the street. The wait staff was friendly enough, if not overly attentive. The prices did not seem high for the quality of the ingredients. 2 beers and 2 dogs ran me about $ 20. I could be talked into coming back.

I came here last night for a UYE hosted by The Empress, and unfortunately my brain thought it would be a good idea to wake up @ 715 instead of 615(the event starting at 730). Needless to say, I still would have been late if I were in Central Time. As I arrived, I saw the crew was getting their checks(nice one Tom). Another two things I noticed– the place was VERY dimly lit, and it also had the Bears V Packers on TV. Just two random observations. I saw Charlie B. drink a Lone Star tall boy, I decided to get one too, and browse the menu for something togo. I did notice out of the 5 times I have been there, some items come and go, and some I have seen everytime– so if you like/dislike an item, you may or may not see it the next time. In terms of sodas(which all drinks are can/bottle only), I noticed they did have a few new selections of natural cane sugar drinks– they looked good, but I stuck with the beer. I ended up getting a an HD1 classic, the Kenturkey dog(mornay, bacon, tomato, and something else). We sat at the table for a few, and the dog came out quickly. With that being said, I let all of the ingredients congeal. We decided to move the party elsewhere, I knew it was time to dom this thing– so as I got back to the car, I opened up the brown paper bag and went to town. Thankfully it was still warm, but the sauce wasn’t running so I wouldn’t look like I came out of a scene of a porno flick– so the fact it held together helped me eat it quicker, and not worry about spilling it. For something I was skeptical about not eating it freshouttathekitchen, that was a damn good dog. All in all, 10.80 $ for a gourmet dog and a tall boy, well for a Richard Blais place, I guess it’s not too bad. And I was with great company too– so I consider this just shy of 5 stars.

Until James H. pointed it out, I never knew HD1 stood for Hot Dog 1. Well, I’m not sure if that’s the official meaning, but it makes sense. It makes more sense than what I originally thought: High Definition 1. I thought it was some modern, «high definition» hotdogs with extra sharpness… in 3d. Well HD1 is a hot dog place. You can get plain hotdogs or their«haute dogs.» So I had to try one from both sections. From the plain hot dog section, I got the Plain Jane. It’s just a hotdog on a bun. I also got it because it was the cheapest dog on the menu. I chose ketchup and sweet relish for my dog. Yeah, I know most hot dog fanatics never put ketchup on a hotdog, but I did. However, I asked for San Marzano ketchup; so I didn’t commit a huge sin. Well, I’m not sure if they did give me San Marzano ketchup, their house ketchup, or just regular Heinz Ketchup; but I liked the plain Jane. The sweetness of the relish and ketchup provided a balance with the savoriness of the sausage. The dog had nice pop and was cooked well. I liked the Plain Jane a lot. It was simple and delicious. Also, they paid attention to every ingredient to the dog. They had great meat, great bun, and great condiments. I’m glad they didn’t slack off and got buns from Kroger or something. If they did, I would like to know what brand it was. From the Haute Dogs side, I got the Bratwurst. I didn’t like it as much because I ate it after the plain Jane. So all the juices from the caramelized onions made the bun soggy. I think if you get the Bratwurst, you should eat it first or you’ll get a soggy bun. The bratwurst itself tasted good. I tried a bite of their Chai Tea Latte ice cream. It tasted just like Chai Tea, and I liked it. At dinner, we talked about how I write about my bowel movements in my review. So I’ll do the same for this review. After I got home, I didn’t feel good and pooped a few times. I don’t know if it was the dogs, the ice cream, or what. It could’ve been from all the coffee I drank for lunch. So I’m not sure if the HD1 was the culprit. I will give HD1 the benefit of the doubt and say they weren’t the cause of my bathroom trips. So besides that, I liked HD1. I give it 3.75 stars.

I don’t think things like hot dogs and hamburgers need to be some overly fancy creation. My hat is off to those who have the personality that calls for creative forward thinking… but I am more of a traditionalist at heart. ESPECIALLY when it comes to staple foods like hot dogs. Being from Chicago originally, nothing is better to me than a Vienna brand dog with simple fresh toppings. I probably should have gone with the Chicago dog here, but instead I was convinced by our charming server to try the«most popular» dog… the Eastbound and Down(which comes with cole slaw, pulled pork BBQ and a sweet mustard). My favorite part was the bun. It was absolutely incredible. The dog itself was not bad, had good flavor, but the pulled pork was not very good and the texture was sort of grainy. That being said, we also ordered the Maple oy waffle fries and OMG did they pack a foodgasm punch. I’m the type of eater that likes to have a little bit of everything from my plate in my mouth simultaneously… and I promise you, ANYTHING would taste good mixed with these waffle fries. So it helped boost the flavor of my hot dog tremendously. My family liked, but didn’t love their meals. My oldest son complained about the hard snap of the skin when trying to eat his corn dog while my other son thought the chicken nuggets were«average». However, dipping them in the maple oy sauce made them taste much better. For dessert we ordered a coffee flavored ice cream the kids absolutely loved. Brittni brought each of them a spoonful in individual foam cups. My wife and I ordered the bread pudding and it was wonderful. Could have been a little sweeter, but still very, very good. The kids ate most of it although it was supposed to be OUR dish! — — — — — - — - THEVERDICT Overall it was a fantastic and unique experience after spending the day @ Six Flags. Mixed reviews between our entire crew puts our collective star rating @ 3.75. Without the kids input, it would have been less. I would definitely return, but I doubt if it would ever be part of my regular rotation due to cost. I can get a 10 pack of Nathan’s hot dogs and buns at Publix for around what I paid for my Eastbound n’ down :-) But those maple oy waffle fries make me a fan. NOTE: The entrance is confusing! It has two solid doors(neither is marked) in a dark vestibule at the entrance. As a parent, I couldn’t help but notice how the larger door seems particularly dangerous for smaller children. It opens in a way that leaves a huge gap for a child to easily get trapped in between… so parents please pay attention.

HD1 is one of those places I’d been meaning to stop by, well… forever. Since the precise moment I was capable of ingesting solid foodstuffs. I wanted to eat at HD1 before it even existed because, you know. Fancy hot dogs and canned craft beer at a Richard Blais concept restaurant. That’s something to be intrinsically desired. My wife and I winged on by on the way home from the airport this morning. We were quite literally waiting at the(massive wooden) door when the employees unlocked it at 11:30. I think we may have frightened them as we rushed inside while slobbering uncontrollably at the prospect of meat in tube form. The restaurant itself is clean and modern. I dig the«communal seating» vibe with the long tables and benches, although if the place had been packed full of people that would have been much less appealing. The wood paneling accents are funky fresh and fly, man. Far out. There’s a large chalkboard-style menu on the wall immediately facing the door outlining the available dogs and sides. A smaller beer menu hangs to the right behind the bar and highlights an impressive selection of canned craft brews. And PBR, natch. You decide what you want and approach a counter to order and take a number, and then you pay up-front and seat yourself. I ordered The Dublin, an Irish banger with beer/cheddar mustard sauce and bacon braised cabbage. Naturally I paired it with a hearty milk stout in a can, and also some of the special house waffle fries. These fries are insane, y’all. They come drenched in something called«maple-oy sauce» and I don’t know what that means, but it’s like eating a salty potato-y short stack.(That’s better than I just made it sound, pinky swear.) The haute dog itself was quite tasty. The banger was well cooked and had exactly the snap you want when you bite into an Irish sausage. I expected that the bacon braised cabbage would take center stage but I couldn’t have been more wrong; the mustard sauce was the clear star of the show. It had a delicious tang that really complimented the spice of the sausage and the smokiness of the cabbage/bacon. I didn’t really taste cheddar or beer in the sauce but that’s less a complaint than an observation. It was delicious. My only two complaints focused on the sheer height of the sandwich and the bread. I’ve never eaten a hot dog quite this tall and it was physically impossible to get all of the flavors in a single bite. I resorted to taking small consecutive nibbles from the top, sides and bottom so that I could experience all of those yummy ingredients mingling as intended. The bread was very thick, toasted, and looked almost like a small loaf. I understand that a substantial bun is probably required to house the mondo ingredients being thrown down by these guys, but to me it was a distraction rather than an enhancement. I wish it hadn’t been toasted because I like a nice soft, pliable bun. This place rocks and I want to come back soon and order extensively from the canned beer menu. There’s no doubt that Blais is a nitrate meat wizard, and I salute him for a unique and stylish concept at HD1.

It’s not your typical hot dog place, that’s for sure. They’ve got a lot to choose from. Too many for this plain old Joe to choose from. But life is about choices so I chose the«Merguez». Pretty damn good choice. It got the job done for me while preserving it’s hot dog integrity. I’m sure there are better choices then the Merguez but I’ll save those for future visits to Hotlanta. Aside from hot dogs/brats this place serves up some freaking awesome desserts like their soft served Bananas Foster. Worth every melting bite!!! The HD1 Fries were OK for me… it was different, I’ll give Blais that. Major props to the beverage selections at HD1 though… you can’t go wrong no matter how you choose. The cream sodas on a hot day sure do hit the spot though. Hot Damn! Haute Doggery! Hotlanta…

I’m in love with these dogs — and their buns, too(which look like folded over toast). You can take away the fancy toppings and you’ll still have a delicious hot dog. Honestly for my first visit, I was overwhelmed at the # of different options — not just the different topping options but also the dog itself(beef & pork, turkey sausage, veggie frank, or carrot dog). This review covers two visits. SOUTHOFCHI-TOWN — $ 5.50 Served w/chow-chow, fried green tomato, sweet pickle, BBQ, and farm peppers. I got this dog for my first visit and the toppings were too much for me – the best part was the beef & pork dog, and the bun. I decided next time I’d get something with less toppings. REDHAUTE — $ 5.50 Served w/brisket chili, pimento jack, and sweet onion. Ordered this for my 2nd visit but again … best part was really the dog and the bun. CLASSIC — $ 4 Served w/sauerkraut and HD mustard. Sampled just the sauerkraut and it had the perfect sourness to it. My mom loved her Classic dog. PLAINJANE — $ 4.25 Served w/HD mustard, ketchup, sweet relish, and onions. Sampled just the sweet relish and it tasted like homemade chopped bread & butter pickles — so much better than the jar kind! Dad enjoyed his Plain Jane dog too — which is a win b/c my dad is a picky eater. HDWAFFLEFRIES — $ 4 Yes the waffle fries alone are yum but drizzled with their maple-oy sauce … SWEET! Parents loved the fries. PORK N’ BEANS — $ 4.25 Dr. Pepper reduction and topped w/bacon crumbles. The flavor was awesome. B&B BEETSALAD — $ 5.50 Served w/spicy walnuts, apple, arugula, and goat cheese purée. The salad was more like an entrée size than side salad. Loved everything in it – and the beets were the big orange kind. Definitely coming back again, and again. So many selections to try. Next time I’d like to get the Cubanita, Eastbound & Down, bratwurst, veggie frank, and Nutella bread pudding. By the way, the servers are very nice. FYI — they have lunch combos Mon-Fri until 3pm. Just $ 2.75 more to add a can of soda and waffle fries.

Poutine. Say it with me: poutine. No, not the French way. Say it with some gentle Southern charm. Now slowly. See that funny shape your mouth makes around this funny little word? Now imagine a startlingly cute waitress(reminiscent of Betty Boop) saying this word to you in an effort to describe how good it is. Poutine. Kinda gave me that awkward gym-class feeling. I had to order it just on the cute factor alone. And I’m glad I did. Whole Pig Poutine: a big pile of waffle-cut fries topped with pork, gravy, fontina cheese, and some herbs. Addictively good, never mind the waitress. I will go back just for the poutine. My friend ordered some chips with a chili-lime sauce. Forgive me, I’ve forgotten the name of this item, and it doesn’t appear to be on the menu. But that chili-lime sauce was outstanding. The weird thing is, I somehow remember these sides more than I remember my dogs. And the dogs were great! I had a Red Haute(a standard wiener topped with brisket chili, pimento jack, and sweet onion), and an Eastbound and Down(topped with Carolina pulled pork, sweet mustard slaw, and something called«mop sauce»). Fantastic. Knowing of Richard Blais’ ability to take a potentially gimmicky food-feature and turn it into a restaurant standard, I was expecting… Well, I was expecting gimmicks.(Like putting liquid nitrogen on a milkshake.) But if a gimmick works, is it really a bad thing? I don’t see anything wrong with getting creative with a big plate of tube-steak. And yes, you can quote me.

Not at all what I expected, but everything I wanted it to be. HD1 is the kind of place I want to go out to with friends when we can’t really decide on dinner and we mostly want to drink and chat over some munchies. Delicious munchies. The interior is simple and classy. The menu board — which I’ve heard will change regularly — is written on an erasable glass at the front, and sections are titled«bits» and«stuff.»(It makes sense, trust me.) I split a few things with friends — the chicken apple sausage and the fennel sausage. The fennel was my favorite, just all around delicious, classy, and way better than your average dog. I liked the chicken apple sausage even though I’m not a huge fan of sweet/savory(the grapes on top were not a win with me, but others might go for it). The herbed crema on it was unique and memorable. Also surprisingly memorable? The soft-serve. I had vanilla with charcoal dust and sea salt. I was afraid of the charcoal dust at first but it did give the ice cream a nice, different, touch of savory flavor. I only hope they offer more flavors in the future… I heard rumor of a bourbon burnt sugar? And I can’t believe no one has mentioned prices! This place is incredibly cheap for what is being offered. I know plenty of places where I can’t get an ice cream for less than $ 4, and here I had ice cream from a top chef for about $ 2. All of the dogs and sides are beyond resonable as well.
