High Museum of Art

Atlanta’s museum is a place I go to see temporary exhibits, not so much the permanent collection, so keep that in mind if you are visiting. The permanent collection should be much better than it is. So, let me break this down.
Museum Design: it’s a modern museum design, very minimalistic. It’s perhaps a matter of opinion, but the building is very plain and there is not much going for it. One of the less interesting museums architecturally that I’ve visited around the globe.
Friday Night Jazz: if I am not mistaken, it’s on the third Friday of every month and is a great event if you have an opportunity to attend. If you want wine or beer, do be prepared to wait in a long line and pay a lot. They did stock the bar rather well, from beers last time there was Beck’s and Pilsner Urquell on the menu. From wines, there is a low end option (14 hands) and for $ 5 more you can get a better wine such as Paul Hobbs. I do wish that they poured into glass as opposed to plastic. However, for the admission price of $ 10 a person, it’s hard to attend and makes for a great date night without spending a lot.
Temporary exhibits: from Picasso to Exotic Cars to Habsburg collection, Atlanta museum gets so phenomenal expositions.
Permanent collection: for a city the size of Atlanta, this is a rather disappointing collection. Even smaller cities such as Birmingham, AL have better permanent collections. Just my opinion. Not sure if it’s a lack of funding or another issue, but personally, I wouldn’t come to visit the museum for permanent collection that’s here if you have limited time in Atlanta.

The last time I visited The High Museum was probably during a field trip for school or camp. Back then I didn’t care nor appreciate the beauty that it possesses.
Located directly across from the Arts Center MARTA Station, the museum is easily accessible for those not wanting to deal with traffic or parking. The walkway to the entrance has several chairs and tables to lounge. Upon entering the main lobby you’ll notice the ticket line, if not there are several helpful volunteers and staff to assist you. After you purchase your ticket be sure to grab a map, check your coat at the coat check, and use the restroom.
There are several floors to navigate so I suggest planning to stay for a few hours. On my most recent trip, I enjoyed exhibits such as African Art, American Encounters, and Brett Weston just to name a few. The exhibits possessed so many different pieces and beautiful works of art. I also noticed there was a floor geared more towards children which included activities.
The High is perfect for couples, families, groups of friends, and even those enjoying the single lifestyle. Whether you’re well versed in art our just looking for something new to experience, I highly recommend planning a visit. Be sure to stop by the gift shop or get a little nibble at the coffee shop in the lobby before leaving. I can’t wait too check out the Basquiat Exhibit next month!

Ticket lines completely unorganized. Don’t buy your tickets online because you still have to get in line at the museum to exchange your printout and that line is longer than the normal ticket line. Dual Membership is same price as Family Membership??? Why should 2 people pay the same price as 3,4,5,6…The latest special exhibit is ho-​hum but not a bad way to spend a rainy day.

I absolutely love this museum. I love the offerings that they create for children, for family involvement, community and just all groups of art lovers. The facility is beautiful. When, I visit I never want to leave.

I love the fabulous additions to the high Museum of art! The last time I was here was in 1994 and although I really enjoyed it then, it makes me very happy to see that the high Museum has expanded.
The lighting was really nice, the parking was ample though very pricey at $ 12 a car (toll-​free if you have a military ID card or are a dependent)
And the elevator from the parking garage takes you to the entrance of the museum. I highly suggest getting a map because it is easy to miss some of the galleries if you just wonder around.
In the rotunda of the main museum, there are six tables set up for kids to do art and there was a night in full armor walking around for photo opportunities. It was very family-​friendly and it definitely would be fun for kids to come and do some art.
My only suggestion would be that the titles and authors of the various works were written in very small print on the side of the pieces and it was very hard to read in the low light. I suggest making the lettering a bit larger so that it wasn’t such a struggle to read.

Great place to visit and a great learning experience! The museum is really large and there’s something that would satisfy all art tastes, from the early renaissance era to the more modern day pop art style, any art and even non-​art connoisseur can enjoy a day at the High. It’s also a great place for children, there’s an art gallery for children located at the bottom level of the museum. The monthly exhibits are always great so check out whats the current exhibit when you’re plan on visiting because it could be your favorite artist! There are live music shows on some Friday evenings which is great to experience but always check the website calendar to see what’s the news for the day you plan on visiting. The entry tickets are a little pricey, however there are times where the amount may be a less and if you have a friend that’s a member, you can obtain a ticket at a discounted price also! The High Museum is a great place to visit if you’re ever in Atlanta. Give it a go!

I come here at least once a year, more depending on the exhibits. A few years ago I went to the Dali exhibit TWICE. Great gift shop, but just excellently curated. And it’s free for Fulton County residents every Second Saturday, and free for Bank of America customers on the first full weekend of every month.

Damn, I feel like such a scrooge with this 3 stars rating. Okay, lemme explain why. First of it all, I’ve been living in Atlanta for about three decades. Three, that’s right, doesn’t make it a three stars rating and this is my FIRST time going. The reason is that I went when it was Museum Day and I chose High Museum of Art to visit. It’s free. I mean, I really wouldn’t pay to go. It cost too much… also not to mention the parking! And the hours of operations! My daughter loves art so she was excited to go check it out.
The High was bigger than I thought, with many levels. However, the art display wasn’t what I expected, more like we, my daughter and I, expected. She was highly disappointed, she didn’t wanted to see more arts like paintings than furniture. She didn’t care for the statues, I didn’t mind too much. We did like the modern arts section but the displays were more limited.
I am glad I got to experience it but was very underwhelmed.

I was able to visit the museum for free thanks to the free tickets from Smithsonian Mag. This museum is right off the MARTA Arts center station, which is really nice if you don’t want to pay for the 12 dollar parking. The building here is beautiful and there are some really cool art/​displays on the outside of the museum. Even on a free admission day, this place wasn’t packed and rowdy as I was expecting.
I liked how this place is not super big so you can see everything and not be completely exhausted or bored. I also like that it was a mixture of older art work plus some more contemporary art work — especially the cool furniture! This place helps with stimulating the creative minds… Had a great time here!

High museum of art was interesting the 3^rd floor I enjoyed the best. The 2^nd and 1^st floor was not anything special. Enjoyed the lower level which consisted of local students in Atlanta some of the art was amazing and the age of the artist made it even more amazing. Overall great experience

I don’t know much about the art scene here in Atlanta, but what I have seen of it is pretty impressive. I didn’t think much of Atlanta before I visited and that may have been part of my problem. This is a city seated deep in culture of the South with influence from around the world creating a melting pot of neat experiences for everyone who visit. I was in the middle of exploring the town and stumbled upon this place… the High Museum of Art.
From the outside it appeared to be primarily modern art. As you probably experienced yourself in other experiences that modern art doesn’t always seem to make a lot of sense. I was concerned initially because I’m one of those people who don’t understand modern art. Did I really come all the way here for nothing? Did I just pay for something I would yawn at? As I marched through I realized that wasn’t the case. There was a fair amount of classic art as well that is dispersed between 3 buildings. Yes, modern art actually did comprise a majority of the museum but it was a good mix of the two.
Come during the week day as it’s quite quiet during that time. It also seems like a great place for people to host conferences or gatherings. There’s a lot of open space! Parking garage is situated next door to the museum.

So, I visited this establishment for Toddler Thursday. For a museum, I must say they have a few ways to keep toddlers engaged without feeling like their screams disturb the building. From arts and crafts to Storytime, exhibits etc. Kids 6 & under are free which is also a great treat. Bring a lunch or snack bc the café just has a few sandwiches and fruit cups, granola bars, and juice. The staff is exceptionally polite, helpful and friendly. I was probably the most impressed with them. Parking is a bit pricey at $ 10 coupled with $ 16.95 admission. If you’re not a museum person (in my case) it may not be worth it. On the premises they had other buildings dedicated to the Arts so if that’s something you enjoy then this is definitely a great place to spend the day.

We went for 2^nd Sunday Family Fun day. It was great. Every second Sunday, the museum is free to the public. ON this Sunday, they had kid friendly events set up too.
I am always scared to bring my kids to the museum because they would say stuff like «I see that man’s penis» when looking at a statue. Sure enough – my 4 year old pointed and said it out loud. Luckily, it made the olders around giggle. My 6 year old wanted to know why they would have chairs on display that you could not sit it. One day she will understand.
My kids got to make some funky art thing as well as listen to a story and make a piñata, which was the highlight… and better once we filled it with candy at home.
Outside of the museum they have these colorful seats that are on a rotator that you can spin. My kids loved them.
They had someone selling drinks and snacks outside, but it was very very limited. Oh course they advertised ice cream bars, but only had chocolate fudge bars. Chocolate Fudge Bars + kids= #FAIL
Overall, we had a fun time.

I love it here! This is a great art museum in Atlanta. You can easily spend 2 – 3 hours here, and if you need some down just stroll around. I saw the Mo Willems exhibit and loved it! But their permanent collection was expansive and lovely too.
PS– if you have a Bank of America card you’ll get free admission on the first weekend of the month. Holler!

The High Museum is one of Atlanta’s gems, bringing world class art to the South. In addition to blockbuster exhibits, there’s a variety of smaller shows that appeals to a wide range of interests. I’m expeciallly drawn to the many photography exhibits throughout the year.
A creative marketing team has worked hard to develop events that bring in a diverse crowd. My favorite is Friday night music which brings live music to the atrium every third Friday. There’s lots of energy from a crowd that comes as much for the fun as to view art. Not only is the museum open late but admission is half off after 5pm. And before becoming a member, we’d visit on the first Saturday of the month, which is free for Fulton Co. residents.
And speaking of memberships, it’s well worth the money. If you see a special membership deal (i.e., Groupon), by all means grab it. We especially love the member only previews of new exhibits. It’s a godsend for blockbuster exhibits when crowds can get uncomfortably dense. Other benefits include a member newsletter and an express membership admission line, plus a discount on audio tours. Best of all, your membership covers everything — you don’t pay surcharges for special exhibits.
The High has delivered programming that has brought us to the museum over and over again. Having a membership has cemented the relationship.

What a great little museum! The outdoor swivel tents are a nice way to begin the museum tour. Inside, the permanent displays show a little bit of everything European, American, Furniture, Jewelry, special exhibits, etc. I especially enjoyed the sculptures, more than I thought I would.
Overall, took about 2 hours, just glancing at most of the exhibits and taking time to study the ones I really liked.
Parking is $ 10. Since I am military (spouse), got in for free. Half off admission on Friday nights!

I’ve had a membership for the High Museum since I moved here 6 years ago. They offer many activities for the family, kids, and for grown-​ups. My main motivation for getting a membership was the Jazz night they offer every third Friday night. Jazz night has a different live band every month and you also can look at the art and visit the most recent exhibition the museum has. Check out their monthly calender to see what fun stuff they have going on each month. Hands down the high is one of the best museums in Atlanta.

Great museum! Came on a Tuesday, which is free of cost! Didn’t have much time, so I had to narrow my visit down to only two exhibitions. Saw a great one on Coke and the history of their bottle marketing, which included some works by Andy Worhol that was never used in Coke’s marketing.
Also saw a great photograph exhibition Leonard Freed. He captured some fabulous mid-​century moments of the African American life in the south.
There’s a nice restaurant located in the courtyard area and a small café inside the main building, drinks, sandwich’s and coffee type of items mostly. Coat and bag check was free too.
So if you’re a museum goer then you know that «free day» is nice because it’s free right?! The only possible draw back is you might get some large school groups competing for exhibition space like we did today, still the kids were well behaved and we had a great time at this fantastic museum!

With my daughter being an art major in college I decided to check out this museum. Tourist flyers are available that will save you $ 3.00 off admission which was perk for us.
The museum has 4 levels to it and also a skyway level that will connect you with some other wings including special exhibitions. I wanted to see Gordon Park’s exhibition on the Segregation story along with the 100 anniversary of the Coca cola bottle. Both exhibits were very informative and well done. I was really amazed to see the original Coca cola design bottle on display.
There was a third exhibition we visited called «Imagining new worlds». While touring it we ran into Fahamu Pecou himself who was giving a tour of his work.
We did visit some of the permanent collection as well and saw art work never seen before.
The museum is open late on Fridays which happened to be the day of our visit. You are given in and out privileges as long as you wear your admission sticker for the day. They have a very nice gift shop, a café where you can grab a bite to eat, and a lovely terrace with fruit sculptures.
The museum is centrally located in midtown although if you take the Marta you do have to climb up a bit of a hill to get there. Still if you are a lover of art it is well worth the visit.

May want to purchase tickets ahead of time to avoid standing in long lines.
Good value for all the different interesting exhibits. Worth it for you and your guests to each get the audio guide.
There are short guided tours of the museum on certain days.
There are couches throughout to rest your legs.
Pay for parking unless you snag good street parking (free on Sundays).
